Market forces will determine his worth.

If other clubs are offering him $550-650k a year then, guess what, that's his worth!

He's a valuable swing man who can take a big grab and regularly gets 20 possessions a game pushing up from half back when he's playing defensively, providing run and attack.

Worth it, but it's going to depend on what we get offered as he's not a free agent - if it helps us land a Shiel or a Treloar, bye-bye Jeremy!

Hope he stays, but in all honesty it wouldn't bother me to much as I'm expecting one of him or Watts to be traded out at years end.

Two flankers who can swing to either end of the ground but neither capable of playing in the heart of the midfield is probably one to many.

Reading that article it sounds like a promotion leaked by his manager to generate interest. Trying to cash in on the Frawley experience? Sums around 650K are a joke unless he plays like Buddy Franklin this season.

Probably 10-12 players more important to us than a serviceable flanker who takes some great hangers. Good to keep him but happy to get overs in picks or players to build our list.

Agree. Perfect spot for MFC really. He is non essential, and would give us access to a player more valuable.

No they don't. As a restricted free agent they make an offer and we can match it, or not. I guess if we match it he could still say he wanted out in which case I guess the club might trade. Though that doesn't seem logical. I'm not sure if he goes as a restricted free agent if we get a priority pick

this is jeremy's 5th year, so he is neither a FA or UFA. clubs will have to trade

Let him go at that money

Good average player.

Do the trade and move on

I hope he goes for 650k. We'll get another pick straight after our inevitable top 10 pick for ladder position.

That said, Howe has the potential to be a very good player and has been very serviceable since Roos arrived. Sweeping half back that will learn a lot from H. But he's not worth more than 450k.

650K......

For a bloke that kicks every second possession out on the full ......
Tell 'im he's dreamin'.

Weve got some players coming through. He's (jh) hardly irreplaceable id have thought.

Well he could go to the bottom club in the PSD, that would give him a good chance of finals.

With the CBA to be negotiated over the next two years before coming into effect in 2017, $650k could well be 'unders' for a 5-7 year player.

Spot on. The money is not an issue. He's 24 and yet to reach his prime. Unless we trade him for a midfielder who we'd consider to be in the top dozen players at Melbourne, I'd rather keep him.

I'm sick of our constant rebuilding, so a low 1st round pick is of no interest, and based on our trading strategy under Roos, I'm confident the club will feel the same.

I don't get it........A d***k head jorno states that a player is asking $650,000 a year

How the hell would he know......Last time I looked no one besides the player, his manager and the club would know what ANY player is getting.

They all GUESS.......No one knows what Garry Ablett is getting ( they just know that it is a lot).....They all just pick a sum out of their arses and state it as fact.

Im not convinced there's a bottomless pit of money as far as footy is concerned. The networks are struggling and the whole industry is bound to morph over these coming years.Im aware the CBA will forecast another truckload (bigger) of gold but i have my reservations.

Your notion of fair value or even unders might eventuate or not. Either way Howe wouldn't be worth it it the context of the players that would surround him on our list then. The Geelongs and Hawthorns understand very well true value.

The money of our cap will need to go somewhere of course. Probably better choices to come though than throwing it at Howe.

Honestly, I'd rather cut ties now and do a valuable trade that suits us, than wait until he becomes a restricted / unrestricted free agent and get compensation. Remember the article featuring roos in which he mentioned clubs would look at trading players before free agency to get more currency? Something I can definitely see happening. If there is any doubt in the players willingness in wanting to be at this club, we will do our due diligence to ensure we move them on when the time is right.

Players sign early, players put off negotiations.

We trade in players, we trade out players and we ditch some altogether.

I love all the players with the knowledge that they come and they go.

The Scully debacle has left me an emotional vacuum.

$650K is around 6% of the salary cap going forward.

This is the relevant figure - % of salary cap. Without it you can't compare how much a player is earning relative to others, which is the thing that matters. The fact that 650k sounds like a lot of money (and it is, if you're comparing it to your own income) is irrelevant.

I reckon too many people get stars in their eyes when looking at player salaries.

I wouldn't be opposed to something like Howe + Pick 5 for Shiel

If we could land that deal then I'll pack his bags for him and arrange the farewell drinks.

Howe is the perfect example of a winnable trade. Other clubs would rate higher than his actual worth and it gives us an opportunity to work a trade with someone like a GWS (who put an offer for Howe last year) for one of their mids.

This is exactly right.

I don't think 6% is over the top provided he stays fit. He is still one of our top 5 players IMO. (Although Hogan, McDonald and Viney are rising quickly.) And has only missed one game since 2012.

He ranked 5th at MFC in Supercoach points per game last year and 2nd this year. He is also ranked 86th in the AFL (and 16th in the AFL for defenders).

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
