Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

I’ve always seen Dunstan  as inside. Think he’s as good as we’ve got to try and replace Viney.

Yep, the better comparison to Dunstan is if Harmes could get a game as a pure mid. Both capable clearance players, but unreliable by foot. Dunstan is probably a slightly better player at stoppages, but Harmes is the better runner.

I think that Tmac is better than Weid, but he is clearly in decline.

Weid has potential upside. Which is presumably why he will be preferred to Tmac moving forward.

As for the other 'ins' this round, Smith is clearly Goody's love child.

And Dunstan is an obvious inclusion. No point in having recruited him if he was wasn't selected in this situation (Viney out).

Watch Dunsatns career highlights

shows him kicking goals not getting clearances!

Don't think it will. Suspect that Tom is now out for the long haul, he's going to have to find consistent form again, not just show up for one or two Casey matches.

Could be wrong.

Is not that the same requirement of Weid that he shows some consistent form?

Nope. They played together against Carlton, but McDonald also played.

While technically true, I’d say that game doesn’t count. Brown was hardly going at that stage, and was actually dropped after it.

I for one am happy with Weeds pick over Tom Mc. He is taller, younger and finally getting close to the bulk and strength of Tommy. He is part of our new generation.

He simply must fire tonight and continue to do so.

Goody, in my opinion, has always been an underrated coach -  even by dees fans.

That of course changed with a premiership, but I still think he has skills that get overlooked.

We all know the players love him, but I don't think he gets the credit he deserves for his emotional intelligence  and how this informs how he helps individual players to improve.

Some players would respond to being fired up, and no doubt Goody would pull that rein when needed.

But Weed seems to be the sort of person who puts heaps of pressure on himself, so doesn't need more.

He plays his best footy when he is relaxed. And I suspect his least best when he is on edge.

Goody will be telling weed the exact opposite of fire up or else, because it won't get the best out of him.

He'll be saying just do what you did last week - compete, second efforts and gut run. Don't worry about anything else. The goals and marks will take care of themselves.

And if he starts flying and spoiling BBB tonight then its over for me with thim.

I hope Goody sorts this out because this is a problem with Weids as I see it.

And keep out of baileys patterns also.

But will he or should he even?.  Don't tell me Steven May plays relaxed.  He's on edge all game. best Full back in Australia.

You make some good points but if Weid needs to relax to play well then he's in the wrong sport.

Tonight will see him right for the next 6-8 games, or IMO marked never to be slected again.

The talls under a clear instruction to go up as one in aerial contests up forward - it an important element of our system.

It makes perfect sense.

Multiple bigs going for the same mark is the key reason why we concede the fewest intercept marks inside our 50 of any team in the AFL. When we don't mark it it comes to ground in a predictable spot and fashion and we either crumb it and score or create a stoppage.

And the congestion makes it very hard for opposition teams to move it out of our 50 - if we spread more, as say the dogs do, and is the traditional model,  there is more space at around the contest and it is easier for the opposition defenders to win ground balls and get it out of their back half - as the dogs have discovered when we play them.

But we also clunk more contested marks inside 50 than any team over the last season and a bit, so the system works in this regard too.

So be prepared to get frustrated.

Robbie Flower played chilled. Seemed to work for him ok.

Same goes for Fritter and Langdon.

T-Mac might only be out of the team for a week or 2 if Weideman doesn't fire ... remembering that this is Sam's 4th game in a row tonight

Played very well against Essendon, was quiet against Port (on a night, not ideal for key forwards) and only reasonable last week

Is reasonable again enough? Maybe, but the expectations are higher

Of course, T-Mac needs to fire in the 2nds anyway in order to put pressure on Sam so it's an interesting scenario.  Playing today on a small ground like Punt Rd oval is a test for any key forward.  Not a lot of space to run into (or available space)

The MC would be happy with the duel though. Much like they'd be happy with Smith & Tomlinson putting pressure on as well as Dunstan, Chandler & Bedford being thereabouts as well for midfield/small forward roles

And that's with Salem, Hibberd, Lever, Viney all being unavailable!

The MC have got their ideal set-up with regards to selection.  Injuries are annoying to our better players but that is offset somewhat by the ability of the players replacing those injured players

And ordinarily, a team is nearly always going to get a few injuries (as well as factoring in covid protocols)

Tmac has not been in great form for a while. Why does Weideman need to fire up to keep someone who is in poor form out of the team?

All I want from Weideman is a consistent attack on the footy and solid work rate. He doesn’t have to do much to replicate the output we got from Tmac this season. He just needs to work hard without the footy and take his chances with the footy. If he kicks 1-2 goals and is able to neutralize contests, bring ball to ground and follow up his work by continuing to present up the ground, he has done his role.

We are not a team that depends on one or two players to have superstar games every week. If he plays his role he will keep his spot, just as everyone else has (and why I find it hilarious that some keep saying we need to drop Spargo or Pickett or JJ if they don’t have a statistically stellar game).

Quite sure he will.

Well ,when Weideman is finishing up (at whichever club it is) I wonder if he will have had  almost AA full back year,( half year pre injury) a  50 goals with very few behinds tall forward year... to go with strong stand in the middle of the pack ,genuinely clunking, marks and elite running efforts and competent forward line pre Gawn rucking skills.

Injuries and the burden of a mostly crepe team has been Tom's game...apparently Weideman's only failing is above his shoulders and not being gifted enough games.

Anyway Goody was correct about Spargo and I was mistaken,so it's possible but not certain that he will get Weideman out of his current depth/ "potential " ranking.

The one thing that is " certain" is that Tom won't have said pre season that he was ready and determined to step up and be the main goal kicker like Weideman did about 3 years ago.!

Still waiting mate.

i personally would've gone with tommy mac over weed simply cos i 'trust' him more, but if you look at the numbers, they're remarkably similar except for contested marks (where weed is averaging 2 a game, and plugger under 1), weed is taking double the i50 marks, weed is nearly 1 more i50 entry per game higher, but his 1%ers are way down compared to tom - which is probably why i favoured him as his 'effort' seems much higher

i dunno...like always since late 2020 i'm basically backing on the coaching dept to have pulled the right rein

The "changes" thread becomes redundant once the teams are announced and is duly locked.

What do other posters think of the idea that this "teams" thread should be combined with the match day thread instead of having both running and often discussing the same issues?

Fair enough..so perhaps the mods should now just ban opinions( with or without reasons) henceforth.

Did you hear the story about me sitting on the balcony with a mate at a Dee's vs North match many many seasons ago?

Barry Cable coaching North from the box which  in those days was open and just a" lean across "from our seats.

Half time ..Brian Wilson is cutting up North playing on the wing and my mate says " they should put Glendenning( I think it was) on Wilson"...so I say.."the coach is just there why don't you tell him" and so Benny did....

" What did he say?

" nothing,didn't even look "

A few minutes later....runner comes out and moves Gelendenning onto Wilson who hardly gets another kick..North come back and win!!

Game over..Benny leans across as coach descends..

" good move with Glenndenning"

" what did he say?"

" nothing ,completely ignored me"

Benny dined out on that story whenever I was there to verify it

On Ology GSmith could remember the game and the 2nd half North comeback.

I am confident Goodwin in general knows far  better than me, but you haven't yet given one reason why he does on this occasion  and further to that you might have noted that I at least suggested the possibility that the coaching group may well be correct.

Anything else I can clarify for you.

I actuly used to think Weideman could be an asset myself

Tmac well down on career averages. 11 disposal a game this season to career average of near 16. He used to once average over 20 for a long  time. And only four goals so far. Contested marks down as well. Needs a reset.

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
