Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Both play reasonably well and end with 17 touches apiece, although Bowey caught my eye more frequently (you might even catch my 5 yo and I watching on from the hill).

Also, one year on and the draft has underscored how stacked this Chargers lineup was. Consecutive no 1 selections and 4 top 5 selections in across two drafts.

One of the things that’s very noticeable watching these highlights is the sort of ‘wave running’ style of the under 18’s comp. The pressure at the coal face is nothing like the intensity of the AFL (which is totally understandable given the age profile). Even the tackling pressure tends to be individual, where in the AFL you have much more team directional and front on pressure.

It’s a huge gap to overcome, and it really speaks volumes of the guys who can step into the AFL system at 19 and have an impact. It looks like the under 18’s play a different sport.

That has to go down as one of the best junior teams of all time.

Welcome aboard Bowey family.

Congrats to Mum & Dad Bowey. Must feel bloody amazing to have a kid drafted to the AFL.

Jake, if you play forward can you please tackle often, and chase very very hard? We could use some pressure forward of centre, not to mention that great field kicking of yours.

Good luck mate. Hope your career is long and very successful.

Thanks for the link ChaserJ.

Bowey looks like a leader type. Directing at the stoppage in the kick down field area. I like the spread he does and is happy to link and receive the ball. Twenty to forty meter kicks look good, though not all great. (The same for Laurie). I wonder if they both have a longer more penetrating boot? The close in play, with quick handballs and choosing the right player showed he has some vision and footy IQ. Can find space alone so must have some acceleration.

Laurie may be a lock down/run with type (tagger). Wasn't first to the ball, more followed the pack, not overly quick, nor a natural reader of the play. Liked his defensive job and works to keep the ball in his area. That low centre of gravity (strong hips), will make it difficult to be pushed off the space he chooses to take. Worked his way into the game.

Didn't see them get front and centre to rove the pack. Which is what we need. Both like to tackle, were clean with their hands and seemed to bring others into the game (not selfish).

not even close. Sure a lot of draftees but only Rowell has shown to be a good afl player amongst that list.

I think Bowey will debut first the wing spot is up for grabs and he's played a lot on the wing. He's a better kick than Baker who is an average kick at best. Could debut round 1 if things go his way.

Too be honest at 67? kgs I don't think we will see him till 2022.  Then he will star.

This player has been trained to play football from the moment he could run, his father was a small rover (168 cm) with some pace and managed 85 games at a time when players of his size were not in fashion. It is expected his father made sure he had the skills, pace, sidestep, awareness and tenacity to play the game against much bigger opponents so I don't worry about his size holding him back, he will get the best coaching from Yze and Williams along with the fitness and weight work to build his body correctly.

I saw Stan Alves and Robert Flower when they arrived at the MFC and within a few months played for the senior MFC team both player had great awareness which helped when you have a small frame, so maybe he will thrive in the professional football world and become a good ordinary player (Jack Dyer) like Stan and Robert, so long as he is never satisified with just being drafted and playing some senior games.

Thought I'd watch a half and make some notes

39:20 JB - clever tackle to cause turnover that leads to shot on goal (will need to work on strength/technique)
40:30 BL - beautiful step and hands to get out of trouble, then follow up and creative handball (but a little soft) to spring Macrae
42: 10 JB - hunts forward to tackle, play bounces around and back towards him and he doesn't overcommit, snaffles a turnover, wears a tackle and dishes to the runner who misses
42:40 BL - ball goes out of bounds, Laurie attempts a crafty flick over -sign that he's thinking
42: 44 BL - sneaks ahead of his man for an intercept, but fumbles and can't win back the ground ball
46:55 JB - doesn't overly attack the drop of the ball - which seems consistent - but is quick to tackle and force a contest
47:10 JB - misses an incoming kick, possibly confused with a team mate? follows up but quickly tackled
47:25 BL - attempts and fails to push his man under the ball
49:25 BL - ignored by multiple team mates, misses a tackle after the turnover
51: 22 JB - first man to support at a contest on the wing, gets the handball and nicely releases to a team mate in space
53: 05 BL - clever gather and quick hands
54: 05 BL - staying up at a stoppage swoops on to a loose ball but Noah Anderson is already on it!
56: 05 BL - breaks nicely in to space but his team mate doesn't use him
56: 20 BL - protects the drop of the ball nicely but drops a mark ?pushed/ ?sun in his eyes?
56: 55 BL - gets beaten to it by his man at the stoppage (Butler, bulldogs draft pick '19)
57: 02 JB - zooms from the stoppage to half forward but then only forces a fumble, could've won the ball or tapped it on, Laurie comes in to tackle after it bounces around
---------------------- QUARTER TIME
1:07:10 JB - gathers at the stoppage, evades and releases a nice handball under pressure
1:07:50 JB - pushes up to the wing (is playing high HF), marks, steps a tackler to get corridor side, Matty Rowell has snuffed out his plan though and drops back, so he goes outside of the boot and shanks it. 50/50 if he should've taken the easy boundary option first time. After the throw in he zips on to a loose ball and gives the simple hands
Bit of chasing and around the ball but nothing significant for both for a while here
1:15:35 BL - pushes up for the backline switch, fluffs the corridor kick but follows back up and gets it back to his man. More scrappy player and JB almost gets a chance, puts on some pressure and tackling
1:20: 20 BL - wins a contest with a nice bump off, steps and gives the little handball under pressure slightly behind JUH who fumbles, BL gets back on it, steps, releases a perfect handball on his left to a mate who should've scored
1:21:28 JB - snags a handball, quick hands, gets it back, quicker longer hands.
1:27:00 JB - uncontested mark, takes his time and goes long with good accuracy to the contest. Gets beat pretty easily by Anderson on the clearing kick out
---------------- HALF TIME

Laurie: the step and composure in tight seems legit, he knows how to evade and where his team mates are. Unfortunately not enough of it because he's starting on the bench and deep forward and doesn't get a lot of chances. He's very quick to take off forward, he might have to be a bit less rolling of the dice at AFL level

Bowey - sharp hands and knows where to run to receive the ball in space. Not overly convinced he's a forward though, he plays like he wants to be on the wing. Doesn't really hunt the drop of the ball or his tackles, more of a swooper. A few times he annoyed me with the habit of walking after the contest was over, bit of a pet peeve. 0 from 1 on difficult kicks after looking in board but I sense he's willing and able to pull the trigger.

As much as I like the nickname 'Ziggy', it must be remembered that Bowey rhymes with Yowie, not with Bowie.

Older posters may remember his father Brett running around for St Kilda.

I think you might even find that Bowie rhymes with Yowie also, in spite of the commonly accepted pronunciation.

I recently read an excellent Bowie biography written by Paul Trynka where it was confirmed that he took his  name from the "bowie knife", so in his case it does rhyme with "blowy", "showy" and "Joey".

Amongst my Demon acquaintances we've dubbed Bowey & Laurie as Bobby & Laurie

Picked as a pair in the draft it kinda/sorta makes sense ds

Rosman just rolls off the tongue ... could be a cult figure with that old head on young shoulders

Showing your age there, Macca!

Their selection may explain why we overlooked the Carroll County Accident.  :D

Ha!

This is the domain of the over 55's isn't it?

Couldn't remember any of their songs (Bobby & Laurie) but the Carroll County Accident was definitely a hit and they were very popular back then of course

Let's hope that Bowey & Laurie (and Rosman) become  equally as popular amongst Demon supporters ds

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to
