The Goodwin-Melbourne relationship is at risk of quickly turning into a Luke Beverage situation of a coach clearly out of their depth who will waste years with a good list because of one flag

People give you crap, but besides when you’ve obviously been taking the p*ss you’ve been spot on.

-Rooter should of been brought in literally months ago

- Gawn stumbled into AA this year, and we desperately need a main ruckman to take the load off - Grundy is obvious quality, and surely wouldn’t have put in two insipid performances like Dogga has this final series (and the whole contract situation has definitely been a distraction for the whole club)

- VFL players not rewarded. ANB did some great things tonight, but last 2 months has shown his lack of evasive skills in critical attacking moments that then swing the other way, can’t help but wonder what Chandler might have been able to do in that role this year. Salem as well has been mentioned but does have more credits in the bank than ANB.

-Refusal to change any game plan tactics after we were found out post round 10. We as supporters get criticised for our lack of cheering this year, but our dour game plan doesn’t leave much room for excitement unless the ball is in Kossie hands or Hunt in full flight. We ain’t cheering for a cumbersome BBB going slo-mo for a ball while being double teamed, because we know the result. JVR might have given us something fresh and exciting to cheer about.

-Lack of game day coaching creativity (I get there isn’t much you can do on game day, but ffs could we not have tried some proper corridor footy at any point in the last few months when we have obviously getting rolled in 4th quarters. Petty switch too late, and needed as a result of bad forward selection in the first place)

- One of the most infuriating things for me personally has been the narrative Goody and some of the players had been trying to paint about us finding our best footy the last couple of months. We’ve been the worst f50 pressure team and worst 4th quarter team going around, don’t sell us or yourselves that bullsh*t.

The premiership gives Goody some warranted goodwill going into next year, but we need some serious change next season. Straight sets to inter-state teams, gassed players by final quarters, and an appalling record at the G in front of hopeful fans (the place and people the club talked up as the main incentive for going B2B) doesn’t just hurt, it is a complete embarrassment. And that’s exactly how they should see it going into their season review.

- let’s hope Goody is more in the calibre of Longmire or Scott, but it really does feel like a Beverage situation. For the love of God prove us wrong!

Hunt, Harmes and Weideman all chances to be at other clubs.

Dees will hit the draft a bit more this year.

JVR and Howes will feature more next year.

That's the extent of the rumours I've heard so far.

I'd keep Harmes but Hunt can go not good enough. Weid I don't see anyone taking his contract so I think we are stuck with him. He's finished as a forward but could be a handy 3rd ruck.

i think having skimmed through everyones posts to try and pick the relevant stuff out of the frustration theres a pretty key theme featuring and its about our offensive or forward work. and i completely agree. whenever we tried to change lanes nd lower our eyes to hit targets there were none there. our forwards simply just were not hitting up at the leg whatsoever. clearly a marking tall is a necessity brown can hardly get off the ground and everytime we kicked it to him i was just imagining it was lynch or mckay there who just squeeze the thing so hard that it is impossible that anyone could possibly punch it away.

and i want us to play more offensive small forwards, the combination of ANB, spargo, and a resting mid usually sparrow sometimes viney or harmes is too much dead forwards, we dont have an issue with getting it down there our mids do that part well week in week out but we dont have enough players who can change the game and have that real zip and spark around goal. compare them to the hawks dynasty side with breust gunston poppy and cyril all big goal kickers. even the lions side today with mccarthy rayner bailey and charlie all huge goal kickers. or the way the tiges operated for 5 years. we just dont get the same goal nous and scoreboard pressure from our guys. bedford shouldve been given more chances as when he got ball in hand he looked likely inside 50 and couldve made more impact.

my other issue is with goody's favouratism of players. sparrow was serviceable post bye, didnt really have a super down day where u go geez only the 5-6 touches where was he but also didnt go 20+ and really dominate a game, was there anything more at all dunstan couldve done at vfl level to take his spot, but it was never really in danger was it, so there was no real hunger to stay in the side, compare that to the lions who dropped robinson, mathieson and prior today after a massive win last week in a final. similar story when laurie was really pressing mid year and ANB and spargs were down or with JVR towards the backend of the year.

i was finally happy when i saw at least he had a plan and the players were aware of it and familiar with it with 3 minutes to go of the last quarter. petty swung forward, may drifted closer to goal too and the wingmen took up super offensive positioning and the HBs surged through the centre square to try and get the ball going forward

Weird vibes all season. No way Longmire or Scott put up with Salem or Brown performances as long as he did. He coached in a trance all season and it showed: zero corridor footy. The club needed a teleprompt to get fans to "be loud", literally seconds later we see 4 Melbourne players fumble it in the forward 50 while the two Brisbane players throw it onto their boot to a teammate on their own 40 metres away... absolutely demoralising football for half the season and tonight was the cherry on top. You could absolutely smell it in the air after that goal on the siren, you could predict Brisbane would take that goal into half time as a real morale boost. Our response was to play with the same energy like as if it was round 3.

