  1. Very impressive interview. He NEVER takes winning for granted

  2. Hi, Not one to normally start a new thread, and this could possibly have found it's way into an old Jack Viney thread maybe, but I just felt it's worth giving credit where credit is due. Jack had a solid year in 2021, but I believe he has lifted even more this year. With his history of foot injuries he has looked slow and his field kicking frustrated me in recent years. I always felt he was well behind Petracca and Oliver and I questioned whether his body had let him down and would he be able to hold down the midfield role for much longer. However I think in 2022 he's improved significantly, and dare I say it looks quicker and more comfortable running over the turf. Resulting in his output both in running lines and his disposal looking a heap better than I can recall from prior years. He hasn't lost his aggression and love of tackling hitting the player hard. Whilst his possession count isn't up at the possession rate of Oliver and Petracca, Viney just seems to be making the right decisions in games more often and not, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him right up there in the B&F count to this point of the season, just does the things that the coaches would love! He's becoming exciting to watch within out team, and that's something I never thought I'd say :)

  3. He was a whipping boy 2019-20 and was often criticised for not having any ‘weapons’. He’s proof that a good footy-brain trumps most other traits. A very important player.

  4. I have zero sympathy for other clubs. Nobody cared when we were suffering for decades. North used to smash us constantly and now it’s time to inflict the same pain on them.

  6. I really like Charlie. He’s the epitome of a footballer understanding, and then playing to their capabilities - and ultimately that becoming their strength. Every time he gets the ball our forwards run at him. He’s not going to bomb it, he’s going to pass it 15-35 metres with precision. I really appreciate him, and the effort and consistency he brings.

  7. I agree with the psychopath. We need to crush them, bury them, salt the earth, plant a tree where they lie, let it grow and then cut it down in its prime. Rinse and repeat. What? It’s perfectly healthy.

  8. Agree. Very impressive. Strikes me as a future coach. I believe he's one of those players who knows he has had to work hard to achieve success. It's the sort of background which he can draw upon should he choose to coach others.

  9. Pretty pathetic for them to get stuck into Ben Brown who they treated like crap in the hub and while his poor wife lost a baby. Maybe if after 10 years of being a gun key forward for that joke of a club they didn't turn on him the minute he struggled with injury and personal issues, he would still be there kicking them goals and helping them lose by 50 points instead of 100 points each week. If they think he left for money, they obviously have no idea what was happening at their club. He gets paid a lot less at Melbourne than he would have at North. They chose to bottom out and dump good quality senior players. They are where they are because of poor management. Cry me a damn river.

  11. ANB is an excellent example. I am still truly amazed at how far he has come over the last 1-2 years. His skills and split second decision-making/creativity has been great to watch. On top of that, he gets in the right places, applies a ton of pressure and generally kicks the goals. Results.

  12. Summary of some selective stats from Jack's H&A 2021 season vs this season (up to & inc. Round 9)... The stand outs for mine are... 1. Effective disposals up a massive 34% 2. Disposal Efficiency a lowly 60% last season to now pretty much AFL standard! 3. Uncontested possessions up significantly by 23% (a sign he is able to cover more ground and running more freely?) 3. 1% percenters (ie; ability to impact / effect a contest) up 50% 4. Rebound 50s (indicator of running capacity & ability to get back & help out in defence) up a massive 142%. Contrary to this is less inside 50s (off 31%) and less tackles inside 50 (down 36%) which may also indicate a slight role change vs 2021? 5. Intercepts (again ability to cover more ground and possibly more quickly?) up by a significant 44% 6. Turnovers down a substantial 26% Overall weighted score up a very substantial 29% vs 2021! #7 J Viney 2021 2022 % Change CP 10.33 10.88 5.3 UP 10.50 12.88 22.6 ED 12.33 16.50 33.8 DE% 60.32 73.63 22.1 CM 0.00 0.00 - Mi50 0.25 0.25 0.0 1% 1.50 2.25 50.0 CL 4.33 4.13 -4.7 R50 0.67 1.63 142.5 i50 3.83 2.63 -31.5 T 7.42 5.88 -20.8 Si 4.92 5.13 4.2 MG 266.58 247.88 -7.0 TO 4.75 3.50 -26.3 ITC 2.25 3.25 44.4 T50 1.58 1.00 -36.7 TOG% 77.17 77.88 0.9 G 0.33 0.63 89.4 Weighted Score 3.170 4.084 28.8

