Should Jack Viney be captain again?

Was having this discussion with another Melbourne fan over the weekend over a few beers.

We both agreed that we felt Viney was much better prepared and a bit more mature enough now in easily slotting back into the role.

I'd love to see him slip back into that co-captain role alongside Gawn going into next year.

Thoughts?

No, probably too intense and perhaps focused on his own performance.  Not sure he would say the right thing at the right time.  In the past I sometimes thought that Jack was playing his own game, and the team another.

(if it was decided soley on courage and giving 100% then yes)

No.  He's not a leader.  Lever is a better choice

Not a leader? I think he's been exceptional in his leadership role this season. He might not have the tag but his game the other night had leader written all over it. He could easily co-captain again imo, but I don't think they will go down that path.

Since Jack overcame his foot injury and is now playing pain free he has become a much more rounded player able to run and provide drive with ball instead of bullocking and getting caught. He is a much better contributor to the team.

But still doesn't offer what Maxie offers as captain. An on field leader, great speaker and promoter of the club, imposing figurehead and all round good guy makes him the perfect choice at the moment. Oh, nearly forgot, Maxie is still the best ruckman in the league. Impressive credentials.

I love Viney. He always gives 200% on the field. He bloody loves the club and his teammates and is the first one to step in every time. He leads by example on the field and never takes a backward step.

I can't talk to his leadership in terms of how he talks to players on the field and instructs, encourages and inspires them verbally.

The one aspect that I find Jack lacking is in his communication skills particularly when fronting the media. This is not an easy skill to master and you either have it or you don't. I don't know how important that is for a captain but your captain is the face of the club. A captain has to be a promoter of the club. It's a role that encompasses every aspect of the football side of the club and that includes communication.

Max is the perfect person for this role at the moment. Trac or Lever would be my next choices in that order.

I love Jack, and I generally like the sentiment here Dazzle.

Having watched him for the last 10 years you’d have to feel he would have taken the vice captaincy as a demotion. I think he looked overly intense for the first year with Max as captain.

I noted earlier in the season he looked very happy this year and has been able to express a range of emotions on field, not just his trademark ‘absolute unrelenting intensity’.

If he was made the captain again at some point I’d have no issue with it at all. The players are mature enough, and supported well enough, to know what they need. We are a bit spoilt for leaders really.

I like the question. I do feel that Jack would be undoubtedly more prepared and better in the role the second time round but having Max as the sole skipper seems to be working a treat for the moment.

He's the spiritual leader for me and you don't need the title to be that.

He’s just the perfect vice captain is he not? The Sergeant Major. The attack dog.

He could take over from Gawn for a couple of years. I’m not quite convinced by Petracca, Lever or any other option just yet, but hopefully they have time. And when they do take the job they should have Viney as 21C

There is a reason why all the players say Max is the best Captain they have had.

Viney and Max are two very different people with very different leadership styles, I think Viney complements Max well and I think him being the VC is a good for him and the team

I think there was a comment made either by a player or Goody that when Jack was captain recently whilst Max was out, the atmosphere in the rooms was completely different. I'm not sure that the players can deal with his 110% style on a week on basis but having him as co-captain brings all the excellent qualities that Max has with a tempered tenacity that his co-captaincy brings.

As one other poster said he seems to be happier on the field - less scowling - maybe being a family man now has lightened the load.

His name is Max Gawn and he is and should be our captain. He's perfect.

Lever is the next captain for mine, by quite a way.

Petracca may well be a good VC.

I would hasten to disagree. Viney's media style is from the heart, with his message about the dark years being a regular (and relevant) refrain. I believe Viney keeps the big heads in line and speaks directly. His crash through heroics are well reflected every time he speaks.

I certainly get why your asking the question. Jack has lifted his game since he has over come his foot injury and leads by example every week.
Like most of the other poster I think Max is a brilliant captain and if it’s not broke don’t fix it.
However I’m not against his him having a more prominent vice captains role going into finals- given the on field pregame team talk like he did for the Lions game when he was captain.

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
