Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Petty back in.

Where do we think he will play?

Will he be sub?

I think it will be hard. Hopefully Bbb rocks it so it would be hard to take him off.

Maybe he'll play down back.

Tough call if Tmac has another good game.

Just glad he's fit.

A couple of weeks ago we were missing three talls.

What if someone gets injured in the first minute? That's a full game for Petty whether he's sub or not.

I obviously don't know his fitness levels or how his injuries are tracking but this all feels rushed and sketchy to me.

I wouldn’t have picked him. What we saw with Spargo in OR is what I’m concerned we’ll see this week, and that’s before you consider tall/run balance (we either drop a runner for a tall or we play a tall as sub which IMO isn’t a good idea).

Ok, I'm trying to make some sort of sense of the Baffling Selection of the Week. Not easy as an outsider looking in.

Big Question is "How many cheese boards did they go through making this decision?" Gotta be three at least.

Maybe they will sub him into the game at 3/4 time and also give him a run at Casey the following day for a half. They may 'Schach' him and have him on the pine for the whole game.

FIIK.

Not a good selection

Assuming he's a sub he either comes on early due to injury and he's underdone or he comes on for the last quarter in which case it doesn't give him match practice.

Reminds me of Salem's early return in 2022

They could of course do a reverse sub with him playing the first half and BBB the second

Very strange

Well I’m happy with Pett’s selection. Why?  Because it will get some (senior level) miles into his legs, and we’ll win either way!

Provided we have no injuries, I reckon Petty gets subbed out rather than subbed in.

Windsor to start as sub to ease him into league footy.

I was hoping we would’ve given Petty a full game at Casey this weekend given  the recent Spargo debacle. Perhaps he was under instruction not to go full rat power last week??

Presume Petty will be sub. Maybe the thinking is 1.5 qtrs is more useful to find form and get miles in the legs than a full VFL practise match?

Agree.

Brown starts, swaps mid way through the third with Petts.

Good management of both players.

The risk is if we get a ln injury to a small or a runner, but if petty is fit enough to be a sub he's fit enough to come on when needed.

He can play back or forward, so they can shuffle players.

And if a medium or tall, at either end, has to come off he's the perfect sub.

Good call, worth the risk of being down a runner, to get him up to AFL speed.

And goody was good to his word about petts coming back round 2.

But, who knows goody might start him and say have windsor as the sub as part of managing his program and making sure we don't burn him out (he's played all of the 4 games thus far).

Yeh nah.  There's an old saying.... don't flirt with 'WINNING' form.

Absolutely zero case for Petty to be anywhere near the G this week, even as sub.

Was a mile off the pace at the Casey praccy apparently.

Just give him another half to three quarters to try & find some touch at Casey vs the Hawks plus bringing him up to some decent match fitness before throwing him in the deep end.

This would also allow the sports science guys and doc to monitor how he pulls up each quarter with no pressure to continue on at the lower level if there's any minor issues.

Cotton wool and scans/review again during the week. Hie's an important cog for us and we need him there at the pointy end.

Would have made no change and brought Joey on a little earlier than we did against the Dogs to see where he's at and try and instil some confidence before another stint at Casey depending on how he went.

Having said that we should still be in a strong position to post a solid W here if we can hold our form against the dogs.

I can see your point too DD. The four points still most important but it seems in recent years clubs don't value the 'find form in the 2s' model we were used to in the 90s.

Yeah all a bit perplexing! Petty is so valuable to the team you may as well take your time. Three weeks ago he was limping around Gosches like a 70 year old! BBB and TMac both did a good job last week. We don't need to take a risk.

Welcome back Petts.

Maybe Hore the sub.

I can only see Petty being the sub. He’s barely match fit, so I’d guess they’ll want to use him as an impact player where he can run hard for half (or less) of a game.

Good to see him back though!

last week's selections were heavily criticised. As it transpired they worked out well.

maybe the FD know what they are doing and we should back them in. If they reckon is good to go then get him in is my view. no point in waiting.

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
