Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

Yes it was a wry observation in response to someone's equally wry p155take.

TMac doesn't handle injury well and Weed shouldn't replace him if he's injured.

I have no updates on my ex's relationship status in a cottage outside Ballarat but she was happily solo when she visited on mother's day.

Carry on..

If your ex is a potential 'in' against Freo, please tell us more about her.

Is there a nice view from her cottage ??

A few on this site seem to think that Hunt should be dropped. I think he's done an OK job ... assuming that his main job is to keep his opponent quiet. I suspect that the job of providing drive from the HB line is left to others who can kick better, e.g. Bowey, Rivers and Salo (of course) when available.

I don't think the depth is quite what we thought ...

Melksham/Weed/Baker ... had plenty of chances ...

Dunstan, not convinced ...

Bedford/Chandler ... I guess they're young and will get chances to show their stuff, but to me neither have shown much.

Freos Sam Switkowski has been sent to the tribunal for a chicken wing tackle. I have never heard of him till yesterday.

So is Sam Switkowski any good and how happy are we if he misses next week?

SS and Schultz with their defensive and creative work in the forward line is one of the main reasons why Freo is said to have a similar game style to us. He's a big out for them.

Except that these two words mean exactly the same thing.

And 6-8 weeks would be a long rest even for the old dear who does this tripping over her dog ..... Dermie played straight away, as did our Jimmy #11, and I am sure many others.

Hoping Viney and Harmes are right to play. Our depth is good, but Dunstan and Melksham are a step down and we need our best up and running to take on Freo. Freo are the best defensive side in the comp this year, so we’ll have our work cut out for us.

Freo are no match for us, easy 6-8 goal win coming up

Maybe look at a couple changes:

In: Viney, Laurie

Out: Dunstan, Melksham

I think Laurie has been in good form at VFL level and probably the next best winger outside of the current 22 the team has available with Howes injured, who is both tactically astute enough to play the role as well as having the pace/endurance to play the role. Benefit being it allows Brayshaw to stay back if possible as he has been in All Australian form there. Otherwise you could bring in a half back flanker and push Rivers or Bowser up to the wing for a week.

Having watched a fair amount of Casey this season I'd be shocked if Laurie was selected as wing - at this stage he does not appear anywhere fit enough for that role. Nor does he have great pace - what he does have is good footy IQ, evasive skills, great hands and good kicking skills albeit over shorter distance (the player he reminds me most of is Greg Williams - I know that is a stretch but just think he is the closest like for like. Whether he will ever get close to Diesel is anyone's guess - if he does he will be a very handy player)

Good assessment of his skill set  strengths and weaknesses. On weaknesses, his lack of pace is the biggest worry I reckon.

Williams is a really good comparison.

Mitchell (current and former) for the hawks is another similar player.

Not so long ago you could have 2 or 3 such players in the team - ie inside mids, extractor, high possession (mostly handball) types.

But these days you really only need one as the best mids now are tall, big and very strong bodies and/or have explosive break away pace.

We have viney in the Diesel Williams role. Laurie is probably going to be competing with Dunstan for the back up role.

You hate losing players, and I'm certainly not advocating trading him, but Laurie is the sort of player who we might lose because they want to play senior footy.

High enough draft pick, good skills, well developed by the best club and is probably ready for senior footy  and certainly will be after another AFL preseason. Could see another cluh being keen and unlike say baker, would have a bit of trade value.

Thinking outside the box a little bit, I wonder if ANB might be our best short term cover for Lingers if he misses.  He's already an up and back player and one of the fittest at the club.  Spargo, another up and back player could be his backup as I doubt ANB could do 100% TOG like Lingers does.  This would make Bedford the obvious IN to play half forward, with Laurie replacing him as medi sub.

Longer term, I've really sweetened on the idea of Salem playing half forward.  Angus and the whole backline is doing great and JJ is playing the wing role well.  Our BIGGEST and most obvious weakness is F50 entries and Salem is the best player on our list to fix this.  Yes, Salem is a great defender and stiff not to AA last year, but the backine is NOT our weakness.

What about, if Langdon doesn’t get up, pushing Neal-Bullen up onto the wing. He is one of the best runners in the team and probably the closest tank to Langdon. He has the defensive and offensive mindset and though he hasn’t been scoring many goals this year, he is way up in score involvements and goal assists which I still think he could get from a wing role. I’ve also seen him play up through the midfield a bit more recently so I think even more midfield/wing minutes might be good for him. It would mean then that a Bedford or a Laurie probably come into the team to fill Nibbler’s role and we think that Bedford is probably next in line anyway. Just a thought, what do you guys think?

definately Viney for Dunstan.  Dunstan got alot of ball but very few were effective

If Langers is out id go like for like and give Baker another opportunity (or debut Rosman)

Melk?  Not sure.  was rather invisible.  if it wasnt 200 id say replace him with Laurie.

keeping Bedford as sub

If Langdon is declared fit along with Viney, I can see a situation where the last man in is the first man out

In: Viney

Out: Dunstan

But anyone with a niggle might be rested (or may not be) so I won't be surprised if there is a player out with some sort of ailment

Switkowski is a good player and a big loss for Freo. But how pathetic is the tribunal? A weak chicken wing tackle applied with no force earns a two weeks suspension. He just basically folded Ginnivans arm behind his back. No signs of injury, pain or protest from Ginnivan. No sense of rational proportion at all.

Let me put your arm in that position and see if you still agree with that view. 2 for the guilty plea was very fair.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
