Very happy.

Certainly goes against the trend of unsigned players leaving it so late to recommit.

Good news, but I doubt anyone thought he was actually leaving.

Very good news! I'm super thrilled about this. McDonald of the Tom variety is a major part of our future as a serious contender and I think Oscar could be too.

Great stuff from both of them! OMac was pretty scratchy for a while there (understandable he is still developing) but he has definitely been improving in recent weeks.

TMac I never really thought he was going to leave, even though he put off the contract talks I think it was to gauge the clubs development before deciding. Hard to argue with how we're going now! If he can get rid of his brain farts he would be an excellent player for us, as it is he is still very important and he's in Red and Blue for another 2 years.

Not to ruin the moment but anyone else find TMac's choice of the 2 year deal surprising?

Not really I met him and said earlier in the thread that I think is is very Ernest and would be keen to do the best monetary deal possible. Fair enough. I think it shows he thinks he will do better with a short deal now and keep ramping it up.  No doubt we will restart our negotiations again this time next year. Both parties will know then if success is on its way.

Ah yes,  the ol' plausible deniability !!

Good to see all parties arrive a sensible outcome.

I'll leave all the spin for the bin. The McDonald's must be a very chirpy lot this week. It must be something a bit special to get to share this level of the game with a sibling. I'll trust the FD to follow through on its thinking that these to can form part of a formidable backline. Much work still to be done  but congratulations lads.

Who wouldn't  want to be a Demon, especially  now.

Mahoney was just interviewed on SEN and said the club wanted more than 2 years with Tom.  The club is confident we will improve further over the next few years and then they look at it again. (paraphrasing).

While the 2 years coincides with his FA it doesn't worry me too much as the 2 years may have been the only way to bridge the (reported) gap in $$$.  eg "Tom, take our offer of what we think you are worth now and if you really perform over the next few years we will up the $$" type of conversation.  ie the compromise is the club gives up years on the contract and Tom gives up $$.  Tom backs himself in to improve and signs up!  Good on him - it shows he is committed to getting better and has a real incentive to improve.

I think it's a very sensible approach. Now we just get back to playing and improving the footy.

This is great news and very important the deal was done. This is a boon for confidence going into next season.

Tom MacDonald clearly backing his ability to improve further again and be worthy of a larger contract in 2 years' time.
I don't doubt him either. I think he'll improve to be one of the best 3 defenders in the league at that time, if he isn't already.

His next contract will be the big one for his career. He'll be 25 and probably one of the competition's premier defenders then. I expect a 4-5 year deal on big money - he and his management may have taken the view that anything too long this time would eat in to the term of the major one up next.

This speaks wonders for the progress of the club. Tom clearly thinks he is worth more than the contract he has signed. But despite that he has chosen to stay, he sees potential success. Big signing(s) in more ways than one.

Fair enough.   There are some incredibly deranged posters who contribute to this excellent site.

I said there was no issue with Tom staying after I had spoken to him, good to see Mcs locked away

Are you implying that there was an issue with T Mac staying before you spoke to him?

Have you ever looked Saty in the eye?  I have. The man has super powers. Why with one stare he can put a buffalo on its knees. A bit of horse whispering has done the trick with T Mac.

For someone who can't take any criticism at all, you pick an extraordinary amount of unnecessary fights.

I can take criticism precious, it's non existent on here, same as reasonable debate, just a bit of fun, don't read it if it bothers you, others seem to be able to make pithy comments, is their a list of allowables?

No I was saying the 'impression' I got when talking to him was he would sign sooner rather than later
