Gawn has been very durable over the last few years.  While not ideal its an opportunity for others to step up within the team.

The silver lining, it give Gawn a chance to get a good rest for the remainder of the season to lose all those niggling injuries.

Also a chance for us to not rely on kick long to Max every kick in and when we move the ball slowly. It's a great luxury to have this option but feel we do it too often. Also a good chance to be less predictable in the centre bounce.

Sounding like a cracked record I have been asking for a couple of weeks, why has Majak missed games recently?  Injury? Illness?

This should be his moment.

Next four are Bris, Adel, Geel, Port. Not ideal but not the scariest jobs for Jackson ruck wise.

Good point. Great opportunity for King Jacko!

Think Jacko will cover the ruck easily enough.

The bigger issue will be less big man depth in the forward line and around the ground:-

Maybe it forces us to try something different that works though. Does a smaller fwd line stop us from bombing it inside 50 in hope

He's missed at least one with illness and while I think he's been pretty good in the VFL, his tank is still a worry IMO

When it rains it pours. We have been cruelled by injury this year but so have many other teams. given the significance of Gawn, i now think we will be lucky to hold onto a top 4 spot.

Upside is his body will be allowed to heal and hopefully he can return quicker and provide us some energy towards the tail end of the season.

I'm not a fan of Weid until he can string 4-5 games in the VFL and be busting door down for selection not a gentle tap. He is not the answer right now. Joel Smith should be approaching fitness by now so hopefully he can provide some alternative forward options 2 weeks time.

We do need to bring in some additional height though to cover Max, so i think Tommo could come in here. He can play both front and back and provide LJ some chop out in the ruck. He is much more versatile than Weid and has some physicality in his game.

How long does syndesmosis take to heal? Syndesmosis injuries generally involve a period of immobilisation for 4-6 weeks depending on severity. (Yes that means a moon boot!) Following this we allow a further 6-12 weeks for a full recovery.20 Apr 2021

Well that's just it, sometimes from these moments you're forced to shift to a new setup that catches teams by surprise with it's unpredictability. Remember when Cam Pedersen had to stand in for Max around 5 years ago? For the short term the opposition never knew what to expect at bounces and it actually benefited us.

I don't think there is any other option than the weed in for Max. For those calling on Majak have a serious think about the consequences. He is not in any way up to AFL standard.

Where is my blanket to throw over my head!!!

But seriously, not good. With our run home and our form I think we will struggle to go 50/50 over the next 10 weeks.

But will release a bit of pressure I'd say with less expectation.   I'm still positive :)

Correct.  Jackson and Weideman will be the combination.  And I think we'll adopt a smaller forward line too.

It's a far from ideal but Weid needs to come in as the second ruckman, and stay in the side. At least he gets involved in the game as the second ruck

We'll have to change our three key forward philosophy and downgrade it to two as Mitch Brown isn't up to it and JVR probably isn't ready. We did the two key forward thing in the first 6 rounds of last year and went 6-0.

BBB with Weid or LJ as the second key forward depending on who's rucking.

Fritta will need to step up and play as a quasi key forward.

Everyone needs to step up if they want to make something of this year.

Carlton have managed without Pittonet reasonably well, Grundy has been out since Anzac Day and the Pies just won 4 on the trot.

It is possible, it might look different but it is possible to work around this. I know Max is a special player and we will miss his presence no doubt but this is where our coaches and strategists will earn their bucks. Have to give them a chance.

On AFL 360 last night Goodwin said Max was sore at training - I think he said it was a back issue but difficult to make out the audio.

Then Cox crashed him with this knee.

... who were the morons on the bench giving him cheek - from the tv vision they looked more like supporters than support staff!

I was near the Collingwood bench on Monday. Maxy was giving Crisp a mouthful as he walked off, I presumed because of something he might have done to BBB or Kozzie.

No pies supporters were mouthing off ( well not then anyway )

It’s not the max injury in isolation but the trend of injuries coming through consistently and it’s effect on our ability to play out games on top of coming into loading. Max is the icing on the cake hopefully. Hard to get everything lined up for a strong run home from here I think. All good. We have a five year window with this squad and lots can and will happen.

Agree with you, but the problem is that we have also been relying on Max in a forward line that is already dysfunctional, so there’s almost 2 roles to fill. Weid is the logical answer but he has been given so many chances to prove himself…

Time to switch the script from being the hunted to being the hunters.   We have been way too accommodating lately playing a slow predictable brand.   Manic pressure, a constantly moving forward line and we should still win enough games to play finals.

The switch needs to get flicked on with this mob, we can't cruise to finals without playing a finals type brand in regular season  games now.   Needs to be a lift from the entire team....Don't let this opportunity slip Demons!

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
