Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

NAB CUP 2: PORT ADELAIDE

Presuming we plan for hot weather here is the 24 who (judging from the comments in the article about rested players and injuries) are in the squad. Seems like Sylvia was the unlucky guy as to me he is the only clear best 22 player in this squad. Obviously some of these guys will end up in round 1 team.

FB: Strauss Gillies Jetta

HB: Nicholson Sellar Macdonald

C: Evans Magner Stark

HF: Sylvia Hogan Tapscott

FF: Davey Pedersen Fitzpatrick

Foll: Spencer Couch M. Jones

Int; Taggert, Barry, Davis, Terlich, Kent, Tynan

Rested: Jack Grimes, Nathan Jones, Chris Dawes, Tom McDonald, Jack Watts, Jordie McKenzie, Jeremy Howe, David Rodan, Mark Jamar, Colin Garland, Shannon Byrnes, Lynden Dunn, Jimmy Toumpas and Jack Viney

INJ: Frawley, Blease, Trengove, Clark, Gawn, Bail, Clisby

Its pretty obvious that those rested who are not injured are locked for round 1. The others are in development or playing for the remaining spots.

Ho....hum

How long until round 1?

Seems a bit of a pointless exercise but at least many of our prized assets are being protected from the country oval.

Love all you "experts" knowing what's best for our players. Why would you be happy if a player is rested? Aren't players meant to love footy and want to play? Who says resting in the pre season makes a player play better in the home and away season? I think playing could actually be beneficial for a lot of players. Stop being so brainwashed by the media. Get your own mind. Of course this game means something, otherwise it wouldn't be played. We've got to play some players, who are all at serious risk of injury! OH NO! In fact, why do we play any players any week? Let's end footy because of injury risk. Please go back to before you were hit by media ideology, when you thought players were heroes who get hit hard but you didn't act like a parent.

P.S I'm going to the game so I hope to see a win

Actually sounds like you are the one who's not thinking clearly and are thinking through your pocket. What kind of theory is the game means something otherwise it wouldn't be played. After 2 losses in nab 1 we can't win the cup so it means very little. Even Port have named a pretty lowly side.

The injury risk and the fatigue risk is low you are correct, but why take any risk at all. I want everything the club to do everything they can to win as many games as they can during the season.

This game does mean something. It means a chance for some of our lessor players to wear the guernsey with pride and to put themselves up for round 1 selection. I hope that's what you go to see and I hope our players can deliver that.

Troy Davis also gets a run!

They keep promising that! The MFC website doesn't seem to have changed its comments much since last year if I am not wrong:

Davis could push to become a regular in the Melbourne defence this year. A thyroid disorder cost Davis the first half of last season, but when he played in the VFL, his form was impressive. The 192cm Davis can play on talls and smalls and is a solid mark. Melbourne is happy with his progress.

Was hoping taggers was higher in the pecking order by now after a full pre season

I can't believe how many are complaining over this line up.

What better way to get AFL experience into the younger players. Wouldn't you rather our best 22 keeping fit and injury free for Round 1 and actually getting some game experience into the inexperienced players.

I would be far more pi$$ed off if one of our better players got injured due to the crappy surface at Renmark or some other inexperienced player laying a injury prone tackle than to a lose a NAB cup game.

You complain about the Demons never winning and when we try to protect some players to be fit for Round 1 you all complain again.

We lost both first games so who gives a crap for round 2.

I actually hope we lose every single NAB cup game, so we can hit Round 1 hard string some wins together and actually shock the premiership season and not the friggin NAB cup.

I'm now prepared to concede to you that this amounts to tanking.

Can I get a bet on this game?

This is not on topic but if I want to get in touch with one of the mods to ask a question but not in the open forum how do I do that?

Thanks

Precisely. Not that it would wake him up, but it should be a short term wake-up call for Sylvia, given his lack of contribution and poor execution last week despite a decent game time - at where he currently sits. I thought he was very ordinary.

I don't know if this is my heart or not, but going into this I thought Port would win easily and then saw both the teams.

They're both resting players, from what I saw we have 18 players rested where Port have 8, yet I think our 2nd 22 still looks better....

.This is one thing I really cannot understand when it comes to the anti NAB Cup sentiment. Yes, they ARE like glorified practice games, but if we are preparing for the season ahead, what would you really rather do...

- practice in-house so that your new players get no exposure to any players outside of their own group, and more importantly, no exposure to any other game plan, or

- practice against real opposition with the added incentive of getting some money at the end of it (well, we already missed out on that part of the pie)

Regardless of what we think, I'm sure the football departments at most clubs probably relish the opportunity to get valuable insight into their players (the newer players in particular) and where they are at in terms of exposure to real pressure and countering opposition game plans.

Anyone remember what happened to Liam Jurrah a couple of years ago when the brains trust of Dean Bailey and co decided to play him on some god-forsaken oval in SA? He ruined his shoulder and we all cried about it for months.

Now that an actual coach is in charge, the other 50% of the nuffies who run this site are complaining about NOT playing our stars. Is there anyone here who actually thinks about the future? There is almost NO point in risking our best 22 in some random practice match, since they're already certain to be in our team anyway.

There are about a million other reasons not to play our best players (ha!), but I won't bore you by writing a list. Suffice it to say that Renmark is going to bear witness to two decidedly B-grade teams on Sunday, as well it should.

I have one thing to say about this game. I really hope nobody is expecting a win. They're taking the kids out there so Port don't get a look at the side they'll be playing in round 1, and I think there's very little chance of a result in our favour. I will however enjoy seeing Fitzpatrick getting some game time.

People really think that we're playing such a young side so Port don't get a look at the team that will run out in round 1 ?

Imo, they're just managing loads and getting games into as many players on the list that they can. Nab 3 and certainly Nab 4 is when they'll start playing their likely round 1 side. I think people read way too much into things on here.

It's Game Day and the Demons are once again headlining another blockbuster at the MCG to kick off the round of footy. MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