The defining moment was on the AFL Reserve wing late in the third when Gawn dropped an absolute sitter. Hardly any pressure. He was cooked. You knee then and there the season was done. We were cooked but we play a style that's complicit in it.

Goodwin is going to have to coach his [censored] heart out next season to make up for this utter disgrace of a finals series. This year's performance doesn't completely undo last year, but it goes a long way to feeding the "covid one hit wonders" narrative.

In the last 6 games of our season, Jackson kicked 1 goal and Gawn kicked 2. I don't understand how a resting ruck ever seemed a better alternative to a permanent key forward but Goodwin was clearly desperate to settle on a side and develop some cohesion before the finals.

Watching Petty have an immediate impact forward in the last 3 minutes of our year felt like a slap in the face. It really seemed to demonstrate what we could have done if Goodwin was more open-minded and dynamic with the game day moves.

I’ve been a big fan of Hunt, but his time is up. He lacks the required skill to be anywhere near an elite AFL footballer

Don't agree, we should be setting up to enable him to use his speed and run. He has been made to be too accountable. I like him as an attacking defender or even leading small forward as he was in 2020 or 2019 got knows we need someone lesson up to the ball and Hunt could get 5-10 on anyone in the league

i'm personally not a fan of bringing grundy in, but this is what i'm pretty much expecting

i wonder whether hunt will be picked up as a free agent by someone else; had such an up and down career

I can't believe how pedantic Goodwin comes across, with his stubborn approach to the games.

Salem needs to be dropped, I'd rather have Bowey.

Jackson has checked out please help him carry the bags to the plane.

JVR needs to come to our fwd line immediately next year.

I am.so angry atm and can't think clear...

We have too many that drink their own bathwater! PLUS Goodwins coaching is far too conservative! Hnmm

How many goals did the Lions get once Petty went forward? By my count, 3.

There is no free lunch.

Lever sums it up at the very end… distracted, disappointed and gives way 50. Kozzi continues to give free kicks away w late hits plus another 50 tonight. That’s Not what great players in great sides do. In general and across the board they were  mentally  off and the reasons fr that needs finding. Injuries? fitness? game plan? yze / jackson distracted? 23 feels like an enternity away.

A coach with low IQ and stubbornness is a bad combination in my view and he knows it and was incapaable of making the changes and becoming more daring as the season struggled

Good has to improve next year

Biggest problem is Goodwin’s obsession with players that just don’t  perform, we need a big forward, we missed TMac but we need another one, Van Rooyen must play round 1 next year. So [censored] off with the pathetic coaching, and the mistake of not dropping blokes when they are just not performing. Bring in blokes from Casey FFS

I think there's still a lot of raw emotion floating around (understandably), but suggestions Salem should go etc are laughable.

TEAM CHANGES

Retired: Daw

Delist: Mitch Brown, Baker, Melksham, Rosman (re-rookie)

Trade: Bedford, Tomlinson, Jackson (keep if he wishes to stay)

Free Agent Departure: Hunt (offer contract, but let walk if price too high)

Trade Bait: Weideman, Neal-Bullen

Forward line structure to consist of Fritsch, Pickett, Tom McDonald, Van Rooyen and then don't be afraid to trial Laurie and Chandler ahead of Spargo and Neal-Bullen.

Don't be afraid to give Blake Howes a go if his form warrants it and a review into our fitness base and last quarter fade outs is also paramount.

We need to make whatever changes to our side and list that address our weaknesses and maximise the performance of our top 8 impact players. These in my view are Gawn, Oliver, Trac, May, Langdon, Brayshaw, Petty, Fritsch. Mature players outside of this need to be seriously considered to move on unless there is a key reason we know impacted thjeir year eg: injuries to Lever and Salem. Those in the under 23 bucket (Spargo, Sparrow, Jordon, Rivers, Pickett) need to have major step changes in consistent output and improvement in their deficiencies or be overlooked for those that develop over the preseason that address our deficiencies (JVR, Bowey, Howes etc…). It’s hard to relate the words used that we want to be a ruthless club when we have gone 6 of 14 in the back half of the year and backed in the same 22 throughout whilst watching Casey roll out a 17-1 season and not reward those with impact.

I'd be disappointed if Harmes left. I know he probably wants to play midfield, but he's one who could become that mid sized forward were calling out for. Strong overhead, long (if sometimes dodgy) kick, and versatile.

The others I'm ok with losing. Maybe Sparrow or ANB might pique the interest of adelaide too?

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
