    Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

    We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

    However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

    The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

    WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see Flanders go as well. Joel Jeffrey the one I’d be keen on getting out (unlikely, especially now that Rankine is out).

I’ve kept a close eye on Flanders’ AFL progress, as he is a Fish Creek junior and his family is basically royalty at the FCFNC.

To me, he lacks any real weapons to forge a successful career at AFL level (I’d have him back at FC in a heart beat though ❤️). Sure he’s tough in the contest, but the majority of midfielders are nowadays. There’s nothing that really sets him apart from others.

Are we seriously discussing dumping Spargo at age 22? The kid will improve.

No he wont! neat disposal, but does not get it anywhere near enough, is not overly quick enough either and doesn't hit the scoreboard enough. More to the point, if he continues to get games in front of Bedford and Chandler, then we will have gone BACKWARDS! IMV!

i hope we're all over this to be honest, although the concern is it's a bit mentally weak by him to request a trade. he was out of the side for the first half of the season due to a shoulder reco, then played some really good footy as he got his fitness back up at vfl level and was rewarded with a spot back in the side between rounds 13-18, he's got a good K/H ratio as a HB gets plenty of rebounds and has good speed. he would've been a lock for 22 games next year given their other HB injuries but has cracked the sads due to one injury riddled year. would be a handy replacement for hibbo out of the back half long term and should be a relatively cheap get at a pick in the third round probably. avg 22 a game last year 5 marks 5 R50s and has a pretty 50:50 contested/uncontested possession statline last year so he's not just a cheap racker-uperer. wonder what our interest was like in his draft year. he was a carins local so i wonder whats brought about the move other than he got grumpy he had to play a bitta twos which was fairly justified given his injury and their form at that stage. also averaged 366m gained this season and 80% DE and 78% KE as well as 3 clearances and 3 intercept possessions a game. im in... clearly

The way FORWARDS is not to cut and run on a 22 year-old who vastly improved his game between ‘20 & ‘21. He’s got footy smarts, is a huge tackler for his size and brings pressure. He’s also one of our players who lets me relax when using the ball by foot. You’re right, he does need to get near it more often, hence why there’s room to improve. He deserves another season to do that.

I’m suggesting that if Goody had been open minded about attacking a bit more, instead of being so uncompromising in changing his game plan, we may have gone further than we did this year.

Sure there’s extenuating circumstances, but after 10-0 only to finish going out in straight sets, some things need to be altered. Whenever we got a decent lead in a game, continuing to attack seemed to be the last thing we wanted to do. Instead, we entered a mode of trying not to lose the game.

Going out in straight sets is certainly the Fagan model.

Doesn’t get enough of it??? What are you talking about.  He played forward pocket / half forward.  Do you expect him to have 25 a week? He is only 22 years old, of course he’ll improve and if you think Chandler and or Bedford are better players than you are kidding yourself.  They are both of similar age and have not shown half the ability of Spargs

Spargo would be much more highly rated externally (and on Demonland) if he played for a team that used the ball better and actually utilised him more

He is one of our most naturally talented players, not that his output or consistency necessarily reflects that

Melksham kicked 4 and dominated the grand final, looked a class above everyone else on the ground. If JVR played the game Melksham did on the weekend the demonland servers would be melted in to the ground.

ANB was a 35 touch running machine when he last played VFL.

The idea that either Chandler or Bedford would be significantly upgrades on anyone just isn't true.

Chandler might be a slight upgrade if he can drastically improve his defensive attention, improve his burst off the mark and start dishing quick handballs more often. Might. Bedford probably leaves, but won't have a long career if he decision making and composure don't drastically improve.

For some 'Landers, the servers are the only things that go down.

Absolutely. Our delivery inside 50 has been appalling for 3 of the last 4 years. And last year Charlie was elite.

Long bombs into the pocket from inside the centre square help no one in our side.

Spargo at Geelong or Sydney would be highly valued.

In regards to Spargo and his amazing inside 50 kicks, can someone share exactly how many per game he actually gets? And percentage of those that are actually marked and scored from.

Cos let’s be honest if it’s one a game….

Here's one I posted a month or so ago- does this help?

Or alternatively,  why don't we say these guys are pretty ordinary kicks, so how about we try and find a way to get Spargo more of the ball going inside 50?  Wouldnt kill us to give him a run on the ball for 5 minutes a quarter.

I love stats, and sometimes I completely misinterpret them... in interpreting the image on the screen, have I mucked this up?

CPetracca = 124 @ 14% =17.36 at AFL Average 19% = 23.56 = that's -6 marks difference over 20 games...

COliver = 94 @ 13% =12.22 at AFL Average = 17.86 = that's -5.5 marks over 20 games...

M Gawn = 59 @ 12% =7.08 at AFL Average =  11.21 = that's -4 marks over 20 games...

CSpargo = 56 @ 46% =25.76 at AFL Average = 10.64 = that's +15 marks over 20 games... (in the positive)

TSparrow= 54 @ 7% =3.78 at AFL Average = 10.26 = that's -6.5 marks over 20 games...

JJordon= 53 @ 15% =7.95 at AFL Average = 10.07 = that's -2 marks over 20 games...

ELangdon= 50 @ 18% =9  at AFL Average = 9.5 = that's -5. marks over 20 games...

Total amount of marks difference negativeve and Spargo's postitive of a 20 game stretch behind AFL average, is 14 marks over a 20 game stretch..  less than .75 of a mark a match.

Spargo has the highest footy IQ out of all our smalls. The only knock on him is speed and he can't kick more than 40m.  I'd get him a personal trainer and see if he can't  improve his speed and kicking otherwise he is a regular 22. Prefer him over any other small bar Kossie.

I'm a fan of Spargo but he does have limitations (lack of size, lack of speed, doesn't get it enough etc).

I like what I've seen from Chandler (at VFL level) too and hope he gets a crack - but don't think he necessarily has Spargo covered in these areas?

Bedford has them both covered for speed but doesn't seem to be as reliable with ball in hand - not sure if its skills or decision making.

Spargo plays more of a HFF role, getting up the ground instead of staying inside 50. That’s his forte and he is good at it, he is a victim of bombing it in over his head. The team either need to make a habit of going through him, or he may as well just stay inside 50 as a crumbing forward.

Spargo is criminally under-utilised by our players. They either can't see him or don't look. The number of times he's free and positioned himself well to receive the ball to deliver into the forward 50, or is in the forward 50 for a shot at goal, and isn't seen is comical. Have a look at our last game. Brayshaw has collected the ball out of the middle and is running toward the opposition goal. Instead of hand balling to Spargo (4 metres away, on his own and facing the direction we want to kick), Brayshaw, runs past him and kicks over his shoulder - turnover. Grrr!

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

    Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

    In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

    THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

    Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
