Melbourne turns to meditation under Roos

Stumbled across this article. I didn't think it would be long before Roos would introduce meditation to the players. I'd be interested to hear other peoples thoughts on the topic. Personally I think the mental side of the game is extremely important & if this can help some of the players then I'm not against it. It has been successful in the NBA for Phil Jackson as well as Roos at the Swans so there is a record of it being beneficial.

There's a lot of whacky things out there but meditation is one that is both logical and has evidence behind it. That said I like that it's voluntary as it wont be much help if you don't enjoy it and if combined with some stretching could be a real benefit.

Roos is putting in place a lot of things I like, including this. I expect big success. Being better people should mean becoming better at doing whatever it is that you do.

Nothing new. Our supporters have been into mediation for the past seven years trying to get reality out of their minds and developing inner spirituality and an understanding of the good that comes from being humiliated on a weekly basis throughout the winter months.

This is probably THE most important thing Roos will bring to our club.

We spend 95% of the time training bodies and their minds let them down when idiots like Neeld come along.

This will be the single most important thing Roos does ,and will let the players hit the "refresh"button after a bad game, quarter or week.

Essendons attempt at getting an edge through drugs is in stark contrast to this simple, time honoured technique.

Knew this was coming and I posted as much after reading his book. His wife is heavily into meditation as is Roos. Can't hurt.

Clubs are now doing Yoga as well. Meditation is great and someone asked him on radio the other day how he relaxes and how he comes across as so calm relaxed and the first thing he said was meditation. He said its the answer to everything.

He may need to sneak down and in the rooms and do some during the matches if past results are anything to go by. But its good he is showing the players different ways to do things.

Mind training and mental relaxation is a very important in any sense. I am glad MFC are teaching this to the players for life, not just footy. My only worry about this is his wife's training is a PhD in Parapsychic Science from the American Institute of Holistic Theology. Personally I think homeopathy, naturopathy, natural remedies are the way to go and I favour that view of life, but a lot of stuff taught in those "Institutes of holistic medicines" end up being rubbish.

If I hear of any MFC player sitting in the ocean at midnight under a full moon, communicating with the universe with the help of dolphins, then I will know that Mrs. Roos may have taken it all a bit too far.

7 years of mediation Jack......must have been some legal case!

It's not for everyone, but it will help with learning the difference between being a good footballer, which all young players want, and playing good football, which is what they need.

That being said, a fair dose of narcissistic egotism seems to work for KPFs.

Sure beats the Bombers "whatever it takes" option.

Good on him.

If it gets us up, go for it.

Why not try it yourselves! It does work.

...My only worry about this is his wife's training is a PhD in Parapsychic Science from the American Institute of Holistic Theology...

Personally I'm a bit surprised and disappointed that anyone can claim the title PhD from a course run by a non accredited institution. Surely such a qualification has to meet minimum standards to be meaningful, and I'm authorised it can be legally used if bit legitimate. While I can believe extensive study and experience in the field meditation may be something someone can have, I'm not sure that "Parapsychic Sciences" is a field of study that can be backed up with real scientific evidence to claim a PhD could be achieved in that field.

Maybe I'll set up the Melbourne Institute of Study and award people PhDs in whatever topic they like if they pay me for enough subjects? I'll give a great rate to demonland members on courses for my "PhD in Internet forum football knowledge" so you can change your name legally, such as to Dr Maldonboy38!

natural medicine and remedies? Yeah, there are heaps of plants that have great properties, and a whole life approach to life balance and treatment can be beneficial in treating ailments, compared with taking medicines to treat symptoms but not fixing the root cause.

But homeopathy? If I knew any players were doing that I'd be pretty worried.

For those who don't know, a quick Google search will show that homeopathic medicines actually contain nothing. Plain water or alcohol. Nothing else. They may have started with shine of the substance in then but then are diluted to such an extent that there is nothing left.

For example, 1 ml of a solution which has gone through a 30C dilution (a homeopathic term) is mathematically equivalent to 1 ml diluted into 10^54 m3 - a cube of water measuring 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 (10^18) metres per side, which is about 106 light years. Seems sort of pointless and I can guarantee it would have no benefit.

That's not the only crazy part. Apparently the dilutions only work if you bang the solution enough times when diluting it (called "succussion"), because apparently succussion activates the "vital energy" of the diluted substance.

Attended the AFL Victoria community football media awards yesterday where Mike Sheahan was the guest speaker. After giving a really engaging talk for 30 minutes, Mike took questions from the floor & someone asked him what he thought Paul Roos would do for the group as coach, & when he (Sheahan) had first thought Roos was interested in the job.

He said after they film 'On The Couch' they head to Lamaro's for a few 'post-show frothies'. He said the debate was going on about Melbourne's list (as it often did) with everyone putting in their two-bobs worth except Roos, who sat back, just listening. Sheahan said there was then a pause where no one spoke for a second, and Roos piped up & said, 'you know, Melbourne's list isn't as bad as you think'. He said Roos & Alistair Lynch (who was also there) then proceeded to put together their best 22 on Lynch's phone, with Roos giving a full synopsis on each players' strengths & weaknesses, how he'd play players differently etc. Sheahan said Roos' clear knowledge & research of the younger 'unknowns' said to him that despite Roos indicating to that point he wasn't interested in the role, he was already clearly informed on the entire list, beyond that of someone who wasn't interested in coaching the club.

Speaking specifically about certain players, Sheahan said Roos said that Jack Watts has until now believed he's been working hard, but that this summer he'd truly discover what hard 2-way running was & that he would 'vomit more in the next 3 months than he has in his life'.

haha..some of your best work deanox.

Putting aside the silliness of the "PhD", I'm all for this.

I love the idea of getting our players mediating. Mental strength, the ability to deal with stress both during the week and on game day, control of anxiety, etc are important skills I hope our players learn. It's a great initiative and super important in an tight industry where mental condition may be the difference between winning a flag and missing finals.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
