GC smashed us in the contest - that is our 1wood as the footy losers say. Still got 61 inside 50s… I don’t know, I think we got away with one there. I just hope we can recover, finish off Hawthorn with a quick kill and get ready for a tough month leading up to the bye.

But I am feeling vindicated with my Petty and JVR can’t get it done for us forward in 2023. Keep it going another week but let’s get JVR a few weeks with Brown and see if he can provide a complimentary role.

We must be chasing a tall forward hard in trades, it’s our only glaring immediate hole.

But again, you lose the contest, the forwards are not getting the best service.

We won, but same old story as most games this year.

Poor forward delivery and retention, punctuated by clumsiness and lack of composure in defence at key moments.

Except this time we got smashed in the contest too.

Disappointing games by Fritsch and Pickett - but Viney completely shut down Rowell after quarter time.

We really gotta fix up ground ball at both ends, we're just off the pace and it's killing our potential.

Feels like back half of 2022 again.

smashed in contested possessions but still easily won the inside 50’s

i think our game plan is ok

it was effort and intensity all over the ground where we lost out

We don't win well, and we don't win easily, but we find a way.

Some massive deficiencies to be sorted out in our midfield. Some other deficiencies to be worked out in our F50.

In the last 5 minutes Rivers, Viney and Brayshaw were immense.

Our forward line is a big issue with lacking a  big  tall  marking like Cameron or Hawkins type. Tmac seems gone.

Also when our defence goes south it really does it big time.

I struggled with the voting. Did we over do it belting Nth last round per chance?

Something wasn't right with so many.

It's 4 points and I know we have 6 and 2 but I think many of us feel a little flat.

Right now, Hibberd is a top 5 most important player for us.

May is clearly not fit so he makes up a lot for that.

I look forward to the day he kicks out to the right. So predictable it is a joke

Before tonight it is long time since Fritsch has been held to zero goals in a match.

It was his own fault. Cooked so many chances. It was Fritta of the bad years when he couldn’t kick them to save himself.

I actually didn't mind Pettys game forward tonight. Presents well up the wing and blocks well for team-mates. Would like him to hit the scoreboard of course.

Having said that, he's probably more valuable for us as a defender and think Brown has more forward craft and ability to draw free kicks.

Time for us to have Brown forward and Petty as the third tall defender I think.

Hunter’s cooked and Grundy’s a headless chook so there goes our recruits from last year.

Fritsch needs a wake up call.

Chandler’s struggling with his leg, had no explosiveness in the second half.

I thought Oliver had left behind these shocker games in 2020 but he’s had a few this year now.

May and Lever madness bubbling along. Petty could help but he gives no offensive drive and that’s how the ball gets stuck at the wrong end. Disco was really coming in to the game late in the 3rd with some intercept marks, not sure they subbed the right guy.

When a team turns up the pressure and speed and we can’t get the backline set we’re coughing up goals.

And our ball movement just becomes gimmicky or bombing because too few of our players make quick accurate decisions.

Casboult is an experienced physically mature forward must have 15kg+, strength and height on Turner. Sold the poor bloke to the wolves. Whoever decided on that match up should severely self-flagellate themselves behind the shelter shed. Absolute Howler! The penny did belatedly drop, Petty went back and can stay there. Maysie needs help. Desperately.

I don’t know what’s wrong with May this year , but he just seems to be going through the motions , or carrying an injury perhaps?

He stays in because there is nobody else. I hope he's not suspended.  Shouldn't be but hey that's never stopped them.

Tell me you're joking. Amazing.

-6 clearances, -27 contested possessions, -25 points from stoppage.
Noah Anderson 22 years of age, Rowell 21.
By any football metric that is a midfield smashing and they are on average 5-6 years younger than us, so yes, we got smashed by an inexperienced midfield. Trac said as much after the game. Our mids will be super flat with that performance.

Gold Coast are the last team to beat Geelong, who have been absolutely dominating teams since.  The Suns are a very good team, especially at home. They had some important players out as well.  We probably didn't deserve to win but we did.  On such results seasons are often built.  Gawn and Viney played like the leaders they are and that was the difference in the end, along with Brayshaw putting his body on the line multiple times.

The Suns will win a lot of games at home and against very good opposition. Fritsch will not play that badly again.  Time for Brown to come back and we desperately need Hibberd to play as many games as possible.  I think Harmes might be due a full game too.

I’d much rather Brown, McDonald or Smith forward than Petty.

Especially when May isn’t fit and Hibberd is out and the backline needs Petty.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
