Assuming Geelong stick with Conway who's very promising and English signs at the Dogs I can't see a Victorian team where big ROB would be the starting ruck. Maybe the Hawks but they'll stick with Meek/Reeves I'd imagine given they suit their timeline.

So if the rumour is true that he's keen to come back to Victoria to continue his medical degree he'd be signing as a back up somewhere. If he costs nothing in a trade and takes genuine back up ruck money he'd certainly be the easiest solution, but the question is do we invest in a younger option who can take over from Max seamlessly, that's obviously the better solution if possible.

No young rucks take over in 2 years.  Which is why we are going to need a stop gap like ROB.

or, alternatively, gawn is as professional and even better than goldstein and still playing when he's 37

yr a long time retired, and there's no reason to think he can't keep going for a long time yet

100% hope so, but we need a backup. Goldy had Xerri and now has 2 at Ess.

we have nothing else atm.

Gawn has done two knees and gets bashed from piller to post every week. Can't see him running around for us beyond another 2 years.

We definitely need a succession plan at the end of this year, preferably not involving a 2 x AA, soon to be 3 x AA.

Imo Moyle could be a good target

I also want LDU but cant see it being til hes out of contract in 2025. Let’s assume LDU agrees to come end of this season what are you willing to give this year whilst he is still in contract that Nolrth will accept. Unless something crazy happens Nth will get a top of band pick for him if he leaves under FA. So to do it a year early it would need to be more than they expect to get the following year to be in their interests.

If LDU requested a trade at the end of this year, regardless of contract status, I'd hope we do whatever it takes to get him. North wont keep him if he's not 100% buy in.

We have a first rounder this year, next year and in 2026 (assuming multiple years becomes available). We might also get a decent pick for Petty, if his form turns around 🤞, and he wants to leave. Some of these would make it work.

In short, we'll make it happen if he wants to come. Getting him to commit would be the hard part

Old man Goldstein has had a better year than Draper and Wright. Max has not slowed down at all this year and has a lot of good football yet.

Not disputing Gawn slowing down.  As for Goldy he is going fine yes, but Draper is only just coming back from injury and Wright is a Full Forward so not great comparisons.

And its fine for everyone to point at Goldy and say how he is still going etc etc, but he is averaging 10 disposals 2 marks and 24 hit outs per game.  He isn't in the top 15 rucks in the comp.

If we get someone Like a ROB it may enable us to extend Max's career, and have a solid back up if like pretty much all ruckman, Max's body does give up.  This gives us a solid ruck until a Verrel comes on or we find a different ruck.

How good would it be if Max played until he’s 37.
Not sure it’s on the cards though. At the time of his 200th I remember him saying that he wanted to enjoy it as he didn’t think 250 games was very likely.

Our draft strategy is simple; if we still think we are competing for a flag, we will only use 2 picks and use other assets to make the picks as good as possible.

If the club still thinks they are competing for a flag, they are totally deluded and will set us back a decade.

We need to bring in a heap of talent in the 18 - 22 age bracket, and move on a bunch of list clogging 28+ year olds.

absolutely we're still competing for a flag; we might be having a down season, but as long as the core three 30+ year olds - gawn, may, viney - are there, absolutely we should be fighting to win it

we have 15 other 28+ers on our list: melksham, plugger mac, sideshow bob, tomlinson, hunter, mcadam, salem, billings, lever, petracca, brayshaw, anb, langdon, js29, hore

of those, two effectively 'retired' before the 2024 season, six are integral parts of best 23 as it goes, and at least three - milkshake, bob, tomlinson - would be expected to be off our list in 2025 either thru retirement or going to another side

so you want to throw the baby - gawn, may, viney - out with the bathwater?

i don't know what yr advocating for here; the only 28+ers who are 'depth' on our list going forward would be hunter, mcadam, billings, hore, and at least two of those are ooc at the end of 2024 and no guarantee to be on the list

you have got to have depth on yr list in order to continue to get better and ALLOW the kids to develop without pressure to perform

after all, how did stripmining our senior depth go for us last time? pretty miserably from memory, and those equivalent three - white, yze, junior mac - were nowhere near as good as our current core senior citizens

Ash Johnson would be a nice addition on a cheap trade deal, out of favour at the Pies

Moyle would be a great pickup

Joel Jeffrey maybe available if the Suns take D Rioli

Big fan of Joel Jeffrey, would bring some much needed pace.

They also have money to spend (and not many others looking to head to Moorabbin for the cash). Stengle, Higgins & Collard would bring some pizazz to a moribund fwd line. Would be pretty good to crumb to Max King. Can see the appeal for Saints.

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.
