Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

St Kilda’s pressure and system is very good.

Right now, after the Lions, they are the biggest threat. But their defence is so poor I’m not too worried

I reckon their defence is pretty good. 72.5 average points conceded from the first six rounds. They shut down the contest effectively in the last quarter. A couple of times GWS would switch and hope, but couldn’t find a way through. Reminded me a lot of how some teams have no idea where to go out of D50 when they play us. GWS very fumbly and skill errors helped lock the result. Looking forward to our clash with them on Mother’s Day.

The game tonight was ok only. Was expecting better but GWS just seem to lack real purpose when the heat comes into the game

They don't use the corridor enough and can't seem to get on a run when needed. Not a lot of physicality although they were better than last week.  There's something missing though

As for the Saints - hard to judge them tonight but they do keep winning. As Ben mentioned above, their defence is decent

They are a reasonably good team but I'm not sure they can reach great heights just yet.  A top 4 spot is within their grasp though with a 5 & 1 start to the season.  And if you're top 4 you're a chance

Agree. Team defence good. But I reckon if you get through their back 6 is poor and you can score easily and quickly

Giants are finished. Not just this season but in general. No heart.

shut them down and pick at the carcass

I feel the same. I always hated them for all the draft assistance they received. I always thought they would become an unstoppable force eventually.

I feel they have missed their chance and are closer to a rebuild than a premiership.

The GWS experiment just proves to me that you can’t build an AFL club from nothing.
They lack history, generational support and passion, so it’s easy to just coast by.
All the talent in the world doesn’t mean much if the club is missing that intangible  “pride in jumper” emotion that drives and motivates players. Money is a great motivator to turn up to work each week, but money can’t force you to care.

Do the Western Sydney locals play Aussie Rules? There doesn't appear to be any grassroots support and without that there is no point in having an AFL team. Same with Gold Coast. I reckon the AFL would be better off putting money into the local footy community in Western Sydney to create a base. Grow the game that way rather than having an AFL team with no supporters

As an expansion team the Giants have been pretty good. They've played a decent brand, been mostly hard at it and were close for a couple of years. Their senior players are letting them down at the moment. Kelly needs to be cut loose and Coniglio has regressed badly. Greene is a fantastic player but has big discipline issues. They need to improve their list to challenge again but they are not a lost cause. They have built up a good rivalry with the Swans as well.

Cameron has been a good coach but has outstayed his welcome. They need a new coach with a fresh approach. Will make a difference.

And a trivial/not trivial point. They need to change their colors. That orange strip looks terrible

Time and again GWS would be under huge pressure in their back line. Scrambly handballs here and there, players dodging multiple Saint tackles, ball pinging backwards, sideways in handball chains ... finally the ball would get to a Giant with a tiny bit of space, he would get it to a Giant in the clear (usually near the boundary), and then upfield ........... nothing. Forced to stop dead & take stock of his options. Stationary Giants just watching. Finally someone makes a lead. Sideways. Ball crosses the field to the other flank. No options there either. Kick long to a contest and repeat. There were hardly any easy scores. They scrapped and scrambled without system for every goal, and as we MFC fans can attest, that's not a sustainable way to play if you have any desire to win consistently.

(Why switch play to the other flank if no-one can be bothered to get into space there either? Isn't that the point, to find some space and catch the other team on the hop? Otherwise all you've done is wasted two kicks and a bit of time.)

No-one anticipating, gut running to space to give their teammate someone to deliver to. All that talent at their disposal and that's really all they have. They play on pure talent, which is wonderful when it clicks, and wasteful as hell when it doesn't.

They've failed to exploit their massive advantage, and meanwhile, their supposed rivals at GCS, who were said to have gone about their club-building the wrong way, are the ones who appear to be building something with character and spirit. (Time will tell.)

They looked to have given up halfway through the last when only 2 goals down. It all seemed just too hard.

Imagine what a Clarkson, a Simpson, a Longmire, or ... a Goodwin/Yze/Williams could do with a list with hardly any holes in it, and a sympathetic city hall.

Now on the positive side. Watching all that made me appreciate all over again the wonderful footballing machine we are blessed with. GO DEMONS!!!

Last week it was a selfish Devon Smith asking for a handball from a teammate that was lining up 10 metres out and subsequently missing a left foot snap, then last night we had Himmelberg doing exactly the same thing to Flynn. No wonder those teams are struggling when players are making it all about themselves, back your teammates and get around them.

GWS have the cattle to be much better but I see them being quite a bit like our 2019. Each player is now in selfish-self preservation mode, there is no dare or self-belief that they are doing the right things. Their season (if it wasn’t already) is now definitely over.

Just throwing it out there, Clarko to GWS? List with potential, greatest coach of the modern era, the AFL would gladly throw the money at the giants to get him.

On the Saints, I think we have to accept they might be a real deal. The biggest thing that makes me say that is that they are responding to pressure. They’ve come from behind against the tigers with a flurry, responded to the Suns putting some heat on, came from behind in the first half to grind out a win again GWS (in a pressure game for both clubs).

Still to early to say if they’ll be a top 4 contender but when we face them I think there’ll be an expectation that they will be a team in September to look out for.

Absolutely agree. GWS have really good leaders, and have made a GF in recent years, and actually play hard and tight in around stoppages. But their forwards, especially their half-forwards are  lazy, lack intent, and don't/won't do the running required.

They have Hogan in there, which immediately drops your forward pressure acts into negatives. FWIW I have no ill feelings towards Jesse, but his lack of second/third efforts and regular sulking always bothered me, I love the fact that even if our forwards get a bad kick in, or don’t get it to them there’s no sulking. Jesse could not work in our current club culture.

Last nights game was a disappointment. Hopefully Freo and Carlton is better. I'm interested to see how both these teams perform now that expectation levels are starting to rise

So far Freo have shown good resilience under pressure and their defense has held up really well.
This can obviously not be said for Carlton who start like a house on fire and then collapse like… well… a house on fire

Funny reaction form the Crows player to that BS free paid to the dogs (the dogs player ducked his head into the tackle). The arms went out for a split second before he realised what he was doing. Quickly put the arms back down again

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
