Yep, Carlton are trilled to have snuck a couple of wins early with multiple absolute top-tier players out.

The importance of Harry McKay being not only in form but also kicking straight (6.1 in two games) cannot be understated and the inclusion of Weitering, Walsh, Martin and Motlop will leave them with basically no weak part of the ground.

Round nine should be a ripper - touch wood both teams are close to full strength by then and we can get an interesting grand final preview.

The year we won it Stephen May missed 3 weeks (we got lucky with the Richmond game meaning it was only 3 games when he actually missed 4 weeks) with a fractured eye socket after Tom Hawkins threw his elbow back in his face. 

We then lost our other form key back, Adam Tomlinson to an ACL against North when he was in career best form and had locked down the third KPD the week Maysie was ready to come back, with his replacement, young Harrison Petty causing much hand wringing at first. 
 

We were also without our then two first choice forwards Brown and Weideman for most of the first 10 weeks with injury with their replacements, TMac and a young Luke Jackson, surprising everyone by taking it by storm. 
 

We have our injury challenges this year, exacerbated by the loss of Brayshaw and Smith, but our premiership year also had its challenges and this current situation may just enable us to find a new setup that makes us even better. Fingers crossed.

The problem with losing either of May/Lever is that they are our generals in defence. It's like having an on-field coach.

The problem with losing both of them is we also lose the on-field coach aspect. We're not exactly back in Frost/Oscar territory, but the cohesiveness our of defence relies on having at least one of them on the ground.

Wouldn’t rush either of them. Probably be cautious this week, set Lever for Adelaide and May for Brisbane. 
We can beat Port with TMAC, Petty and Hore.

This is exactly the point I will be making on the podcast. I have no doubt we can cover the positions albeit not to the exact same levels with May and Lever in the team. What we can't replace is the coaching on the field, the talk and positioning etc.

Almost a year to the day of sweating on Max's knee scans we receive some more post Rd 2 lady luck. 

No doctor but 2 cracked ribs and a crack in the tranverse process sounds a hell of a lot better than 3 broken ribs and a crack in the vertabrae.

Also a slice of luck with Rick as it sounds like some kneecap bruising. Sure didn't look like it at first 😄

Anyone know much about the "transverse process fracture"...it sounds very serious but they don't seem too concerned???

“Steven was obviously in a lot of pain following that heavy contact in the second quarter of Saturday’s game, so we sent him off to hospital for some scans,” Richardson said.

“The results of these showed two fractures to his ribs, and a small transverse process fracture.

“At this stage, Steven will miss this week’s match against Port Adelaide. We will continue to monitor his pain and function following that, in the lead up to our Round 4 game.”

Fellow defender Jake Lever also sat out the majority of the second half, hindered with a knee concern.

The 28-year-old underwent scans on Sunday, which ruled out any significant structural damage.

“Pleasingly, Jake has been cleared of major injury to his right knee. He, instead, looks to have irritated a joint under his kneecap,” Richardson said.

“We will see how he responds this week at training, but we are optimistic he will be available for Saturday night’s game in Adelaide.”

Melbourne will now prepare to face Port Adelaide in five days’ time, for the first of two back-to-back games at Adelaide Oval.

Salem was moved to the backline immediately once May came off not because he’s a like for like, but because he helps with leadership and direction. I suggest the same will happen this week.

No two injuries are the same.  Remember Lockdown Dan was in a brace for months.  Other can fracture transverse processes and hardly notice it.

Jane, that would not have been an enjoyable 6 months. While all injuries are different it is often the case with back injuries that muscular imbalances and dysfunctional movement patterns become the main issue after the initial acute injury.  The physios will make sure that Maysie is keeping his trunk mobile and exercising with a level that is tolerable so that he is ready to play.

While I'm sure he will be in pain the players and club medicos understand that pain is just feedback and nothing to worry about. This is a problem I see with general medicine that doctors tell civilians to avoid pain and prescribe pain medication rather than work through it in a sensible manner.

As they say in the classics….’it ain’t nuthin’. Is a small bony projection off the side of the back of the vertebra that functions as a muscle attachment. The kind of thing that plenty of players in the past would crack from an impact injury, and if not scanned/xrayed (this happened a lot in the past), would just be put down to bruising. When it feels ok, play as able.

Salem played the whole game in defence. Petty was moved back when Lever went off.

They used to open for Spinal Tap. They gave up when they found their material had been plagiarised, uncredited, by Bon Jovi. The guitarist now works delivering school lunches and the drummer is a plasterer. They're talking about getting the band back together. Their new material is really strong, apparently!

Webber, is it just semantics on words “cracked and fractured” or medically, are they quite different when discussing rib injuries?

Whatever, I see May missing both Adelaide games and then the Lions and with the bye, he would have a 5 week recovery.

That is the non medical assessment of course.

Non Medical but seems the most sensible to me as well.  There is a short turn around to the Adelaide game and then why not rest him for Brisbane coupled with the bye just to make sure.

Semantics, Redleg. Crack is more commonly used when referring to a fracture that doesn’t go ‘through’ the bone entire or is ‘undisplaced’. In other words, if you didn’t see the fracture ‘line’, you wouldn’t know the bone is broken. A ‘displaced’ fracture, of which there’s a spectrum of severity, means the bone is not aligned as ‘normal’ either side of the crack/s. Jeremy Howe’s arm last year was a displaced fracture. Very. Nobody’s calling that a crack. 
As to Maysie’s return, the issue will be pain. Playing won’t make the situation worse. The contrary situation to this would be if someone had a crack in their navicular bone (arch, or midfoot), which is a vital weight-bearing, structural bone. Crack might be there on imaging, but without pain. No way that player plays until the crack is fully resolved, regardless of pain. Reason being that the crack can turn into a bigger crack, and career over. Not the case with ribs, or transverse process.

He actually only missed one game from that incident, and he would have had to miss it anyway due to concussion protocols. Also famously played the GF with a 12-week hamstring tear, if he misses just one with his latest injury then the guy is just made differently. Good result for us though!

Credit to Goody for getting Tmac , Bbb and Petty up and about.

Petty will go back and help Tmac.

I imagine Tommo will get another game either as sub or to allow Petty to swing fwd.

In any case we have done well. There is a lot of luck on footy. And we haven't had a great deal of it.

May has been in great form and a huge loss.

Imagine if Tmac and Petty were still injured.

What with smith and Gus we have a lot of players out.

I thought Tmac was quite good again and Petty was moving better than expected.