  13. From Bigfooty: More doom and gloom. Doesn’t matter. They will kick a cricket score against us next week. Could 186 be under threat? 160 points. Brown will kick 10 They are at least on a 6 day break coming back from Perth. Hopefully they can take it easy on us. Forfeit the round and send the boys on the Kokoda Trail. Lets get everyone on the page, then give them an ounce of coke and 15 boxes of booze. Go! Unless they go easy on us, our infamous Fitzroy defeat of '83 is in danger and BBB will beat his 10 goal haul. If they bring their A game this will be a 150 point margin. I think they'll ease off tho. No point going harder than you need to be. Will be satisfied with anything under 70 points Genuine question - what would people prefer:- total 18 player flood defence leads to final score where we lose 80-13 or play the more traditional structure and lose 166 - 52? The only way our forward structure will score 52 against Melbourne's defensive structure is if they take half a dozen blokes off the ground in pity. But to answer your question, I'd take trying to play proper footy and losing 52-166 any day over not even trying to score for a whole match and still getting thrashed. I literally can't name one player from our team yesterday who would be regularly getting a game for them. If they are at all serious they win by 100. If they put the foot down then it will get very very ugly. Can we just forfeit? Please? Hopefully the D’s just go through the motions and get a routine 80 point win, no injuries, fanfare etc just like we used to for 10 years. Lets pray they’re not in the mood for one of those ‘we owe these campaigners‘ a bloodbath type slaughter fest wins My favourite: If we forfeit the round it will actually increase our percentage!!!! Perfect week for the godees to rest …The whole side I reckon we can beat WC score. We have been living rent free in opp fans heads. I would say the same can be said for opp players and coaches. Not many would fancy their chances against us.

  15. I had forgotten that Charlie struggled for selection in 2019 and 2020 (only 8 games each season) while he played 18 games in 2018 and every match in 2021. It hasn't come easy but he's a potential 200 gamer Well done Charlie

  17. I think we should support Kade and appeal. Win or lose it doesn’t matter, just show support for our player. FWIW the last few tackle suspensions appealed were successful, if I recall correctly. Someone posted that Hawkins has concussed 3 players in tackles without suspension. He is much bigger than Kade and able to do more damage with heavy tackles, but has repeatedly got away with it. There are plenty of precedents to show to the Tribunal.

  19. Haven't seen enough of JVR yet to say who he is like. TBH i think he is probably so early in his development we may be seeing a young fella who is only about 50% to 60% formed in terms of his style/skills & methods around the big sticks. Still learning his craft and working his way through things. Early days and will probably be his own man, but does remind me (just a tad) of the late Greg Parke. More so than the Ox. The Ox is a tough comparison. Such a natural talent. Had a nice leap, very good overhead mark yet also incrediblly mobile at ground level. Bit of a bull with ball in hand. Beautifully balanced & capable of easily gathering the loose ground ball & finishing on the run even from 40 to 50 out. Quite adept by foot on either side which made it very difficult for the opp to counter. Would have/should have been one of the great CHFs of AFL had he not been crueled so many times. His 1994 finals efforts were something to behold and i really thought we were a show for the Cup that year had Jakovich not been injured. Regardless if JVR ends up being near or at the level of either of these Demons we'll have something very special to look forward to.

  20. To be fair to D17, the reference in the OP is only to the 'modern era of football', and every MFC supporter knows that the modern era only started in 2021. The period between 1965-2020 are now known only as the Dark Ages.

  26. Titus’s take on the game sums it up perfectly West Coast (38) v Melbourne (112) Expansion team West Coast continue to struggle this season but there were some promising signs as they only suffered their biggest loss to Melbourne in their history. The Demons scored 41 points in the first quarter, meaning they didn’t have to score again, and they still would have won the game. That’s almost what they did, as the Eagles lifted their intensity and managed to drag the Demons down to their level for long periods of the match. Melbourne though are like a boxer who tried to win on points, not knockouts. They do enough to make sure they don’t lose. They can score, but they prefer to let their opponent wear themselves out. The result of this approach is 16 wins on the trot, a feat I still struggle to comprehend. I’ve gone decades where it felt like we only won sixteen games. The thing about sport is you must enjoy the good times because we all know, the bad times are not exactly rare.

