I've touched on this in other threads but I'm curious to see what others think.

Some will have noticed that the song chosen for Melbourne's pre-game ritual, AC/DC's "Hell's Bells", has been adopted this season at numerous other grounds, usually being played just prior to the opening bounce. I've noticed this happening at the home games of Sydney, Adelaide, Carlton, Essendon and tonight, GWS. This may be something orchestrated by the AFL. In any case, it annoys me for two reasons.

Firstly, I liked the song itself as an addition to pre-game. The bells tolling as the team runs onto the ground I thought was a great and unique touch. This is purely subjective as some may not like the song itself or think building atmosphere artificially is a bit of a [censored], but not me. Now the use of the song is no longer unique which all but defeats the purpose.

What really shits me however is what it signifies having other teams use the song. If Collingwood had chosen a particular song to play when running onto the ground, what would be their reaction if other teams ripped it off? Eddie would likely be up in arms by Monday morning. Would other teams even attempt it? Unlikely. In this instance, it's happened seemingly without a murmur from anyone.

So what's the verdict? Am I making a mountain out of a molehill or is this cause for some annoyance?

Is it worth asking for a please explain? It's not like the club would have any rights over playing the song and to an extent the horse has already bolted. But I'd be interested to know if the club was consulted.

Poll added.

Choosing Hells Bells came about from the League's desire for fan engagement after Port made "Never Tear Us Apart" such a huge success amongst their fans.

Now Hells Bells hasn't generated anywhere near the support or significance but as i said it came from us moving with the leagues fan engagement push. If it's something our club feels they have worked on making a special part of our match day experience then I think they should request the AFL make it special to us. And if the AFL gives us nothing then play Never Tear Us Apart and see how Port react.

Honestly, I think it all goes to sh!t when our club song cuts in as the boys run through the banner. It's a classic chalk and cheese moment where a great guitar riff gets cut off by a wanky trumpet (btw, I love our song).

There's lots of other songs we could use to run out to. AC/DC has plenty on offer... Dirty Deeds, TNT, If you want Blood, etc..

My favourite, and preferred song is this:

For those about to rock (we salute you)

I really like the Hells Bells - there's the obvious connection to the Demons. The only time I've heard another club play it was at the Carlton game and I think they did it before the teams came out, as part of the build up. We should just keep it - doesn't really make sense for any other team.

It annoys me but:

1. Were we the first?

2. Did we do anything about making it unique to us. Can't copywrite it but maybe lodge it with the AFL that it was our thing. Port sing the INXS song, no one could copy that as it would be a blatant rip off but the hells bells is different.

Really would like to get it as just our thing or to move on to something else.

The segue between hells bells and the grand old flag is SO jarring and unpleasant. I say let other teams have it and find something that actually works into playing the grand old flag as the players hit the banner. Alternatively as RM suggested, drop the grand old flag and save it to the end of the game. The current pre-game thing sucks.

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
