Brisbane Lions Consider Asking for Priority Picks

Season isn't even farken over and they are having a sook. Even under the old regime they wouldn't get one.

Go eat a dick Brisbane. If we win no more games ourselves we would still deserve one more then them.

They reminded me a bit of Fitzroy on the weekend . . .

And we're about to break FItzroy's losing record over the last decade.

Brisbane were amongst the loudest in opposition to us getting a pick, and now they're going to ask for one because the talent on their list 'looks skinny'?

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Exactly. This is what pisses me off the most. I'd be fine with clubs who didn't oppose us getting PPs applying, but what hypocrisy otherwise. Particularly, when they opposed it last [censored] year.

Posted

I hope Jackson and co. say nothing. Even if they get one (which they won't, but they'd be derelict in duty not to apply). If we're going to have a persecution complex we should earn it.

I wonder if this is really about them losing future picks in matching the inevitable bids that come for Keays and Hipwood. Both first rd quality. Fair chance they get unders for Aish too.

Almost undoubtedly a ploy to get their Academy players for peanuts AND still be allowed to draft regular players like any other year.

I'm pretty sure they would have.

Don't you know how the AFL work they will get a pp maybe not first round but maybe a extra second round pick, the AFL have not done anything fair when it comes to pp and salary cap

By their own admission, the Lions haven't fielded their best side this year, they recently cleared a number of their best young players elsewhere and only kicked four goals against us on Sunday. The AFL should charge them with tanking bringing the game into disrepute.

You started a PP thread on here on 20 May.

Look at our last 8 seasons compared to theirs and you might see why....

The sole reason Brisbane don't have any high draft picks on their list is because they traded them all away for experienced players. Beams is a great player, but overall their recruiting over the past 6 years makes Barry Prendergast seem like a genius in comparison.

I don't blame them for asking the question, but there is zero justification for it at this point.

Posted

Didn't they nearly make finals a couple of years ago about the time they sacked their coach?

I'd always thought Voss was hard done by, he was a good coach in my eyes.

If it's a "case by case" scenario as the AFL suggests, they could very well get one. Their list is horrid, in a worse place than ours was in 2012 and 2013. They have very little young talent and they'll lose Aish and their best ruckman. Christensen and Beams are going through the motions and collecting a paycheck. I wouldn't be surprised if they get it, especially if they lose good players this pre-season (which they will).

They could very well go without a win next season.

If they get a priority pick I fully expect a please explain from us

It is a downright disgrace that they even have the nerve to ask for it!

In no way is their current list worse than ours was in 2012/2013.

They'll get it.

I doubt it, but if they do, rest assured that keyboards will be melting around the Demonland fraternity.

No justification but we all know the inherent bias in AFL decision making as far as interstate teams and also Melbourne based teams seen as important to the AFL market place. The AFL is like a benevolent old grandfather selectively dishing out money to his favourite nephew. It has never been a level playing field and it never will be. It is not about fairness it is all about but whats good for the business/market.

Good luck to them - no chance.

And that midfield is "underperforming."

In our case it "didn't exist"...

If you don't get a PP based on the lack of corporeal beings I really don't think you will get one when you have those corporeal beings and they are not playing well...

Let 'em redraft Ted Fidge.

It was John who played for the Bears not Ted.

I'll always remember Ted's last game for Melbourne in 88. 'Pants' Millane deliberately trod on Teddy's hand and Teddy went whack and KO'd him and we ran away with the game. Millane stayed on the bench for the rest of the game seeing stars. Cost Ted 6 weeks, but was beautiful to watch

While Brisbane would be incredibly hypocritical to ask for a priority pick, I have some sympathy with the Lions given they have lost so many players due to homesickness. Moreover, the gap in quality between the best sides and the worst sides in the AFL is still huge and I feel the fairest way to bridge the difference is via the draft and salary cap. (This gap needs to narrow IMO, because I am sick of watching so many uneven games of footy.) But the decision by the AFL that priority picks now be handed out by the commission arbitrarily leads to activism against the pick being given by the other 17 clubs. Brisbane, indeed, were a key complainant against Melbourne getting a priority pick in 2013 when Voss was in charge. Greg Swann also lobbied hard against Melbourne being overcompensated for Frawley leaving last year. It is therefore impossible for Melbourne supporters to feel Brisbane deserve a priority pick when we didn’t get one, especially given our performances were much, much worse and because Brisbane look to be playing well below their capability this year.

Personally, I feel the AFL needs to consider revising the draft order so that all the sides outside the finals have two picks prior to the top 8. This would be essentially a priority pick for every team that misses the finals and would take away the annual debate which is bad for football.

At the end of 2013 they lost 5 players wanting to 'go home', including at least 2, 1st round draft picks. Mostly they got crap picks back from the home state clubs eg Docherty (Blues), Polac (Port), Yeo (Eagles)...have forgotten the others. I reckon they will base their case on this mass exodus (which was caused by their crap development and crap player welfare management).

Their position is no different to us losing high draft picks (Cook, Blease, Morton, Gysbert etc) because of our crap development and crap player welfare management. Other similarities are AFL sent Swann in (Jackson for us), put money into the club (debt for them, Roos for us), supported a Board revamp.

However, the AFL need Lions/Queensland to be 'successful' more than they need us to be. The similarities between the current Lions situation and ours will be conveniently forgotten. I reckon, they will get draft assistance...while its hard to see a contract for Leunberger being big enough for a high1st round compo pick, I can see the AFL using their 'discretion' to make it so.

And no will give a damn what Melbourne supporters think!!

I remember John spent one or two seasons for Melbourne and played a few games with brother Ted. He had injury problems at the Dees. Always remember thinking that Ted was the better player but for some reason never fulfilled his potential.

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
