It's not in Essendon's DNA to get someone low key like Macca. Last time they tried that it went badly pear shaped (though history is looking a LOT kinder to Matty Knights than was suggested at the time).

Both the selection of the late Phil Walsh and the apparent appointment of Pyke were clear targetting of a candidate.

They got their men.

I believe the AFL convention is that he can leave his contract at any time for a higher level position - i.e. head coach at another club.
