Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

That right there is 21 of last years premiership side, missing Gawn and Macca.  Time for Trac to go forward and see what he can do with the terrible delivery coming in. Now that Salem is back, give Brayshaw a shot in the middle.  Weid takes second ruck.

To regain form you don't overhaul your game plan and structure, you tinker with the pieces that are not aligning; and build confidence. Note: It is crucial to do this without detracting from the working pieces!

No need for Brayshaw to go in the middle, but with Salem in, he can definitely go to the wing - which strengthens that position (no disservice to Jordan).

May to fullback is a no brainer.  This then realigns the back 6/7 to all working parts. The midfield don't need changing either, though Sparrow could easily make way for Jordan. Melbourne's forward line functions on 3 pressure smalls, Fritsch and two talls - this won't change dramatically either. BB will be one, Mitch and Weid are both very similar with neither being strong contest marks - Weid plays taller which may help. Though I'd go with a Tomilson/Petty rotation.

For me, and with consideration to keeping to the game plan / structure.

Anyone catch Goody’s media conference earlier? Club is very confident Weid will take his game to a new level very shortly.

It has to be Weid/Jackson forward/ruck combo this week…surely.

In Goodwin's R14 press conference just now, he mentioned that Majak Daw has a pectoral injury and won't be available for 4 weeks. Not sure why this hasn't been on previous injury reports or if his earlier absences are not related to this injury.

On Weidemann and what he has to do to be back in the frame, Goodwin noted his form has been improving in the last few weeks, that he's been working on things in the last 6 months that just haven't quite been seen on gameday yet, but that he's expecting we'll see good things soon. Interesting to hear quite a tone shift since recent pressers when Weid has been brought up.

I’m craving a different side this week. I don’t mean in’s and out but mainly a different look. I’d love Trac more up forward and Gus in the middle. Something different, he’ll be hungry in there. Rotate him and Trac or Trac and Viney. Change it up through out the game. Doesn’t always have to be the same. We literally kick out towards the left side of the ground from a kick in. Mix it up. We are becoming if not have become so damn predictable. We’ve lost our run from the backline. Our goals last year where mainly from the run and carry from the backline. This year we mark it on our defensive 50 and stop… the Oppo have time to man up then we lose that privilege of being in control and it now becomes a 50/50 contest

Richmond of late will chip around their defensive half then boom they’re off.

How bad is a torn pec, what can you actually do and can’t do? Only asking because Daw is in today’s training gallery (background pic5) fully kitted out holding a footy.

On Weid he may be being more positive because he’s simply running out of tall options to play F50 - they’re either all out of form or injured

Sam really just has to find a way to become a more physical presence in the game - I’m sure his skills are fine and looks the goods at training but once he crosses that white line we need to see a Demon - I’d get him to watch the way Neita attacked the ball as a forward as inspiration

I think this will be really good for Weid, work hard around the ground, it will make him feel involved, i think he will do well.

Our game will change on the back of turnovers and scoring. Simply, if we can convert opportunities, then we will win and get back on track. The Swans and Pies games, i think were not bad loses, and while not at our best, i think we were not far off in both games.

Pressure, hold our nerve down back and then get it in quick. We win.

Well if that's the case I would roll the dice and also play Van Rooyen in the forward line!

From the very same game:

Ben Brown - 2 disposals, 1mark, 0 goals, 1 tackle

It's interesting to weigh their forms and output against the commentary by fans about their performances this year.

Season averages:
Brown - 8.1 disposals, 3.3 marks, 0.8 contested marks, 1.6 marks inside 50, 1.7 goals, 0.6 tackles
Weid - 8.2 disposals, 3.2 marks, 1.3 contested marks, 1.5 marks inside 50, 1.5 goals, 1.2 tackles

For clarity, I'm not saying Weid has been good by any stretch, but comparatively there has been very little talk about Brown's extremely poor 2022. Would also be interested if there was a stat about contests lost, as he seems to have been especially bad at that this year. Rated as 'below average' for 7 out of his 10 games this year, including the last 5 in a row.

Brown is also miles behind his averages for 2021 in key areas like marks, contested marks, marks inside 50, tackles, inside 50s, and massively behind on metres gained - and some of those stats tell me he's not covering as much ground and applying anywhere near the same amount of pressure, yet he's averaging slightly more time on ground.

The pressure should well and truly be on this senior player who absolutely is letting us down this year, instead of the ridiculous amount of focus on a depth forward on a short and minimal contract.

These are not flattering statistics for Brown. Watching him play (with hope and reducing expectations), he seems to be the epitome of a 'lazy' player - one who is also scared of stopping opposition backmen with something as simple as a tackle. According to many observers, if he wishes to keep playing then it is past the perfect moment for him to enthusiastically improve.

Correct, but watch the umpires; at many opportunities for more rapid progress out of the backline, the umps permit delays invoked by opposition teams (of the many that are attempted) and are quick to invoke further delays and uncertainties should the Mighty Dees get the ball out of the danger zone quickly and appear to be well set-up to progress to score at a rapid rate. Across this season there have been many such examples and enormous disappointments. Opposition numbers and zones are treated to adequate time to get their desired possies, creating 'assisted' defensive zones and even separations to advantage away from the ball itself.

The umpires are conspiring to help our opponents are they?   Righto.

I always find it amusing that the AFL is bagged for its supposed incompetence - yet sometimes those same people think they are capable of organizing an ultra sophisticated conspiracy like having the umpires impact results or the (independent) tribunal doing its bidding.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to