  27. And again, we see the MRO system is broken. Chandler getting suspended is fine in isolation, given what we know about the AFL's position on dangerous tackles. I'll continue to argue it isn't sufficiently different to Hawkins' tackle in Round 23, but consistency is nowhere to be found in the MRO playbook. Ryan getting one week is a disgrace, but provides the latest example of how flawed the box-ticking MRO exercise is. What he did was intentional, but since no player since Byron Pickett has has the level of intent required by the guidelines (i.e. intending to knock them out, pretty much), every bump is careless. Which means the only differentiating factor is the impact. Foley does worse than Bowey, so Chandler cops an extra week. There is no justification for Ryan's action being less of a suspension than Chandler's, none at all. The AFL continues to over-penalise players who are playing the game but stuff it up (Chandler) whilst under-penalising players who do things the AFL time and again tells us have no place in the game (Ryan).

  29. Forget that Chandler is a Demon and look at the tackle. He brings down Foley at full pace and as shown from the behind vision left side, lets go of him before they hit the ground. It’s not a bump, or a sling and is one action at full pace, where he released the player before ground contact. On that basis he has done everything reasonably expected of a player. According to Simpson, Foley is fine and I am unsure as to whether he was concussed. There is absolutely no basis for a suspension or fine on that tackle and I would say that about any player. That said, the MRO has proven itself to be inconsistent and hypocritical in dealing with incidents.and nothing would surprise me. Given Chandler is not a star player he will be treated differently and harsher than if he was one. If suspended we should appeal.

  34. We were about 20 goals up in the last quarter of the granny and the forwards were celebrating yet another match sealing goal, when ANB came running in and seemingly admonished the players that the job wasn’t done yet. Respectfully, they immediately focused back on the job at hand. Now THAT’S the mark of a leader!

  35. One point he made, which I think is absolutely spot on, is that the younger players coming through don't need to do the 3 years o cultural change that ANB, Gawn, Petracca, Oliver etc etc had to do. They are now learning 'on the tools' from these guys, which I think is the key to a successful club and dynasty - look at how the Swans have stayed up for so long. You think about the likes of Garland, Trengrove, Sylvia, Watts etc - really, they never stood a chance to learn properly.

  36. The coaches have stated that they do not put limitations on any of the new recruits and will play them when they show they are ready as they have with Dogga, Rivers, Kozzie and Bowey. So a call up may come sooner rather than later.!!!

  37. Ryan only getting a week for a deliberate bump that hit the head is absurd. Chandler getting two weeks for an unlucky tackle at pace comparatively is even more absurd. Why does the MRO exist at this point? Why are the AFL not held accountable for their lies? Protect the head… ok, then penalty for Ryan’s action is 10 weeks. To ignore the game around you and just hip and shoulder someone’s head is a basically the worst thing you could do on a footy field outside pulling a Barry Hall punch instead. I don’t mind Chandler getting a two week suspension for the unlucky tackle. I do mind the deliberate head bump having less of a penalty!

  38. I've got all sorts of respect for ANB. He is one of the un acknowledged leaders in this team and if his attitude and behaviours rub off on some of the younger guys, that's a massive plus for us !!!! He doesn't always set the stats sheets on fire, but his value is measured not just in kicks, handballs and tackles.

  39. That is exactly what will happen. Why? Because Bedford is next in line. That is how goody had used the medi sub role. And given they are clearly following last year's successful template for all manner of things, then that is how he will continue to use the medi sub role. I find it perplexing when posters who have followed us in the last 18 months suggest we will do things like rest players, drop nibbler (or kozzie, or spargo) because they are not kicking enough goals, change our approach when playing bottom of the ladder teams (eg by giving some young players a shot) etc etc etc. (Note: a caveat on the comment above, I acknowledge there is sometimes some grey between what people think should happen and what they think will happen. I'm referring to what people think WILL happen). By the by i think Bedford might also do some midfield minutes too, as he has been splitting his time at Casey between the midfield and high half forward.

  40. If there was ever a soft debut slot for him it’s this week I say get him in. If as everyone says once he’s in it’s going to be hard to get him back out - that’s beautiful - all for making our team better not a fan of this let him ‘develop’in the 2s. he’s physically ready, playing well. Should be playing in the top tier to develop against proper backmen no point in waiting for a slot that may not appear… Jakovich had to kick 60 something goals in 8 weeks as we had Darren Bennett going well at senior level… we were immediately better with him in. No point in a physically ready gun in waiting to be playing 2s its very different to throwing jack watts to wolves on QBD

  41. Though he played both forward and back at underage level, the club is developing him as a forward. We have no other young tall forward talent. B Brown and TMac retire in the coming years (ask will M Brown and Daw) and we need to replace them. We have Weid and that’s it.down back we have plenty of options after May retires in a few years. We’ve got Lever, Petty, Tomlinson, Smith, Turner. Roo will develop and stay a forward. He’s developing well so far for a young tall and will likely see game time at senior level next year IMO. He competes really well, not afraid of a contest, hits packs, shows footy smarts too. Exciting to see what he’ll become for our club in a few years.

