Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

so 3 out of the top 10 are still ranked in the revised top 10.

Not sure Nic Nat deserves a number 2 ranking. I would have him around 8 based on the revised list and maybe rank him one or two higher based on that horrible word.... "potential." His absence from the 2017 season makes it more difficult to rank him. One also has to wonder whether he will come back with that incredible vertical leap after such a long injury.

he'll bounce back. they are a 2 win better side with him even with the current crop of downhill skiers they have running around.

That is a rotten draft year. Hurley as the number one retrospective pick doesn’t scream superdraft. Pretty much matches, was it 2003, when we had two picks in the top 5 (Sylvia and McLean). Top picks in a poor draft.

You cynic - Col just needs one good preseason to be a superstar.

Is there an argument to say with the value of hindsight 8 out of the 10 clubs got it wrong?

Plus interesting to note

a/ the club with the highest FD spending Eagles got it right

b/ the best draft and development team on the list (Essendon) nailed Hurley at 5

I feel a little bit sick reading that.

No chance Hurley is the Number 1 pick, though.  I'd have Sloane, Hannebery and even Beams ahead of him.

Agree . It is hard not to feel sick when you have the first pick and you choose the only one of the first 4 selections that on results today  is deemed not worthy of a top ten pick. But that is a consistent theme of our drafting pre Taylor.

Injuries have cruelled Dane Beams- when he’s fit, he’s a class above.  Unfortunately for him (and Brisbane) that seems to be a rare occurrence.

There’s some very talented, but very, very inconsistent players in the redrawn top 10.

It's worth remembering that this is in no way a definitive list.  Even the panelists can't agree with each other.  I didn't watch this one but on previous editions they've freely pointed out each others' biases.

For me, no way is Nic Nat still number two.  He's got freak factor, but I've never rated him that highly.  He's more of a wrecking ball than a footballer.

I absolutely agree with the above comment that this shows how poor a draft it was though.  Aside from a couple of A-grade mids and Hurley, we see a bunch of solid B to B+ players making up the bulk of their top ten.  There's certainly nothing like a Dangerfield, Hodge or Martin on the list.  Possibly a Goddard and some Headlands.

Your continual defence of Prendergast and Cameron is admirable, but without doubt, the two biggest "busts" of the original top 10 would be Watts and Vickery.

Even Yarran, prior to battling personal demons, played a lot of top footy at Carlton.

Now- your and other Demonland poster attacks on BP & CC are quite funny.

As you are all experienced AFL draft and recruiting( including opposition analysts) experts, with experience at multiple AFL clubs - I defer to your greater knowledge.

Have you ever met CC or BP? Have you ever talked football with them? Its well worth trying - your opinions may change.

I'll go even further, of all the top 10 draft picks in 2008, three players never received a rising star nomination - Watts, Vickery and Hartlett.  Hartlett was awarded the best first year player at Port.

Watts is also one of two former number 1 draft picks to never receive a Rising Star nomination (the other being Paddy McCartin).

Two of that Top 10 are current club captains, 1 has been a vice captain, 1 an All Australian, 3 are or have been in their club's Leadership Group, with 1 of those winning the Rising Star of the whole competition.  So, your comment about 8 of the 10 clubs, in hindsight, got it wrong - I think it's more of a case that 2 clubs, in hindsight, got it wrong.

True, the class of 2008 isn't riddled with superstars, but there have been many, many more than serviceable players graduate.  Of the entire group that we selected, 5 in total, only 1 remains on our list (Nev Jetta, taken at 51).

It's not about us being "experts".  None of the critics are claiming they are.  What we are critical of is that the guys that are the so-called experts, the ones getting paid top dollar to do this specific job for our footy club, they both failed time and time again.  Use whatever excuse you like, but they still failed at hat they were employed to do.

Guessing who will emerge at the top of performance comparisons and status is naive in a team sport. General performance is the measure that is most important. It is full of variables so extensive these cannot be fully listed. Team fit and function on most occasions is the closest reality measure we can make.

I doubt there isn't much they can say to change history, and they oversaw some of our worst.  There is no escaping that.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
