Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Having said that, I would take him at pick 3.  He has star power unlike Young, Ash, Serong, etc etc.   Im just saying that I doubt we will take him as Mahoney and Goodwins (and others) jobs are on the line in 2020

I would imagine/hope the club would have a longer term view than the next 12 Months, if they are that unsure of their jobs they shouldn't be there.

Yes we will

My initial reaction was Flanders and Young but I'm more than happy to substitute Kemp for one of those two, preferably Young.

I'd love to have a quick 192cm, 82kg player who can play in a number of positions.

This reminds me of the 2009 draft where there were two standouts, Scully and Trengove (?), with a host of others that looked pretty good too. Third was Martin and he turned out ok, we also took a player with wonky knees who just won our B&F. Think Kemp.

There were a couple of busts, but it was a pretty good draft, Fyfe taken at 20 and another couple taken at later stages of the draft who have been pretty good. This could be another draft like that. If we play our cards correctly we could walk away with a couple of really good players.

Amazing looking at that list that someone like Butcher who pardon the punt butchered the ball so badly was a top 10 pick!

Mahoney traded away our 2020 1st round pick to North , banking on us rising up the ladder next season.

We need to take ready made kids at 3 and 8 who can impact immediately.

Kemp will miss all of 2020.  We will not be drafting Kemp.

Or possibly he feels that the player we're eyeing off at 8 this year is better than anyone we'll get in the next draft?  Given that Kemp won't play next year you could regard him as next year's draftee.  His quality would put him well in the upper ranks of next year's group.

I look at that footage of Kemp and I see good burst pace and plenty of power.  His attack on the ball reminds me a little of some plays David Schwarz made in his day where he burst through tackles.  Obviously this kid isn't another Schwarz (wouldn't it be awesome if he were?), but he has power and explosiveness and he can kick.  We keep talking about how the club plays it safe with their picks.  This is another kind of risk, and we should back ourselves in to manage him properly and get a star out of it.

My first two were Flnders and Kemp, but starting to change over to Young as well.

I'm hopping this draft is going to be the one, we look back on and smile, fingers crossed.

To have both Martin and Fyfe playing on our team, how good would that have been?

Also i didn't know our own Jakey Melksham was a first round pick? Even though esscum chose him.

Gawny at 34 was a steal?

Gawny at 34 was the only thing that made up for picks 1,2&11 being ordinary.

I could understand  passing him up at 3 (although I'd be happy to get him there) but if he is still there at 8 and we don't take him I believe we'll regret it.

Exactly. Ditto. Agree.
I think Kemp is a Dangerfield type who don’t come up too often. I’m all for the risk of taking Kemp at 3. If he was injured he would have pushing up to Rowell/Anderson as likely no.1 pick.

I can understand choosing Hayden Young at pick 3 (4- depending on pick swaps or nominating Tom Green) as he is the type of ball user we desperately need

But if Kemp was available at 8, you CANNOT pass him up. Simply too good.  Tall. Fast. Great kick. Midfield. Goalkicker.  Sure you have the wait out 2020 while he recovers but huge huge upside for start of 2021.  He would be (on form at national championships) into our best 22.

I reckon there's a strong chance the thinking when we went after a second first rounder was, package two top 10 picks for an A grader at GWS or get two bites of the cherry in the top 10. This way, we'd get one kid who might be able to make a difference in 2020 and the second kid is so good that him sitting out in 2020 due to injury is worth it because of his talent, and in this situation, we'd still have the ability to service our 22 in 2020 with a Gould or Young type.

If our recruiters think Green is good enough, I'd be nominating him at 3, then going Kemp at 4 if GWS match and taking Gould at 8.

Butcher was a lock for pick 2, twelve months out from the draft.
Top 3 going into the U18 season were Scully, Butcher and Lucas... Things can change very quickly with these kids.

It's very unlikely that our overall fortunes in 2020 are going to be dictated by who we pick at 3.

When was the last time even the Rising Star winner was decisive in a team's season outcome? I'm tipping almost never - maybe Joel Selwood in 2007.

I still think we'll do some deals on the night with Freo and potentially GWS so that we convert 3 and 8 into 7,8 and 10.  If it's as even as people say around these picks then at least we get 3 goes at it - Freo and GWS would be open to a deal due to their Academy picks.

Is this possible? Not sure if rather 7, 8 & 10 or 3&8.

The kid looks like he has plenty of talent, but is this the 'risk' we all want to take?

I know it's been a talking point in terms of the club not wanting to take risks, but I'm not sold on this being one of them.  I'd rather take Ash/Young/Serong and then Weightman at Pick 8 and go from there.

I see your favourite player is Max, good thing we didn't adopt that short term strategy when we drafted him.

If Kemp is the player they want, they will take him.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
