Great question.  When discussing possible sanctions for Merrett in the media, delayed onset concussion was mentioned , but it wasn't made clear if that was true or just speculation.

Yes, I thought I saw it mentioned in an article and that it was stated in our medical report.

The club, with all the information they were privvy to,  made judgement calls that the sore and struggling players they selected were better options late in the season than the possibly fully fit players from Casey.  It takes extraordinary arrogance to conclude those judgement calls were 100% incorrect.

The problem is that a number of our players have history of declaring themselves right to play when they are clearly not. Most recently Hibberd and Lever against West Coast and Brown against Sydney are examples of players who have subsequently missed games by trying to play through injury.

Viney and Gawn are both repeat offenders, which is why I would be treading well clear of playing Gawn before round 8. I really don't care what he can add against Richmond or North - as a supposed premiership contender I expect us to win both games with or without him. I do care how he he is travelling in August and September when he will be desperately needed at 100% health and fitness. If that means missing a few games during the year, so be it.

I haven't been able to get down to watch a Casey game yet.

For Casey Track watchers: How has Turner been performing?

I am really keen to have Turner or Schache really make their case as the third tall down back.

I am one of the Petty forward heads. I just think he gives us more physicality and is better when the ball hits the deck. Would like to see him spend more time there to settle a bit and form some chemistry with the other forwards

Turner was good a week ago in his first game back and even better this week. He’s now ready to be considered for selection as the second key back ideally alongside Lever and May.

Schache has recovered from his concussion and is now ready to be picked as a forward/ruck, ideally alongside a couple of talls who will do the bullocking work and let him use his endurance and skills.

But if Lever, Gawn and BBB all come back alongside Grundy, May and Petty there’s only 1 tall spot left.

I think it’s reasonable to suggest that will be for JVR this week, with Petty down back. But maybe Turner could be the option from next week and we could look at a Petty/BBB/resting ruck forward half.

I didn't get the impression from Goodwin's post game press conf that Gawn was a lock vs Tigers.

He said Max was progressing well and mentioned other players recovering, saying most of them should be right to play next week.  Then a bit more chat and he added (not verbatim '...we are looking forward to getting Max back...'

It sounded open ended.

Ticketing question for anyone that can help. I've got an 11 home game GA membership and attempting to buy tickets online for 2 other non-members.

Usually my membership would get me in for free, however I'm being charged a $23 "upgrade" on top of 2 x $50 GA tickets. These are for level 4 seats available in the general public area. Is this normal or have I done something wrong?

I usually just use my card at the gate and but don't want to run the risk of not getting seats for my friends.

I think this is the upgrade fee to get a 'reserved' seat but I'm not totally sure.

Yes as @layzie says the $23 is for your reserved seat. In theory it's going to be in a better location than a GA seat if you just turn up. "Better" depends on where you prefer to sit though.

I prefer to be behind the goals over the wing but that's not necessarily thought of as "better" by the ticket allocators.

I think the recent delay of May's return hinted there was much more to it than just the player declaring they are fit.  He wanted to play (basically declareing himself fit to play) but because he hadn't reached certain measurable levels or strength and speed, he was ruled out.

I expect with Gawn, his return will depend on him proving certain levels of strength, flexibility and stability in his knee joint, as well as possibly having it rescanned and then after that completing a certain amount of full training sessions.

As for as Hibberd, Lever and Brown, weren't they all injured during those games you mentioned and then all missed following games?

Thanks, problem with this reserved seat option is it allocates me a seat and increases the GA price from $27 to either $39 or $50 for them. So we spend an extra $24 minimum on top of my extra $23 just to sit together.

Better off just buying 3 x $27 GA tickets and not using my membership which is a bit ridiculous.

Sorry I didn't realise the two GA x tickets had a raised price as well, yeah I can't explain that one.

The Anzac night game, gets big support. The GA section in level 4 is pushed up to the nose bleed area. A reserved seat for these blockbuster game is recommended, unless you are arriving very early.

Win this week and we should be in the top three again. Gee we are having a bad start to the year.

I thought that too but if St Kilda have a close loss to Carlton, we have a close win over Richmond and Sydney beat Geelong then we only jump to 5th.

The GA for all games in the northern stand is for reserved seating from my experience, if you want to stay in level 1 you have to go the southern stand and take your chances against the tiger fans. Other wise it is the nose bleed seats in level 4. I would rather Kayo than level 4 in a night game

I have also used the Ponsford level 4, the GA, is also pushed up to nose bleed. During a Collingwood game they were handing out reserved seat tickets as the GA was maxed out. Not great seats though.

No mention of any concussion for Sparrow in today's Injury Report.

Gawn, Hibberd, Brown and Lever all considered possibilities to play, although all have to get through training. Spargo out, of course (and we should remember it's a minimum of one week. Whether he's good to go the following week depends on his symptoms, not the number of days since the incident.)

I hope Gawn is back in (yes yes if fit etc.)

Grundy did well in the two games we won against the opposition playing one, single, less adequate ruck: Ladhams (SYD) and Williams (WC)

However playing against two decent rucks proved problematic in both games we lost against Bris and Essendon. Seems Tigers are sticking to playing with two Rucks even if Nank is out. So I image similar tactics that were used and explained by Essendon post match to target Grundy will again be used if he goes alone.

Food for thought.

Lever unlikely to get up again this week.

Gawn a better chance of playing.

If Lever doesn’t play we need to setup an intercepting defender. I recall seeing in most of our games that scores from half back intercepts / turnovers make up a large portion of total score. And having all 3 talls having to defend with no Hibberd meant we couldn’t launch.

Having Gawn there to drop back and defend D50 will go a long way to plug that until Lever returns.

They lined Petty up to do it last week he just took a half to get going, which might been because we couldn’t get any pressure at all on Essendon.

Gawn will certainly help, if nothing else it will take some game time from Grundy and make sure when’s in the ruck he’s got no excuse not to be in position.

I assume you mean a medium/tall interceptor / spoiler to replace like for like or close to it GtG.

Am i right in saying the only realistic list option at this point that fits the bill is Disco?  And he's probably still two to three games away at the very least.  Would also need to tick all the boxes at Casey.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was
