I think we definitely need to look at new line coaches to help Simon Goodwin.

We may, or may not, be losing Adem Yze to Richmond if he successfully obtains the senior coaching role there. If not, he should transfer from midfield coach to forwardline coach at the Demons.

I think Greg Stafford should stick to being just the ruck coach or be moved on. He is no forwardline coach.

Troy Chaplin has been a great backline coach and will probably stay.

Mark "Choco" Williams stays as head of development. In light of now "choking" in finals, we can probably learn a lot from him from when he was coach of Port Adelaide and overcame hardship and struggle to help win the 2004 AFL Premiership. I also think he has been a fantastic development coach for our younger players.

The big question is, who do we bring in? Who should become our new midfield coach? Or new forwardline coach? Do we also need a specific goal kicking coach?

Should we chase Brett Ratten (who quit North Melbourne) but could come back to the Demons as midfield coach after 20 years? Seeing as he was our midfield coach way back in 2004.

Would Nathan Buckley consider coming back to coaching? Could we entice him to become our midfield coach? Unless he is happy being in the media?

Another option could be getting Stuart Dew the former Gold Coast coach at the club? I know he was our original target before we fortunately chose Simon Goodwin as the apprentice to Paul Roos. Would Stuart Dew like a fresh start at the Demons?

Blake Caracella at Essendon might also be someone with a good "football brain" that we need at the Demons to help our midfield or forwardline.

Justin Leppitsch has also been an excellent backline coach at Collingwood. I would definitely be interested in seeing if he wants a new challenge. However, I think he is focused on Collingwood's finals campaign and wishes to be a senior AFL coach again.

What about getting another old and wise head to help out? Gary Ayres? Rodney Eade? John Worsfold?

Another factor is the expansion of our coaching department. Will we have development coaches assisting our line coaches again? I remember before COVID-19 and the restrictions to coaching departments we had Max Rooke at the Demons. Should we look to get recently retired players to help us? Perhaps get Nathan Jones back at the Demons? What about David Neitz or David Schwarz to help out our forwardline? What about Matthew Lloyd or Wayne Carey to assist our forwards?

Anyway, there's a lot a questions to ponder.

We need to get better just like every other AFL will be looking to get better next season.

Hopefully the entire football department has a thorough review to look at what we did wrong and how we can improve for season 2024 and beyond.

kicking clearly an issue. we need changes

Midfield connection and ball movement kicking inside 50 all massive areas of concern. We should look at Yze. does he need support? should he move to another group if this isn’t working? Our midfield is the best in the league we should be getting more benefit and dominating clearances

hard to judge fwd coaches as we don’t have the stock

I don’t want hear about contest and defence next year. We’re way over kilter in our focus on contest and defence. Not just with our game plan but also our list management strategy. All our salary cap is tied up in midfield and defence players.

2024 focus needs to be scoring and ball movement. If we’re not averaging 100pts per game over the last 6 weeks before finals then we’ll see another straight sets exit again.

Funnily enough, stone cold Jennings is doing wonders at GWS this year, while someone like Leppitsch would be an amazing get. I think Stafford and Yze will go this year.

• Adelaide had the best points for to end the home n away season - their forward coach is James rahilly. no idea who he is or if he’s any good….?
• Murray Davis is Brisbanes forward coach, again no idea who he is or if he’s any good….?
• chad Cornes is ports forward coach • Justin Leppitsch - Head of Strategy/Forward Coach at collingwood

or my favourite please Nev Jetta - Development Coach - Forwards at Collingwood

Hoping we get big Stuey Dew in for the mids or forwards. Always played us tough and plays a no nonsense long kicking style (that didn’t work but was fun).

Not sure if he’ll move from NSW but Mark McVeigh did a good job as caretaker of the Giants and is now coaching the Swans academy and Allies under 18’s. He’d bring some fresh ideas.

Skills coach please

Increasingly football is in the corridor. Even our boundary line play relies on skills.

Leveraging weaknesses. Give Lever an easy outlet for example. His up and under kicking is not made for pressure games.

Goal kicking accuracy is 30% mental. Do it at training with earbuds pumping out distraction. Have a plan for 10 players that is variable each match. Left goal post at this angle arc etc. Less thinking and more about execution takes the mind stress away

To be fair i haven't read everything here but with regards to Yze being forward coach if he stays.

Yes it's an upgrade to Stafford imv but tbh he's been out of the modern game as a player for some time.

I'd much rather see a more recent forward come in and show them the ropes / set things up differently in terms of methods, craft and cohesion.

For mine (if he's available) i'd be desperately aiming for Ablett Jnr!

His kicking skills and knowledge of forward craft from both sides (as a small forward and as a mid) would be second to none imho.

If you want to be the best.... get the best!

Brad Miller at the Suns is the obvious choice, been a great forwards coach at GWS before moving to the Suns and I don't think it's the forwards that are the problems at the Suns.

I'd be speaking to a Cotchin, Selwood, or Shuey(if he wants to relocate) in a player development role. No idea what Conca actually does.

Could we get an ex-coach to replace Yze's role? There are options, Buckley, Cameron, Pyke?

I’m all for a refresh on the coaching staff, we need to rejuvenate the club after a pretty somber end to the last two seasons.

I’d be looking at players 3-5 years out of the game or even recently retired.

Cotchin would be a great get, helped change the culture of Richmond with Dimma and played a very selfless role on field. Seems to have great character.

Maybe a Jack Gunston type if he moves back to Melbourne, he’s been involved in very high end forward groups

Stafford should have gone last year. Wouldn’t even keep him as ruck. Max and Grundy didn’t exactly hit to our mids that well this year. I think Max tapped more to Carlton’s advantage than ours on Friday.

Id change midfield coach, forward and ruck.
And agree we need to get coaches with fresh ideas and who value speed on the ball and fluid play.

Need a 2020 style review and some serious change. The current coaches have indulged the players and their success. The lack of disipline in the semi final needs to be a fork in the road. We are stuck with goody and i think mark williams is good for the group. The rest should be turned over.

presuming yze gets the tigs job, dew would be a good replacement

we definitely need a change to bring in new voices and ideas - yze and stafford have been part of the set-up since preseason 2021 while chaplin has been at the club in various roles since 2016

time for a refresh

A few other suggestions for new line coaches would be....

● Daniel Giansiracusa (who is an assistant coach at Essendon)

● Jarrad McVeigh (who is an assistant coach at Sydney)

● Josh Carr (who is an assistant coach at Port Adelaide)

● Nigel Lappin (who is an assistant coach at Geelong)

● Matthew Knights (who is an assistant coach at West Coast)

● Andrew McQualter (who is currently Richmond's interim coach and may wish to have a fresh start if he misses out on the senior AFL coaching role in 2024)

● Jaymie Graham (who is an assistant coach at Fremantle)

● Ben Rutten (who is an assistant coach at Richmond and a former team mate of Simon Goodwin)

Anyway, that's plenty of other possible assistant coaching options.

Ask yourselves this question.

What good is it really changing all the line coaches ( though of itself not a bad move ) if the guy devising " the plan" is the same ?

Defence is good..  could still use refinement

Without doubt the forward 'whatever' is dysfunctional at best or simply shambolic.  Needs major work.

The midfield..  we have talent but it's not the clearance machine it ought to be

All that aside if we maintain our current style.. it'll be same same

The thinking of ol' S.S. Simon has to change otherwise changing coaches is just deckchairs...

Let's  hope we get a vastly better output from the F.D . In 24 we're going nowhere

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
