  1. JVR will keep them honest. He will get to the contest and help BBB out. He has been whacking Petty all preseason. Cannot wait to see him slam into opponents when they get under the ball or have it. I love the way he uses his body as a weapon. Hoping for plenty of goal assist from Jacob, plus 2 of his own.

  3. In a perfect world, both teams lose, fold, and cease to exist. That won't happen, so I will go for the lesser of two evils and barrack for Richmond. May God have mercy on my soul.

  15. Something distasteful that in round three we have journos crapping on about possible trades for next season. Its almost that the game isn't attractive enough and they need to go peak titillation!

  17. Talking around 90k tonight. Living in Nsw, they would not get that for an Nrl grand final. There's only one real footy game in this great country.

  18. Looking at the emergencies you have to make Tmac the sub don’t you? If one of May, BB, Petty, Grundy or JVR get hurt we are up the proverbial. Tmac can basically fill on their roles and maybe the shorter sub minutes will suit him given he looks to be struggling with the foot.

  19. The Pies and the swans share a simlar game plan (as do we now too for that matter) - ball in motion, get it forwad quickly, agressive kicks and use the corridor. In many ways that game plan was a reaction to ours - it became obvious the only way to beat us was to play fast so our defence can't get set. The way to beat their game game plan is huge pressure on every disposal, but in particular kicks. Press up to deny space, corall, chase from behind, harrass. Add clogging up the corridor as much as possible. The Swans' game plan fell apart under the Cats pressure in the GF. The Pies did well to almost beat the Cats in the prelim - but ultimately lost it because their kicks to the corridor in the last quarter came unstuck. My tip is that scoring will go down now as the early season fast ball movment trend will disapate because if teams can't go with teams like the Pies, swans and the dees - and by that i mean literally leg speed but also conditioning - they will get dismantled. And coaches dont like that. So i expect to see more games like last night where teams look to take the speed out of the game and make it a kick to kick, stoppage based slugfest and clog up the corridor as much as possible. I suspect that trend wil start tonight because the Pies will cut the Tigers up if they just go head to head fast footy. The slippery conditions wil help the tigers turn the game into a scrap. As for our game, the key will be how much pressure we can apply. Pressure, pressure, pressure.

  23. It’s difficult to know what to make of last week. Clearly we were smashed around the ball, in every phase of stoppages and made many uncharacteristic defensive errors, including allowing players to get free 20m out from goal. Something we haven’t done since 2019-20. At the same time we were missing 3 incredibly important players, both for their ability, x-factor and structurally. I can’t see the same defensive errors happening to that extent with May leading the backline. Tomlinson did a serviceable job but Petty has looked under enormous pressure during May’s absence, which I think is because while Tomlinson is good one on one, he lacks May’s ability to goalkeep and structure up what has been a relatively inexperienced backline group. With May back I think we’ll see Petty back to his best as second key defender. Also in Kozzies absence we lacked pressure around contest, his X factor is also missing but his physicality, pressure and speed were a key ingredient in our midfield and up forward in round one and we suffered without him. I had hoped Viney would pick up the slack but he looked a bit off. We looked sluggish and let Brisbane move the ball outside the contest with little pressure, that would not happen with Kozzie in there. Lastly losing Max hurt and will continue to hurt. He’s huge around stoppage, he’s our number one contested marking option forward and behind the ball, he helps out the defense, he kicks goals and he worries opposition. I think it’s easy to forget but this is the best ruckman of this generation, possibly all time, he dominates games in a way no other ruckman does and he plays a selfless team brand that makes us better on every line. He’s also a brilliant leader, an onfield coach and the spiritual heart of our team. I have no doubt if Maxy plays out the game last week we win. How we cover for him will be a huge challenge, the inclusion of May behind the ball will help cover Maxy a bit, it’s also clear we’re hoping JVR will offer us better contested marking down the line and Grundy will cover the stoppage work. But it’s a huge challenge for us. I’m not too down on last week, take the FB, the explosive X factor forward mid and the number one ruck out of any team and they will struggle, let alone our team where these three are in our best 6 or 7 players comfortably and on field leaders for us. Imagine Sydney with no Ladhams, Papley and T McCartin, they would struggle. Our depth makes it feel like we should still be very good, and we should, but we’ve had huge outs throughout this early season and if we get through these three weeks with a couple of wins that’s a massive result. Ultimately if we can reach round 8, when Max should be back, at 5-3 or better, we’ve done well. Our best team, with Max, Kozzie and May all fit and in form will belt almost everyone the way we did the bulldogs. The challenge we failed to meet last week is without these players can we still eke out a win against good opposition. Hopefully we can do that against Sydney this week. For me it’s: Out: Tomlinson, Harmes, Gawn, McVee, Melksham(sub) In: May, JVR, JJ, Hibberd, Laurie(sub)

  25. Had the pleasure of sitting next to Oliver at the MFC season launch function, with Ooze sitting on the other side of Oliver. He commented on the significant step up required in fitness, but said he’d already cut his 2km time, by I think it was 20 seconds, pre and post Christmas. We had a great chat about footy and non footy stuff and he was more than happy to answer questions from everyone else at the table. Not sure if Ooze is naturally close to all the new draftees, but he clearly has a very close bond with Oliver, based on their interactions that night. I’m watching his VFL season with added interest, really hope he can make it.

  26. There’s not enough mongrel in modern day AFL. Not anything illegal or thuggish, but just genuine physical aggression. Daicos keeps being left along at half back to do what he wants. Collingwood would send Maynard to him and rough him and make him earn it, so why doesn’t anyone else? It’s odd to me. Throw them off, go after him. Rattle them a bit. It’s all way too nice.

  38. "Mackin is the older sister of premiership player Blaithin, with the two set to become the first representative siblings in the Demons’ AFLW program. Mackin, who also plays for Armagh in Ladies Gaelic Football (LGFA), will make the trip down under at the conclusion of the county’s 2023 Championship campaign. Mackin is regarded as one of the star players of the Gaelic competition, most notably recognised as the 2020 Senior Players’ Player of the Year – the equivalent of the league’s Best and Fairest or Brownlow Medal. She has three All-Star selections to her name, reflective of the AFLW’s All-Australian honours, as well as international experience in soccer as a junior." Love this! If she takes to the game anything like Blaithin did, we're in for something special. Also, we're presumably getting her as a rookie, so great for list management. That brings our list to 30, so we won't be participating in the Supplementary Draft on Tuesday.

  45. Some folks need to look at the GF 3rd qtr again. Jackson was directly involved in at least 5 of the 7 goals in its last 10 minutes. I would go out on a limb and say we would not have had that 3rd qtr run on without him. Sure the run on would not have happened without the mids but Jackson not only did the CB ruck work giving them first use of the ball he also ran with his midfielders to link up play creating goals for them. Would we have won without him? Maybe but it would have been a hard slog to come from 3-5 goals down at 3/4 time. As it was we sailed home. Our run on broke the Bulldogs. We gave Jackson the opportunity to play and develop with us and in that 3rd quarter he paid us back in spades. He doesn't deserve the rubbish said about him in this thread. That is best kept for Freo and Bell; the real protagonists in this.
