Was this against Brisbane in 94?

Aden Yze goal off the ground in the 2000 qualifying final to put us in front after a great last quarter come back that took us through to the 2000 GF, via North in the Prelim...

There was about 3 all from nearly the same spot in the 2002 Final v Adelaide. Second quarter in the left forward pocket. Trav and maybe Yze and Vardy?

Always remember Stephen Powell kicking one just before half time in the 2000 Prelim that basically guaranteed we were in the GF the next week.

Jeff White in 2005 v Bulldogs also stands out and Robbo the next week against the Bummers.

David Neitz 600th goal, becoming the first ever Demon to kick 600.

Cant believe it isnt on Youtube.

My favourite was in the elimination final v Essendon (I think 2005).

Whelan absolutely flattened Hird and then the ball ended up with Travis Johnstone who slotted it from 50 on the boundary.

The crowd went berzerk.

Neitz ending McCabe. Neitz from 70 members side.

Yze from the right pocket v Freo. Technically 100/100 difficulty.

Jurrah lying on the ground kicking over his head.

Farmer ripping apart the length of Waverley.

Jakovich... any.

Schwarz from 50 on the boundary in Sydney. Schwarz showing the crowd the ball v Carlton. Schwarz to Chelli v Adelaide.

Petracca's 2nd.

Davey out of the air from 40. Davey double baulk.

Still Woewodin.

Vardy v Freo in the rain.

Trapper in the Adelaide final and in the granny.

Any Jeff Garlett out the back v Collingwood.

Oliver.

I think Neita's 600th was in the Semi in 2006 against Freo.

Froggy's surely must be THE one, snatching our last flag against the great enemy in most unexpected circumstances.

That's my favourite goal and favourite moment at the footy. We were struggling in that first quarter and the Whelan absolutely flattened Hird,Travis get on the end of the chain and nails a running goal from 50 on the boundary. Crowd went berserk and it ignited us. Probably the most exciting game I've ever been to live, still gutted we lost that after some sh*t umpiring calls gave the Dons a win in a tight one. There was such excitement with the team back then. Davey debuting and completely changing the game with forward pressure. Some of our best players of the past few decades all running around together in Neitz, Travis, Yze, Bruce etc. Guys like Whelan and Doggie Brown owning the backing and rebounding brilliantly.

This is the play that still gets me pumped.

Really the first time I heard the Melbourne crowd start chanting along with the cheer squad. The noise was brilliant. The rest was glorious history.

I've been a Demons fan for 40 years, and the first goal that comes to my mind with the OP was a flash of Sean Wight #27 magic.  He was playing one-out as full forward in the goal square and was starting to lead toward the flank with his opponent pressing hard.  The incoming ball from the 50m line on a 45 degreee angle was too strong and looking like it was going to bounce at the top of the goal square and skid through for a behind.  Sean had other ideas: he doubled back, still with his opponent pressing hard, watched the ball coming over his shoulder and then VOLLEYED the ball through for a goal!  Magic.  I've seen soccer players do this sort of thing on very rare occasions but this this was the one and only time I've seen an AFL (VFL then) player do it with a 50m kick.  It was magic.

One travesty is that the game wasn't televised (there was once such a time when only some of the games were televised) so there is, as far as I know, no video footage.  When Sean passed away, I saw one other Demonlander recount this story, so I know I wasn't dreaming.

The OP got me thinking about how some skills that we marveled in the 1980's are now quite common.  Peter Daicos was marveled for his dribbling kicks that rolled in an arc through for a goal, and Pies fans cheered like he was Jesus on a donkey and the rest of us gritted our teeth and silently thought that it was pretty good.  These days, we see one of those goals almost every week.  Similar story with the snap kick that Stevie J pioneered is almost the kick of choice of some players, and that boomerang kick that it replaced has just about gone the same way as the drop kick - thank heaven for Clarrie's on the Adelaide Oval boundary to keep it alive.

Jacker's bicycle kick that others mentioned was also pretty special.  Gazza's 70m bomb at Waverley to get us the win against Carlton was great.  Nietz's bump on McCabe was great and Schwartz's goal in the final against Carlton after snatching the ball from a forward flank through in was a special feeling.

One slightly more obscure goal was kicked by Flash against David Wirrapunda from West Coast at the MCG in about round 10 in 2004 (if my memory serves me correctly).  It was great because it was a set play that started with a throw in on the back flank.  I didn't realise what was happening at the time, but the Melbourne forwards subtlety moved toward the wing and left the centre square almost vacant, where Flash walked with David Wirrapunda.  With Jeff White in the ruck, we won the knock-out from the throw in, the ball was hand passed to a Melbourne midfielder streaming into the centre square just as Flash did a u-turn and started to spring back toward the vacant 50m arc.  The midfielder kicked the ball over Flash's head so that he could easily run onto it and into a vacant goal square - nice.  Once again, we've seen Jeffy do this a few times in the past few years but this was the first time I saw it, and I'm sure that it was a set play specifically to set up a goal when there was a throw-in on the back flank.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
