Sean Wight was another who sadly passed away far too early - it is a terrible run of coincidences.

Not that I believe in curses, but only because the topic was Melbourne people who have died young recently, the most tragic of course was Troy Broadbridge, dying in a Tsunami on his honeymoon a few years ago.

This club has suffered badly on and off the field recently.

Speaking of curses...I know this is kind of irrelevant to the thread... but have you guys noticed that a lot of people who have been affiliated with Melbourne has either gone really sick or passed away. For example, Neale Daniher got diagnosed with a incurable disease today I believe. Jim Stynes sadly passed away. Dean Baily sadly passed away. I obviously don't believe in curses, but I've just noticed a pattern which seems to be exclusive to us.

Talking on the couch saying that Peter Jackson should go to Paul Roos and say you can't trade these early picks unless say pick 3 went for two top 20 picks

basically said we need to flood the club with good young talent and focus heavily on development, time for a traditional rebuild with some decent people in charge

I think we have been there, circa 2007 to 2010. The blueprint was kids and more kids at the expense of older players. That was a disaster of 186 proportions! I think all we did was develop a crèche mentality for young draftees who were told too often success would just happen because they were the blessed.

We then started to draft in a mix of older players and some raw youth and that has proven itself not much better I am afraid. Of course that outcome has been impacted by the Neeld effect, by the loss of Clark, Jurrah, the injuries to Hogan and on and on.

Where to next I wonder? I believe Roos will try to flood the club with recycled players who can play a role but more importantly have demonstrated themselves to be mature, coachable, AFL standard journeymen. In the hope of making us middle rung competitive.

You of course are against the unfair draw some clubs get which affect wins and revenue.

Also draft academy's of some clubs . The Swans will get 2 boys in the next 2 years who are top 5 but will go at about pick 20 for them each year.

Also that the Pies were allowed to take an American player this year who was denied to clubs like us which couldn't afford to go the US to interview him there.

Also the extra salary cap of some clubs which allow players like Buddy and Tippett to go there.

Also FA which has been brought in to bolster the top clubs as has become evident. We will lose our 5th player this year to it. See any champs under FA asking to come to us?

Also rules made on the hop like the Judd salary sham allowance from Visy yet denied in 3 seconds when we suggested we would do the same to try and retain Scully.

Yes you are against all these handouts aren't you, or only one given to us because we are crap as a result of our incompetence and the system we play under.

I agree with with idea that we should ask the AFL to either give us a PP or provide us with the same level of access to prime time television as other clubs, so they then choose give up a draft pick or have a shite team playing in prime time and screwing their ratings.

I think we had the right idea but executed it terribly, we drafted the wrong kids, not all wrong but some, our development has been the worst in the comp easily, we haven't really had leaders since Bruce, Yze, Mcdonald and co,

if we can get in guys like O'keefe, Malceski, Cross, Vince, Jones, Dawes, Garland and fill the gaps with some really good young players and develop them well, I think we have a good enough coach and plan to get it right this time

Though something tells me Paul Roos is after instan success and will trade some of them out.. That could get ugly.

Get Ryan O Keefe in and play him rotating midfield forward and providing on and off field leadership. Daniel Cross can't do it all by himself.

Let these young kid bang the absolute door down to the point where they have no chose but to then squeeze Cross and O keefe out. Not gift games but make them play atleast 10 to 13 VFL games in a row. If it takes a year to break into the side so be it.

Hawthorn and Geelong do it so well.

A Petracca and Brayshaw along with Viney Tyson Toumpas and Stretch would set our midfield up for the next 10 years.

I reckon we go to the AFL and say we are going to lose as many games as possible and lose ugly (which is really what we've done for the past few years). We can then market to the hipsters to barrack for Melbourne because its ironic, thus growing our membership whilst hurting tv rights and takings for other clubs during our away games.

Couldn't agree more, we need to bite the bullet, accept it's going to take time but absolutely milk the time we have with Roos and Stone and make sure we develop this crop extremely well, Petracca is absolute superstar quality and Brayshaw is going to be a steady quality midfielder for 10-12 years

Great post, Redleg. There is already so much inequality in the AFL, and you've highlighted most of the main points.

The draw is the one that gets on my goat. These days, a good draw equals money in the bank, and money in the bank equals success on the field.

To all of you doubters, do you think Hawk or Filth fans have any qualms about the premierships they won using priority-picked players?

You can't on the one hand say that we are the worst club since Fitzroy that will be dead in 6 years and then say we shouldn't apply for the rule that attempt to mitigate this situation to be enforced on the league.

Every other club then has the opportunity to gain the first pick (if that's the case), we don't have to try and develop another U18 talent in a poor side, and we gain access to a player/s that has been in the system for a few years like a Tom Mitchell or Jeremy Cameron.

Drafting young players takes to long and our club is fast running out of time... Its clear we need some kind of assistance, but im not sure an extra pick is the answer... We need a "priority salary cap allowance" that can help us to draft free agents and trade in astablished players... Otherwise we will never be able to compete in this competition and we will just become a development club for the wealthier clubs to pick clean every two or three years...

A salary cap allowance would even up the odd for weaker clubs... The AFL need to have a serious look at this issue...

Parking around AAMI stadium is expensive during the week isn't it.

Maybe a COPA could be justified.
