Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Only thing is Bassett was responsible for the backs and forwards at various times at Port. Both ends of the ground have been hugely flakey over his tenure. I know we were previously interested, but I'd say it's unlikely now given his track record at Port.

Going to have to pull you up a little bit here Adam, although will concede Port have been erratic over the journey. By the second year of each of his stints coaching down back and up front, Basset’s division had established itself as a top two AFL performer on points conceded or scored; Port conceding the second lowest total in 2017 (and the third lowest in 2018 despite the club finishing 10th overall), and becoming the heaviest scoring team in 2020.

While we know that personnel, injuries and the defensive/offensive balance of the head coach’s game-plan can impact such figures, the Power in the respective years prior to Basset taking on each of those challenges sat as the 10th worst defensive team in 2015 and the league’s 12th lowest-scoring team in 2018. So he has effectively twice during his career achieved jumps of eight to twelve ranking spots within two years of taking over, at both ends of the ground.

Why those form-lines later dipped is anyone’s guess (although on the defensive side it could have had something to do with the departure of Darren Burgess), but the stats alone suggest Basset does have some innovative nous. I also have no idea about their personal relationship, but Goodwin and Basset have pretty compelling connections (and Goody apparently helped lure Nathan to Essendon under Neil Craig). He also seems like a straight-up good guy.

Serious question Jimmy, why not?

I have zero idea about Jordie’s coaching ability, but it was widely believed that he was the hardest worker in training  - not the most skilled player but never say die type who I wouldn’t dismiss out of hand.
Surely being a great player doesn’t necessarily make you e great coach, (Hird, Buckley, Voss #1) and vice versa. Jordie could inspire by his work ethic but who actually knows?

I think it is pretty clear that the best coaches were not naturally gifted players, but were players who had to work hard to improve and know what it takes - eg Sheedy, Hardwick, Mark Thompson, Clarkson, Northey etc etc

Um, Thompson and Northey 'not naturally gifted players? Not sure about that. But I'm only nit-picking in a banterish way. Just call me The Little Red Rooster - oh, that's right them's Bantams...

It seems like Luke Beveridge and the Western Bulldogs are super keen on Stuart Dew.

As can be seen in this article: https://www.afl.com.au/aflw/video/1043405/a-behind-the-scenes-look-at-the-dogs-new-look-fortress?videoId=1043405&modal=true&type=video&publishFrom=1695931200001&tagNames=AppNewsFeed:Yes

As for who is joining the Demons coaching panel to replace Adem Yze?  It definitely looks like Andrew McQualter is moving on to another AFL Club. St. Kilda were interested, according to Ross Lyon, but they said that they cannot afford him under their coaching soft cap.

At least that's what it says in this particular article: https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/afl-2023-ross-lyon-andrew-mcqualter-coaching-position-where-will-he-go-missing-richmond-tigers-job-to-adem-yze-latest/news-story/5a1b39001ef76d8eccd755980545404d

They had a head start on other clubs... really need a quality coach that can feed new ideas into Goodwin's head.

At issue is that we are in effect possibly in need of another head coach (type)

Yze sitting in the stands with Goodwin on the bench points to an assistant like Yze would be making a lot of moves (or not) Maybe a lot of those moves are pre-planned but nonetheless, the type of assistant we might require isn't your normal run of the mill assistant

Or, we might revert to Goodwin back up in the stands if we go down another path (a new, midfield coach being just that, a midfield coach only)

It's all a bit vague though as we don't know how much responsibility Yze actually had

I'd be surprised if st kilda can afford a year 10 work experience kid in the soft cap with Ross' likely wage 😅

This seems like it’s made for McQualter, very influential at Tiges over their successful years, was interim head coach this year and went close to landing the role permanently.

He’s clearly well above a regular assistant

Yes but the Tigers passed on him as their future head coach so he might have his limitations

And there are quite a few head coaches that are on the boundary now so we may be looking at all the chief assistants that are upstairs

So how many head coaches are boundary-side now?

Barassi and Blight are certainly exceptions. Voss might become one, although he has been given an extraordinary list to work with. Northey isn't; if you look back at what is said about him it is that he was a tremendous tackler.

'A Derrinallum recruit, the lightly framed Northey was a fleetfooted runner and earned the "swooper" nickname by his ability to get the ball and pass it on to a teammate. He played 118 games and kicked 192 goals for Richmond from 1963 until 1970. He also was a member of Richmond's 1967 and 1969 premiership teams.'

Not a bad track record as a player...I watched him play a few times: he always looked dangerous...in a 'Footy Act' kind of way, i.e.skills etc

There are some things the AFL are doing currently that are travesties. Chief among them is the shredded soft cap. There is absolutely no reason not to have reinstated it to pre Covid levels. Coaches have to be the hardest working people in the AFL with massive workloads at the best of times. To not have reinstated the soft cap levels is an absolute shocker.  We should be in a position to appoint a midfield coach as well as an Yze overall senior assistant role and more.

Yze was one of the highest paid assistants in the industry so $$ shouldn't be an issue in going after whoever we want for his replacement but it still leaves a skeleton coaching dept compared to pre covid.

The "bring in some fresh ideas" argument seems to have been one of the deciding factors.

More to the point is that there is more than one senior assistant type that we could look at ... or perhaps we will look at someone who is just an assistant that might be able to step up into the Yze role.  Could it be someone from within like Chaplin?

But again, how much influence and responsibility do these senior assistants have elsewhere?  (the ones where the head coach is boundary-side)

Our club itself may well know but what do we know?

The appointment may well be an extremely important one as he'll be very likely the right-hand man to Goodwin (unless we go down a different path with Goodwin upstairs again)

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f

It's Game Day and the Demons once again open the round of football with their annual clash against Richmond on ANZAC Eve. The Tigers, coached by former Dees champion and Premiership assistant coach Adem Yze have a plethora of stars missing due to injury but beware the wounded Tiger. The Dees will have to be switched on tonight. A win will keep them in the hunt for the Top 4 whilst a loss could see them fall out of the 8 for the first time since 2020.

There’s a touch of irony in the fact that Adem Yze played his first game for Melbourne in Round 13, 1995 against the club he now coaches. For that game, he wore the number 44 guernsey and got six touches in a game the team won by 11 points.  The man whose first name was often misspelled, soon changed to the number 13 and it turned out lucky for him. He became a highly revered Demon with a record of 271 games during which his presence was acknowledged by the fans with the chant of “Oozee” wh
