We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

The 2023 Draft and Trade Targets Thread

Unless they see this as their Hawthorn end of 2022 moment or MFC 2010(?). A chance to improve their list with draft picks, so deliberately maim themselves to unearth players on their list and then finish so low, they'd be in line for top 5 picks before Tassie come in. Otherwise, they're in huge strife I reckon.

That would be the smart strategy for Richmond. They are in the death zone if they erroneously believe they can still contend and end up hanging around mid ladder for the next two seasons. Bottoming out is a must for them now with Tasmania coming in. They won their three flags now need to take their medicine, like the Hawks are doing.

I’d be surprised if we don’t use a top 30 pick on a midfielder this year given we’ll likely take 3 or more picks in that range.

But Im also not too worried by depth at the moment. If Gus needs time away then that changes things but we can wait until at least the trade period to know more about that.

I can see a promotion of some of our maturing players to the level of playing 5-10+ games a year.

Laurie - Dunstan
Taj - JJ
Howes - Harmes

And then a fresh wave of kids coming in behind those guys to have a taste of afl footy if they are ready.

I also like those three, Howes hasn't played any midfield though.  Although i do expect Rivers to be more of a midfielder next year.

i think we will have a top 6 midfielder from the draft which will help too

I like the look of the below draftees...

Coby McKercher (Mid)

Zane Dursma (Mid/Fwd)

Connor O’Sullivan (Def)

Mitchell Edwards (Ruck/Fwd)

Logan Morris(Fwd)

We should be getting Kynan Brown (Father Son) this draft??

Why not throw this guy an opportunity to play with his brother :Sam Van Rooyen (Brother of Jacob)

Surprised that Logan Morris is not ranked in the top 30. Has good hands and very good at ground level. Good size at 191 / 90kg.

Logan Morris should be there at pick 24.  Very similar player to JVR and would be handy. I doubt he will be there at our next pick.

Pick 5 O Sullivan

Pick 14 Best Mid

Pick 24 Morris

I think we might offer Grundy and 24 for 11 and 30.

Morris has drifted out to 36 in the latest rankings. I really like him.

He looks the second best aerialist of the key forwards I’ve seen in this crop (behind Walter) but the reality is 191cm isn’t a good size. Really hard to make it as a tall forward that size these days, unless you have the ability to get it done on the lead and the ground like Fritter or really good defensive work ethic.

Jack Carroll has averaged 24 touches at VFL level and can't crack the blues team. We liked him in his draft year. Contracted for next year but may want to move for opportunities. Smooth moving half-back/winger but seems to have been played forward when given his limited afl games.

Yes was set for 2023 and then the Blues recruited Acres and picked up Ollie Hollands. Now is 5th in line and also Blues have Binns. Natural wing player but played out of position.  May not get a look in for 2024.
Lingers and Hunter stay in ‘24 and we have Howes and Woey jnr as future wing types so Carroll wouldn’t get greener pasture at MFC.

If we had any interest, Dees should contact manager but wait for end of 2024 and pickup as an out of contract player on the cheap.

Jackson Hateley delisted by the Crows. Seemed to be a talented youngster in his draft year.  What has happened? Maybe like others he had talent but not a ready spot.  A good league player but on the fringe at AFL level. Not a midfielder and not a forward.  Perhaps he’s like Jordon.  A 23-28 ranked player on the fringes only for depth.

There’s an opportunity cost in pushing hard for silverware in your flag window. Late first round pick is marginally ‘overpaying’ for Lynch (maybe) but would you be lamenting it if it was the move that brought home a second premiership with this group? No.

Jefferson for ‘peanuts’ is not what I suggested. It was 13, 22 & Jefferson for pick 7. Maybe a third rounder coming back our way. There’s also an opportunity cost in gaining access to the absolute best talent in the draft.

Jefferson is a speculative tall at this stage. Some ability there but reality is he’s probably only a 50/50 chance to impact at AFL senior level. That’s just the way it is with young KPP’s. He certainly hasn’t yet shown the AFL ready attributes Van Rooyen has.

Not every recruit is as gung ho as JVR. He is the gold standard and should force all our recruits to be top trainers and pre season prep stars.

Jeffo is a completely different style of player to JVR snd as-such  his development is/will be different. But he will be guided by the Club and let's just be patient for results. All the doomsayers are opening their mouths about MJ but he has ability and we should see it evolve at some stage perhaps later in 2024.

Its hard to bottom out now with so many Academy and FS early picks. GC have potentially up to 4 elite under 16's coming through to under 18's next year and eligible for the draft in 2025. Kaliani White is one of them and he will join us - and rightfully so.

On top of that we have had compensation to North last year and maybe this year.  WCE in the next year or 2? Then we have gun Tassy kids coming through may move to Tassy when they come in. AFL will tear up contracts.

Its a fine mess the AFL are getting clubs into (mainly Vic clubs). Our current guns will be into their 30's (31/32/33) by the time we see Tassy drafts coming in. So we need to start bringing in elite juniors now.

I don’t know that JVR is the ‘gold standard’. He’s just ‘the standard’ required to make it at AFL level, or at least have a chance of making it. Keep in mind JVR is still far from the finished product and nowhere near definable as having ‘made it’. He had a very promising debut season. That’s where we’re at with him so far.

Jefferson is a complete unknown at this stage. He’s got pedigree as a draft pick in the 10 - 20 range but by all reports his first year at Casey was pretty underwhelming. Got no issues with being patient with him but things change, trade opportunities come up and maybe his name pops up as a suggestion in our pursuit of other interests. Who knows. He’s certainly not an untouchable commodity.

Cal all but confirmed on Gettable that North will get pick 3 as compo,  pick 11 and future end of first pick as a hand out.

Won’t get access to Sanders

That is massive over compensation for a team with possibly the best young midfield in the league already. They just need time for their kids to come on. If that compo is accurate, it basically ruins the first round of this this years draft and I'd be hoping we trade out into future if possible, as our picks after 5 (which becomes 7) become weak.

How is his tank, speed, defensive pressure and how is his kicking? Is there a chance he can debut on the half forward line use athleticism to be hit up on a wing/running back into f50 space at some point next year after the bye? Think of a young and skinny Hipwood, although 8cm shorter. Hipwood played 10 games in his 2nd year and then 20 in his 3rd, kicking 11 and 30 respectively.

Last year Geelong were given Pick 7 for taking on Jack Bowes and his $800k salary.

Why aren’t we demanding Richmond’s first round pick for taking Lynch and his salary off their books?
Doing them a favour.

Or is that type of move restricted to “certain” clubs only?

All that death riding of Freo now just seems a waste purely with North compensation.

Absolute joke.

Didn't realise McKay had turned into Steven Silvagni ll of a sudden.

Essendon and Hawthorn in an auction for him.  They still hate each other and there aren't any other KPBs left in the market.

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f

There’s a touch of irony in the fact that Adem Yze played his first game for Melbourne in Round 13, 1995 against the club he now coaches. For that game, he wore the number 44 guernsey and got six touches in a game the team won by 11 points.  The man whose first name was often misspelled, soon changed to the number 13 and it turned out lucky for him. He became a highly revered Demon with a record of 271 games during which his presence was acknowledged by the fans with the chant of “Oozee” wh
