Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Not completely correct. It was what is wrong at Melb, how bad we are, and bruise free, and no one will go there, etc etc, ad nauseum.

Of course they're going to lay the boots in when you're putrid but go back and watch any hint of an upset and they blow the front of their pants.

There were times in yesterdays coverage where the footy wasn’t in-shot so I took the intermittent replays as part of the overall [censored]-ness of the broadcast.  Clearly the AFL don’t put any quality standard conditions into the broadcast rights contracts because what’s being dished up by Fox for the 2nd & 3rd tiers games is complete trash.

What did annoy me was the ridiculous discussion around the JVR contest. It was clumsy and a free kick was rightly paid. That the commentary team then spent the injury time looking for controversy was extremely irritating.  The media & their need to inflate stories is what I find exhausting about footy.

Fox's coverage of interstate games isn't great because they're not at the game. David King's attempted defence of that a few weeks back was limp AF.

They don't have full coverage of the ground. They can't see and therefore can't comment on things that aren't caught by the camera in front of them, hence they missed King's shove of Petty to give us the Gawn goal.

They also are at the mercy of cameras to go look at things off the ball.

So it's no surprise they don't give good or accurate reflections of what is going on.

I've already posted in the post-game thread that there were some bad umpiring decisions against us in the fourth quarter alone, let alone earlier, that have been overshadowed by the Chol non-call. Anderson not being called for HTB when he tried stepping around JVR, got caught and failed to handball was IMO as egregious as the Chol non-call, but anyway.

They just reported on fox footy that JVR is certain to face the tribunal on Tuesday, but has any charge been laid or anything official as yet?

Definitely the Kayo / Fox commentators especially Dunstall was barracking for the Suns.  Agree the replays highlighted our frees and issues.  I think given the 5 minutes stoppage for Ballard meant multiple replays.  Btw Chol should also be referred as a MRO incident.  Lucky Bowey wasn’t concussed and fell on his shoulder.

There is no way JVR will be suspended for his attempted spoil. He shouldn't even be reported but I can appreciate they may want to have a close look at it given Ballard went off on a stretcher.

Damian Barrett is an absolute idi-t.

He said on the Sunday Footy Show this morning, after Cornes, Stevie J and Nathan Brown with TJ also agreeing, said that JVR has absolutely nothing to worry about for a football act, Barrett said you can do something legal and still be In trouble and suspended and that he will get a week.

Am I missing something, or is he a moron?

Is football now ballet?

Well he probably is a moron, but you are missing the fact that the AFL doesn't worry about reality, but how it will look.

I used to do a bit of work with Ballet dancers. Their feet would bleed in agony everyday, and they have to show up tomorrow and do it all again. Most of them are forced to retire by the time they are mid 20’s, and life changing ankle and knee injuries are incredibly common (very similar knee and ankle injuries to footballers). On top of all that it is one of the most toxic cultures in terms of body image and competitiveness.

In terms of effort, endurance and dedication it’s a brutal thing to do.

Yes it’s insane how Barrett hates the Dees and how reveals each week that he hates most teams (except his favoured Kangas). He’s a f@$&))&(t

Everyone loves a conspiracy theory.

With Dunstall and Derwayne openly barracking for the Suns, it was interesting that every time they said there should have been a Suns free or an incorrect free was paid to the Dees, the incident was replayed a couple of times and dissected by the commentators.

However, contentious frees and goals paid to the Suns were totally ignored and no replay to show the incident/decision was seen.

I had absolutely no idea why several frees and resultant goal decisions were paid to the Suns.

How does this happen repeatedly in a game that is so heavily televised with multiple cameras?

How many times was the JVR spoil on  Ballard repeated?

It seemed to be extremely selective vision and replays.

Just a bit of fun for post game discussion, easier of course when you win.

The AFL has its hand firmly up the backsides of the broadcasters more so on 7 & Sen.

You’ll never hear negative commentary about a decision on 7 and they will straight away be sympathetic to a player concussed regardless of it being a football act or not.

My theory is they protect their favourites. Dangerfield, Cripps etc. How Cripps got off last year for an action far worse than JVR’s yesterday is case and point!

The only logical conclusion is that they are trying to protect the umpires.

I can’t recall any criticism of Umpires by TV commentators this year.

Rarely see close-up vision of them nor are they referred to by name.

