Have we enough Shekels or script to land May and Lever ?

Id rather lever personally.

Lever is handy but hardly the player many here seem to be moisting up over. He's of the size (regardless of his toughness) that will still get man-handled by the big KPF's just like Omac does.

We need a big, strong, experienced and skillful KPD in the team.

Demonland the day after a win:

The premiership is ours!

Demonland the day after a loss:

Trade everyone!

(Closely followed by 14 pages of arguing with each other about the order in which to trade - and who is the 'softest' of our players)

Other priorities other than a key back??? This has to be our number 1 priority.

A mature back up ruck would be nice.

At least we have our tall defence 'covered', they just need to improve a bit.

Happy to take May. Can't see us getting him without selling the farm.

Lever , i think might be more gettable ( realistically ) and might slot in and develop into that Gorilla minder we need.

It's a boneheaded idea to trade Tyson.

We get the May done with draft picks or players like Kent. Don't touch the midfield we're building. We still need another A grade or two in there. No point taking out the very good depth we have.

Otherwise, we go a lot harder at Lever, who is much younger.

Please go away with your pointless stats.

Watch the game. Not the stats sheet.

Surprise, surprise. A poster responds to your puerile offer of $10 to a poster to find 'one strong attribute that Oscar has to his game'.  A poster responds with not one but two 'strong attributes' - one percenters (which is actually a goods stat in terms of assessing a players effort level) and endurance, which is an obvious strength of OMac. And you derisively reject both points. Classic case of confirmation bias if i ever saw one.

OMac played well last week and was ok this week. And i watched both games. His effort, spoiling, ability to run back with the flight of the ball and not give away a free, his ability to play his part in a zone defense, his work ethic and his team first attitude are all strong attributes that Oscar brings to his game. You can give my $10 to Demonland.

May would be a fantastic get and is more primed for an immediate impact than Lever is.

However, we may have picked the wrong year to poach from Gold Coast.  They're going to demand a lot for him as he's a co-captain of the club, a very good player and vital  for their structure.  Brisbane and GC are going to have to put their foot down one day and make a stand or else players and other clubs are going to continue to pick away at their carcass.  Every year there's a lot of talk from them, but it never gets seen through.

I'm not saying we have to overpay, but I feel we'll have to pay what he's worth.  First rounder (10-14) and a player (ANB, Kent, Stretch)

End of the day we want the best 22 players in the league on our field. If May is gettable, he is an upgrade on present day OMac and Frost. I cannot help but think though that we might be making a mistake there as Rance and Hurley are the only two KPD who are better than Tom Mc and O Mac is progressing roughly the same as T Mac. I dont know what we do here at all.

I've heard that Lever is happy (only one source so not confirmable) but May is very gettable. As the last poster said, first rounder and something at least.

First Rd pick would suffice, maybe a fringe player at a stretch.  A first rounder plus Tyson or Salem is overs particularly as he is out of contract

big yes from me, big strong unit who uses the ball well. has good leadership qualities and most importantly a football brain.

our three talls the maccas and frost all have at times horrible disposal and lack footy smarts.

frost is only 194 - not a genuine tall these days.

we also are missing 1 tall kpf

in fact we are in pretty bad shape with kp talls and talls depth

Noticed may is listed as 193 & 102kg. I'd love a 198cm KD sometime. As for me i want him but only for one pic and no player. if that can't get it done walk away and hope we develop and gel by the end of the year.

How do you figure?

May is listed as 193cm and 102kg.

Tom McDonald is listed as 194cm and 101kg. Oscar is 196cm and 97kg, Frost a little smaller at 194cm and 94kg.

May looks to have a different kind of body shape but I don't think it's about size, it's about the way they use their height and weight. May is better at that and would be a great addition, but these guys can learn IMO.

For those that missed it, Sam Maclure asked Garry later in the program "You've brought May up twice this morning in relation to Melbourne...what do you know?".  Lyon said he knew nothing other than May was "very gettable".

Personally, giving our first pick and $600k+ for May (who plays next year as a 26 year old) wouldn't be my first priority.  I appreciate you can't have too many good players but we have absolutely glaring deficiencies with outside midfield pace, and a genuine 200cm forward/ruck.  I'd be fixing those gaping holes first.  Alex Rance wouldn't have done much on Brown yesterday with the way it was being walked in through the corridor.

In essence I agree with you WJD, however, if May is gettable I would think it is a priority. He brings leadership, strength and a mongrel we are so badly lacking. At his best he would make OMac,TMac & Frost and others around him better players and free them up for what they do best.Yes, we don't want to sell the farm. First round pick is probably too much, unless we have stellar run and finish high on the ladder (unlikely). Prefer a player and second round pick. GC won't like that but if he really wants to go players usually hold the whip hand. $600,00 may seem steep but after forking out similar for Chris Dawes it seems like chicken feed. Agree, re second forward/ ruck and outside speed but I'm not sure any more vital than the potential qualities May would bring to us. Anyway, probably a moot point. He will most likely re sign with the Suns and after they beat us this week why would he want to come to the Demons? *Money on Lynch to kick 7 given reasonable conditions.

Whilst i still think Lever an EASIER get and less expensive what of May ?

At 26 , a perfect age to come in. Ready to go, Should have 5-6 seasons in him and instantly fixes a problem, not maybe .

Oscar if still around becomes depth and a student in waiting getting the odd game through list rotation and/or injuries... As it ought to be.

Don't like our chances but obviously something behind the scenes prompting rumours.

Our list still short of 'fixed'

I'd recruit this bloke just so he can line opposition players up with his trademark big bumps. I'm sick of seeing us pushed around by mediocre teams like we did on the weekend.

Agree. Our first rounder should do it, maybe trade of late picks in there too. May isnt worth more than a 1st round pick.

Don't trade our top 6-7 mids: Clary, Jones, Tyson, Salem, Trac, Viney and (hopefully) Brayshaw.

This is purely opinion but Jake Spencer is a RFA at years end and is a Qld boy. I would be loathe to see him go but he has been forgotten in the rush to get Max back. We need a back up ruckman but Gold Coast rely heavily on Witts and GCS may target Jake if we start targetting theirs. As an RFA we don't have much bargaining power either.

As we know from other threads all clubs have the next 2-3 years planned for recruiting from under 18's, free agents and others who cannot get a game but may fill a role. I find Lyon's comments unhelpfull. We need to shore up our own stable and look after our a grders and reserves before we look too far afield

And this is why May has to be pur number 1 target ahead of Lever. Big solid defender that we haven't had since Chip Frawley. Its good to have rebounding defenders but examples like Hawkins and Brown will kill us.

Yeah. In terms of quality, it's Lever all the way. A lot depends on what happens to the existing guys. You never know when they might make like the Brown boys and free agent themselves away.

I'm for the May signing. Would get us very seriously considered for finals. But in terms of age profiles, I'd really love to see us stash a Talia type away and wait 3 years. The real red meat on the list is still 19-22.

Speaking of Lever. What does the Hartigan signing do?

Brown would not have been able to mark everything in the air if may were playing!

May is 5 times the player oscar is and oscar will be lucky to ever be as good as may is now

around the mark of all Aus for the next 8 years, leader

No doubt we should chase him.  I'm always a little skittish when it comes to trading high draft picks, but I think we're in a position now where our list is young enough that we can add these types of players and not miss a beat.

Other clubs will be interested, but I know we would have the salary cap room and the obvious position down back for him that we might be able to coax him down.  Hopefully the club are right into him at the minute.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
