The Cam Pedersen Appreciation Thread

Always thought that he was the best third tall relief Ruck option we have, and had he been in the side we may have won some of those close ones .

But I suppose we find things out as we go along and a forward line ofWatts Hogan and Pederson with Gawn in the ruck could see us do some damage in the last six rounds.

Weideman just looks like he needs another pre season

As many on here repeatedly said again and again

Our footy department lost the plot over this

You didnt need to be Einstein to understand Weid need more development

Cost us 2 games in my opinion, any way the Weid will have to earn his position now and I hope Pederson keeps him out all year

Has the best attitude of anyone on the field. He knows he's an average skilled player, but he plays within his limitations  and leaves nothing on the field.

I thought he was fantastic in the ruck, I think at one point he had more hitouts to advantage than his opponent. But regardless, he gave us a contest, he competed and ran hard around the ground, he is a pretty clever player and a good mark.

Most importantly he came in and played a role perfectly, and allowed us to keep our structures. First time since Round 1 Watts didn't need to do much rucking and he kicks a bag. No coincidence!

Although we do sing his praises today, and I like what he brings, his track record does demonstrate runs of games where he has little or no affect.  For me, his effort, two way running etc... without picking up lots of possessions suggests he does a lot of team stuff that doesn't translate into noticeable things. My basic appreciation of him is as a swingman and I think we need him in the 22 until a swingman is no longer needed. Even then, a place for him should be considered.

I've never been quite sure of why  Pederson has been dropped down through the ages! A number of times he has been plain "stiff" to have been dropped, when others were less effective. This year he has been held back beyond belief... I don't recall the 'one good game then mediocre' label that is being tossed around here. Didn't he play the first 8 rounds last season? Was it an injury that caused his displacement? I agree with all those that have highlighted what he brings... pack-crasher, genuine ruck relief, contested marking, goal kicker, smart decision maker... well he was on Sunday! This is his time!

He had a really bad cold.

I have never understood the 'will he be in our next premiership team' logic when selecting teams. As far as I'm concerned, the future is now.

It's up to Weed to knock the Bear out of the side. It's not until then that we consistently choose him over Pedo.

I have never understood that either Col. Just go with the most "in form" players vs roles/match ups on the day and make others from Casey play eye popping football over a 3 to 4 week period and the player they are looking to replace also playing 2/3/4 weeks ordinary up and down footy before looking at as a potential omission.

Playing the best in from players consistently will breed confidence, and understanding of how each player goes about his work and team cohesion. A self belief that if you play your role and play it well you are here to stay and won't be dropped for one bad/off game.

From there you can build towards finals....and from there... Hopefully ... ? ? ?

He is a bit of a cult hero, and I'm onboard. His quote before the game was something along the lines of "you never know when your last game will be, and I'm going to give it my all".

Shows a certain down to earth attitude, that when coupled with hard work, supporters tend to love.

I don't rate Bellchambers at all, and there are bigger tests to come, but it was a good start.

Bit of 'I told you so' but I called it after seeing the intra club game back in Feb that Pedo was way ahead of Weideboy and if we played Weid instead of Pedo we were putting player development ahead of selecting our best team to win.

Pedo is no star and expect he'll struggle to sustain yesterday's great form, but he knows how to position his body, compete in the air and gut run.  Weid needs another two pre seasons at least and plenty of Casey game time to get him capable of competing against men and surpassing Pedo.

I don't. I hope Weidemann plays well at Casey and kicks the door down for a re-call (not necessarily at the expense of Pedersen).

I'd never hope one of our young players is consigned to the seconds for a year.

Whilst i like to see players evolve i have no issues if the Weid plays oyt 17 in the magoos. He's young. We dont feed the crocodiles anymore with young meat. Surely we've learnt that.

He has ability has young Sam, but he needs a lot of development.

The firsts is NOW about competition and winning. If you not part of that solution, as they say, then you're a part of the problem.

Pedersen provides a fillip to a solution. He stays til usurped.

Can't afford to play callow development players with too many regulars unavailable and the season in the balance. Pedo can plug many holes ATM. Weed has plenty of time to mature.

Pedo missed an absolute sitter of a goal against Port Adelaide in our last win of the 2016 and I reckon he copped it in the neck for that.

You're right, our structure did fall apart after he was dropped, and Hogan and Weed were a terrible combo in the last 2 games of last year.

We got too cute at selections when finals were on the line.

I agree - did seem a bit strange that Pedo was dropped at that point, given that he was instrumental in the now famous 5 goal surge that finally buried our Hawk hoodoo late last year - (IIRC, after gathering a fairly ordinary pass from OMac and dishing off to Billy for a nice running goal, he followed up with a nice lead to a sublime JW4 pass and then kicked truly).

Let's hope he has a better run at it this time

Spot on.

I think what can't be disputed is that Weed has more of a potential upside than the Bear.

But whether he does reach his potential is a big if as well. We need to work on (as Donald Rumsfeld once said) 'known knowns'.

All for the development of the Weid for the future, but above that is the need of developing the team for the future.  Playing finals this year would be huge for the development of many players on our list and to do that we need to win games of footy.

I recall listening to Bomber Thompson recently about the flack he use to cop over playing Tomahawk, however my recallection is that by the time Tomahawk was introduced to their side, the Cats were already a powerhouse team with a flag or two and several GF's under their belt.  I just don't we are in that same position of luxury as that just yet.

I still see Pedo as a big part of what could help us take the next step, a bit like a Cam Mooney for Geelong in the day.  Not super flashy or fashionable footballers, but big tough effective team players that help others walk taller and are very important to the teams structure.

Harsh on Weid to suggest or imply*  that HE cost us games - he was selected by the selectors, and did his best, and was injured throughout most of his last game.

Yes I agree that were Pedo there in his place we could probably have won two, or even three, but to put the 'blame' on Weid is IMO unfair.

And, like mauriesy, I hope he bangs down the door and does earn his position pressuring who knows at the time.

* EDIT re reading your post I think you and I agree it was selection that may have cost us those games.  But, isn't hindsight wonderful.

Foresight’s even better. I was clamouring to keep Pedersen in the team all late last year and this preseasons.

Completely agree, have never understood why the coaches haven't liked him. I reckon he has played a good role in most games he had played in. Takes good contested marks, pretty accurate and long kick for goal. Always makes a contest in the ruck. Dishes out good bumps and sticky tackles. Anyone questioning his courage just hasn't paid attention.

ditto

I hope Pedo can settle into a Cam Mooney CHF role after Gawn comes back. Not the best player in the team but the team is much better with him in it.

Been very frustrating watching him sit behind Dawes for years and now Weed who needs a couple of development years if we learned anything from the Jack Watts saga.

Cam for a mature role-playing CHF please.

So, in defence of ProDee, whose judgement re Pedo has been questioned (and whose judgement re Jack Watts is also in some doubt), one good game does not make a season.  Pedo, like JW, has got to continue to show his worth over the next six weeks to cement his place in the 22.  This week he has shown he (CP) is currently a better bet than Weideman up forward and Watts in the ruck.  Allowing Watts to play forward throughout helped us kick a score that was defendable.  We'll have to wait and see if this performance is able to be sustained.  I hope (and think) that it is.

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium.
