The incident had nothing to do with us losing the game. It's a separate issue. We lost because we didn't make the most of our chances.

He was knocked out for a full 2 minutes. 2 minutes is a long time for someone to be knocked out.

This is a guy with extensive concussion history, is currently undergoing a brain scan and will be taking time out to think about his future over the off season as quoted by his Hamish Brayshaw last night. 

That says enough to me that we won't see Angus at all this year. 

His health is absolutely priority and I'd be incredibly surprised if he is ticked off to play again this year.

As to losing Gus and losing the game I'm not so sure.

Yes we kicked at goal poorly and bombed it in.

But a I reckon Gus in the team is at least seven points more than Laurie.

Diamond Jim, re whether Brayshaw will be available to return to the side after the 12 day protocol, misses the prelim or GF (assuming we win upcoming games), and assuming he is medically cleared to play will be a decision for Gus and his family supported by medical advice. As supporters we do not have the medical expertise nor access to his medical records and expert advice to have any valid opinion on whether or when Brayshaw should play. Nor do we have any real insight into his personal circumstances or motivations to gauge whether any medical risks (which we no knowledge) are worth taking.

Leaving aside the very real impacts you've noted (I mean our worst cp diff in a quarter since round 8 in the first quarter of a QF for the number one cp team in the AFL? - please) the bottom line is we lost one of our best 5 players in the last six games on player ratings, and a key part of our midfield, for nearly an entire match.

A player who averages aprox 90% TOG, top 5 for possessions and top 5 for pressure acts out for an entire match and replaced by a sub who only played 50% TOG, played no time on ball and could only manage 5 possessions for an entire match.

Of course we could have, should have won. Shows how good we are. Just needed to kick straight.

But I mean how could that not impact the result? It's old school nonsense to suggest otherwise.

They were slight favorites to win that game at 1.86. Some bookmakers have in game betting.

After Gus went down (noting we scored a goal and so the pies lead was only 6 points) the pies would have come into something like 1.40 prohibitive favourites to win. We would have blown our to 3.00 outsiders.

Thought experiment.

Let's say coming into the game you knew that Gus was going to do a hammy at the 3 min mark of the first quarter (meaning none of the emotion or psychological impact of the head trauma).

Would the consensus be that we have less chance of beating a very evenly matched opponent? Or that it likely would make no difference to the outcome?

Or alternatively, you know the pies are going to lose Adams after only 3 minutes.

Would the consensus be that we have a greater chance of beating the pies? 

Of course it would.

This is all true. It's logical and quantifiable. What we can't measure is the psychological impact Gus going down had on his team-mates. I know I personally, am really struggling to focus on this week's game, even now. At the game on Thursday, it was always front of mind for me, and I'm just a supporter. 

The players saw one of their best mates, one with a dangerous history of head trauma, knocked unconscious before their eyes. This was not a knee or a hammy, but at the time a potentially career ending, even life threatening event. We still don't know his future. This team is tight, it had to have affected each and every player and coach. 

Realistically, the circus around Maynard has to be emotionally draining on them, try as they will to shut it out. Because someone wears a football guernsey once a week, they are expected by many not to be affected by 'distractions'. That is not reality - thankfully. 

I will be there Friday, hoping like hell that we kick a^se. But if we don't, I will understand and will be proud of them.

Our social media pages are getting harassed and bullied by the Collingwood fans everywhere at the minute. We put a post up saying the game's sold out and Pies supporters going to town on the fact we're just a small club and it's all Carlton.

I know it's just outside noise, but geez it'd be good if we could win on Friday to shut those ferals up.

I also don't think Gus will play again this year. I will be frankly shocked if his family isn't working hard to convince him to hang up the boots, regardless of what his scans will show.

An impossible choice for a guy in the prime of his career, playing in a successful team, with 4 years left on a lucrative contract.

Whatever decision Gus makes, it will be far bigger than winning or losing a game, or a final, or even a premiership. I have no doubt the club and our fans will support his decision and back him in 100%. 

Football is a season of life, but it's not your whole life.

It's a personal choice, and might not even be a realistic one depending on his symptoms and the scan. Another 3-5 years of knocks and potential concussions are not worth the risk but to me 3 weeks and out is worth it.

The fact he's already running a day after his brain scan and 5 days after the incident is positive for sure.

If he plays again it’s a big risk. A final or grand final, it doesn’t matter. He won’t be immune from sustaining another concussion, and the next one might be the one that causes permanent damage. 
Is that a risk you’d want your child to take? Even for premiership glory? 

Concussion doesn’t discriminate because you’re playing in a grand final. His risk of getting a head high hit in the next month are the same as getting a hit in 2024 or 2026. This is his first concussion in 6 years. His next one may never come, or it might happen 6 minutes into a prelim final.

Everyone should read this article about Spencer Fisher, former mma fighter, describing his rise and fall dealing with concussion and CTE. Being mma it seem far removed from football, but not so far when you think of Spud Frawley and Jeff White. 

“He’d just kind of black out and have, like, a slight convulsion,” she says. “It wasn’t epilepsy, but it was a convulsion. I’ve seen him do it a couple of times, where his eyes are open...” She freezes her face and flutters her eyes. “Just kind of, gone. I just sit there and shake him to get him to come back, and he always starts sweating afterward.”

My understanding is scans are protocol for concussion cases.

It’s not the reason we lost but it definitely factored into that poor 1st quarter, which in the end did make a difference. Now the larger reason was what you mentioned, but let’s not overlook the obvious that it did impact the players and for a game decided by 7 points, it made a difference.

From the discussions being had it sounds like the club is going to put him through the 12 days, and if he gets the all clear and he is keen (which is sounds like he is) will be in for the prelim.

Why would Gus go on now, if he was part of my family I would be talking him out of playing again, The AFL have just made it crystal clear that they will not protect him in the future, after 6 concussions I would rather not have my brain turned to mush by the time I’m 50
