Jobe opened his mouth without thinking now his been told to shut up. The AFL is in a pickle they dont want to take points of Essendon and dont want to suspend their players during the season. The AFL is probably praying Jobe does not poll well in this years brownlow. End of the year just after Essendon leaves the finals the results will be released, 6-8 players guilty, 18 months sentence with 12 months suspended, the remaining 6 months suspension starts immediately. All in all a couple of essendon players dont play the first couple of rounds that might just mean they play GWS, GCS and MFC in those rounds. players come back for the rest of the year all forgiven, club fined $200,000 for unintentional/reckless action with low impact. Drugs like tanking will then no longer exist.

My understanding is the players had major misgivings and insisted on a consent form that included a guarantee that the supplements were permitted.

The AFL have some very deep soul searching to do - sounds maybe melodramatic, but the future of the game, or at least the AFL competition as a serious code is at stake here.

I agree with this. If they arent punished severely it opens the door for everyone to do whatever they like. Itll turn into even more of an arms race and ill have no faith in the comp anymore.

So where does this go?

The players can never be clear under the prevailing rules once they ingest a banned substance unless they do so without giving their consent such as when the player is unconscious at the time (the only example to date of an athlete beating the rap). Fraud might be another defence but that's probably drawing a long bow.

Watson should not play this weekend. The reasons for suspending him pending the outcome of a final hearing into the charges are more compelling than in the Milne case.

Apparently no charges or findings will be released until August. I think that on the back of an admission like this, Watson has to be suspended indefinitely and stripped of his Brownlow. I suspect, however, that he will be allowed to play on and will win his second Brownlow in as many years.

This is now getting very ugly. I can understand why the AFL are saying nothing at the moment, it's to a fair degree out of their hands. They are in a difficult position and the game is in a very difficult position and as someone who loves the game I would hope the AFL don't take knee jerk reactions. If Jobe gets served his notice from ASADA then I think the AFL will have no choice but to stand him down but until that time what is the best thing.

There are going to be some serious ramifications come out of all this but I can't help but feel unease about the long term relationships that will break down. People with lifetime friendships forged from football will be at odds and when the blame game starts things will get very messy.

footy clubs are made up of president committee coaches and players

the so called scientific people are a side line and make suggestions to the coach about injury recovery and training ideas, its then up to the coaching panel to sort out which idea they use ITS THIER CHOICE

now as for the players, what galah would allow HIMSELF to be injected up to 50 times in the abdomen and think its normal and not ask questions.

we teach our children to be aware of leaving drinks unattended at nightclubs, don't get in cars with drivers who have been drinking, etc etc

I think this is a far more complex issue than is being reported. The Australian Crime Commission website says that the AOD-9604 is "not currently prohibited" by WADA, and then also says it's not approved for human use. As a minimum, I think there is sufficient confusion that players who were injected or used AOD could claim a misunderstanding.