Fair chance Fox and Seven are under instructions, negotiated as part of the rights.

Yeah spot on. Said the same on the postgame thread. Honestly, it’s so obvious. Also, the media now out for JVR, for what? A spoiling attempt? There are two camps here though. The rational one lead by Jonathan Brown, and the outraged morons led by Ralph, Purple and Jay Clark. Imagine calling for 3 weeks for that! It all started with Dunstall and Derwayne though, who wrote the entire narrative of last night’s game. They crucified him. Made up a story about his eyes not being on the ball. It’s very alarming.

It felt like between what I was watching and what was being discussed by commentators that I was a victim of some serious gaslighting last night. It was the hardest commentary to sit through I can remember. They didn’t show replays of a number of dubious free kicks to gold coast. Neglected to notice any that should have gone our way. When dunstall said we had the rub of the green I wanted to scream.

at one point in the 2nd or 3rd I had the thought that we aren’t a big enough club to be so good and the afl don’t want us to be where we are. This I know is well and truly too far into the conspiratorial, but i had the thought. Between the Richmond game and last night I had had enough.

the nba has had it brought to light that refs were manipulating games. They used one ref as a scapegoat but he admitted later that he definitely wasn’t the only one. NBA players know it happens. It has been discussed openly at times. A sport with as much money involved as the afl and its gambling affiliations is without doubt influenced when needed. I have no doubt.

I marvel at people who like to think that talk about umpiring is over the top/biased/unnecessary. Having watched the game for as long as I have both Melbourne games and neutral games it is clear that umpires know how to arrest momentum and create it or at least try to. Doesn’t always work.

David King just moaning on First Crack that the Suns were robbed. Of course, cherry picking a few situations which went against them, selectively ignoring each of the incidents that went against us in the 3rd quarter that led to three Suns goals.

On a positive note, King did say it was the 'best game the Suns have EVER played'. Regardless of the situation, if we won a game against a team that just played their 'best EVER game', that has to be a positive for us!

Mine is I’m sick of Christian always suspending Melbourne players automatically. How JVR gets same weeks as Cripps (and then he gets off) when the opponent is concussed is ridiculous - definitely a conspiracy. Bet we don’t appeal either!

Worst I’ve heard. At one point, King kicked a goal from a free kick after the siren, which wasn’t replayed or discussed.

Then Gawn is lining up after the reversal, and one of them moans, “You hope it’s not a touchy one, given the crucial point of the game.”

Gold Coast kicks the next goal and he cries out, “The footy gods! They deserved that!”

I understand commentators will cheer on the underdogs. But the repeated outcry over decisions against the Suns just felt like they were trying to paint our success as illegitimate.

I know I’m being slightly precious but glad I wasn’t the only one who felt that way.

If you want a conspiracy theory, I’ll go all in…

Clubs should ask the AFL now to tell the broadcasters NEVER to comment on whether an issue is reportable at any stage. By doing so they basically pour pressure on the league to respond.  If they don’t ask them now, a big club (Carlton or Collingwood) will say that the commentators have unduly influenced a report on one of their star players (remember, they don’t get reported in play anymore) and use it to get them off.

I reckon it could happen as soon as this year. I’ll put my tin hat away now.

Completely agree to be honest. See a few posters have laughed at your comment, but in a real court of law, you can’t get a fair hearing of the media has released info that may prejudice a jury. The AFL media definitely influence the MRO and Tribunal.

It didn't last long, ended up a reasonable session weather wise.  Light duties, BBB, rehab Farris-White, Melky, Salem and Spargo, all with private trainers. The Casey Demons have broken the ice for season 2024 with a pulsating come-from-behind victory over Port Melbourne in which it took the lead for the first time at the halfway mark of the final quarter. The game played in mild Autumn conditions in neutral territory at Kinetic Park, Frankston, never reached great heights in standard but it proved gripping in character at the end at the Casey Demons overcame the Borough to win by 15 points after trailing badly early in the second half.  P

The writing was on the wall from the very first bounce of the football. The big men went up, Max Gawn more often than not, decisively won the ruck hit out and invariably a Brisbane Lions onballer either won the battle on the ground or halved the contest and they went at it repeatedly until they finally won out. Melbourne managed the first goal from Alex Neal-Bullen but after that the visitors shut out every area of Demon presence around the ground except in the ruck duels. It was a mauling.
