Out of contract end of the year and has apparently been touring Collingwoods facilities. I would love for us to have a crack as he could be a good pickup if we could get him cheap.

Pretty dodgy of him to be touring another clubs facilities in the middle of the year.

Has a bit of talent, but at what cost?  Would the Dogs just let him go for cheap or play hard ball?  Do we even have anything to trade that would interest them...?

Hardly see Bugg as a recruiting coup. Lin Jong is a better footballer than Bugg, but I don't see him as addressing a critical need.

If he's touring the Collingwood facilities, the pies and his management are in all sorts of trouble. can't be done in contract. 

If they would take a third rounder for him then sure, happy to trade Lynden Dunn for him?

Fairly sure it can be done in contract but it all comes down to who approaches who. If a player approaches a club then they can do as they please. If a club approaches a player then it is a big no no.

Just can't sign contracts, but no problems with talking or even touring facilities, legally at least.

Geelong flew over the coach and half the leadership group mid-season to tune Travis Boak a few years back.

Let's offer the Dogs pick 27 and give Jong a 4 year 400k a year contract and give him a years holiday to freshen up. we're in desperate need of a mediocre backman to run the ball out of defence

I'd agree that he is better than those listed, but, is he in our best 22?  There is obviously interest from elsewhere, so should we focus on someone who might cost a little bit so he can play in the twos, or focus our energies elsewhere?

Jong is a respectable player but I don't think he is a priority 'type' for us at the moment.

I wonder why there are so few rucking tall defenders? We could really use one of those.

He has some decent attributes - fast, tough, decent goal sense. None can compensate for his average skills.

I want players who can be relied upon to hit targets. We have enough of the alternative.

Pretty sure that's against the rules of the competition to approach a player directly while under contract (which is what the Bombers were getting huffy about). Wouldn't be against him coming to Melbourne but he's not the be all answer to what we're looking for.

His skills are ok, my biggest concern is that he doesn't get enough ball for an inside mid at the top level.

If we were to "punt" on a player that could have upside in them like a Lin Jong, I would prefer punting on a key back as that is our deficiency.

Can't see where he would fit with us but would fit in with the excess of medium sized players that Collingwood have picked up over the past 2 years.

If he was delisted then what about a rookie listing?

Really?  I would have thought the main issue was the deceptiveness of the meeting.  Meeting with a contracted player whose team is trying to make top 4 and play deep into September is stretching the boundary of ethics and the rules in the recruiting game. 

If recruiting is now 'dog eat dog' as Buckley says, then his club and the likes of Ess. Geelong and Sydney have made it that way.

We make things difficult for ourselves in this country. I'm astonished there isn't strict rules and regulations in place to ensure that ALL agent meetings are post-season. In the NBA, teams are not able to discuss an upcoming free agent's prospects of signing with them until the free agency window has opened. Outside of that, a team can waive "rights" to a contracted player, essentially make them free to join whoever they want at any time. 

What we're seeing in the AFL is teams meeting with a player's agent while they're still contracted to another club. This puts said team at a disadvantage because while said player is exploring other options, the team they're actually contracted to is being told that contract negotiations are "on hold", when they're anything but. 

The AFL needs to stamp its authority on this. There should be no discussion -- publicly or privately -- of a team exploring signing a contracted player in the off-season. We all know that Hogan's agent has had discussions with WA teams, that others team have contacted McDonald's management. This should be reserved until post season, and teams that break the rules should be punished.

It's a farce. If the AFL ever allows the free agency system to go the way of NRL's, I'll quit this game.