  42. My question is, if the Chandler tackle results in say an AC join injury similar to the Jack Steele tackle, does Chandler get suspended? Or is concussion the only outcome based ruling in the AFL? Because I don't remember Hawkins getting suspended for the consequence of May having his jaw broken. I hope we challenge this one. We don't have much to lose, as Chandler coping an extra week is neither here nor there, but I am sick to death of big name players from big clubs getting off and our players getting reamed.

  43. Im still seething that a deliberate bump to the head by Ryan that had the potential for serious damage just gets 1 week. AFL pretending to be serious about head contact. Weak!

  44. For all those who DONT think having a big name matters at the AFL. Question: which player in 2021 concussed 3 opposition players that year and didnt get suspended? But wait theres more he also broke an opponents eye socket for the hell of it. Not only didnt he get reported or suspended for it he didnt even have a free kick awarded against him. Yes you guess it our old mate TOM, by the way May says I hope I didnt damage your elbow with my eye socket.

  45. They called Ted Whitten 'Mr Football' . I reckon that Jack is competing with Steve May for the title of 'Mr. Intensity'. On a related note, the elevation of Max as Captain was a master stroke for our leadership, however in stepping back a bit to become vice captain, I don't think that has diminished Jack's leadership role at all. Jack and Max seem to be pretty much the perfect conterballance for each other within the leadership space and in listening to both of them speak, it's clear that there is a strong bond, mutual respect and acknowledgement that together they make up a formidable partnership in leading the mighty MFC.

  46. Deedubs, WTF are you talking about? Firstly, Casey would not be beating WCE by 10 goals. Casey beat North Reserves by 110 points on the weekend but North had 3 AFL-listed players playing for them, not the 11 or so of WCE's best 22 that actually played against Melbourne. There were certaintly a couple of WAFL-level players playing for WCE but not the 20 or so that played for North Reserves yesterday. I note by your 2nd paragraph you were talking about Connor West looking like a 3-time Brownlow Medallist and by the 3rd paragraph WCE had become a VFL Reserves team. Seriously? Or are we just supposed to guess at the bits of your analysis you want to be taken seriously? I agree with you that talk of us playing in 2nd Gear is pretty superficial and of course not the way it works. I also think that in the 2nd & 3rd Quarters there was far too much bombing the ball into the forward line, but I don't agree that it's a case of just being able to extend the way we play in the dominant periods to whole matches. AFL Football just doesn't work that way. You have periods when you get run-ons, periods where your opponent does likewise, periods when you dominate but can't score, the same for your opponent, and It's not possible to play at 100% of your capabilities for 100% of the time. You do what you need to do to win matches and anything on top of that is a bonus. Look at the Port Adelaide game. Half way through the 2nd Quarter and it was 1 goal to none and we don't look like scoring, but we knew we play the game plan eventually we will break through as we did (and as we have in every game this year). I fully appreciate Melbourne have some tough games to come, but if you're so into game analysis why aren't you analysing our future opponents, all of whom have flaws and have mixed form at times. Instead you throw out a misleading statement like we haven't played a team in the Top 5 yet. St Kilda were 4th when we played them last week and that was after a 1-point loss to Port the week before. They're not in the Top 5 because they played us and lost! No-one seems to take account of the fact there are 9 teams (including 2 teams in the Top 8) whose positions on the ladder are worse because they've played us and 8 whose position is better because they haven't. If you don't like superficial statements on winning margins why do you throw out a Top 5 statement like it actually means something? We haven't played these teams but on revealed form the only one of them that looks up to our current standard (let alone your idea of perfection) is Brisbane. We have beaten Western Bulldogs and Port (away) who finished 2nd & 3rd in 2021. But suddenly because they're not in the Top 8 they can't play anymore and the Melbourne wins are worthless. Now that's superficial analysis if ever I've seen it.

Fingers crossed for a 100+ point win just like the Casey Demons did against the North Melbourne reserves in the VFL over the weekend. Would love Big Benny Brown to kick 10 goals against his old side too!
