Should we go for a developing ruckman or just best available? A developing ruck is the only spot we haven't focused on we have Jackson and that's it. Is there a ruckman that will go around that pick?

Luke Jackson’s the only type of ruck I’d draft in the top 40. Rookie list, late pick or even bring guys in to train over summer is probably all we should be thinking for the ruck.

There’s a number of tall forwards in this draft that I’m sure JT will have his eye on. If the cards don’t fall right for those guys my guess is he’ll look where he always looks - combative, quick midfield types, ideally who can play forward (or back).

Interesting article here.

https://amp.theage.com.au/sport/afl/premiers-swoop-pick-swap-puts-melbourne-back-in-draft-20211006-p58xu3.html?__twitter_impression=true

The Demons have particular players in mind for pick 17, but believe there is next to no chance that their highly athletic key position next generation academy prospect Mac Andrew will be available at that selection because he will be picked in the top 10 and clubs can no longer match bids for academy players inside the draft’s top 20.

I really like this approach from us, it's very different to the Tigers/Hawks/Cats dynasties, where when they reached the peak they look to top up to stay in the window

we're backing in our core and leaders and looking to build from underneath. i think this is incredibly smart and a great formula to keep us contending for a long time to come/avoid running off the edge of the cliff like the Cats are about.

I also think winning the flag this year with the side/core so young takes a huge amount of weight and expectation off them having been there and done that, i reckon we're a chance to be right up there for the next 8-10 years and potentially win another 3-4

Topping up already with freebie from St Kilda

With 17, is there no way they can engineer/package/trade up other picks with Freo for Cerra?

I think Freo is pretty set on Carlton's pick 6. I'd be surprised if we could trump that

17,37 and 49 Taylor and his team are just brilliant at what they do. I think Taylor will go best available. A mid that can go forward like Laurie and a midfielder that can go back like Bowey. I don't know if he will risk going for a big man at mid range picks. The last time he did was on King and Hulett who were flops. He has a great record with midfielders mid range like Bowey, Sparrow and Jordon.

Hope we package up 37 & 49 to get a pick in the late 20s

I would argue that pick 17 in the first year of you premiership window is far more likely to impact your ability to win flags than pick 7 in the year after your premiership window closes. The value of a good kid contributing to a flag diminishes ever year closer you are to the end of your flag window.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the whole issue in a nutshell.

I'm am very happy with the swap.

...except,  of course, if we finish last in 2022

No way we miss finals next year. Don't rule out further trades to move up on draft night.

Chandler in talks with Crows?? May get a late pick or late future?

Pretty certain if he wants to go to the crows he does so without a trade. Chandler is a rookie listed player who is out of contract. Maybe check with others who know more, but don't think we get anything there sadly.

I already have my eyes set on Josh Rachele from the Murray Bushrangers with this pick

Small forward/midfielder with A ton of X factor about him.

Think of a Toby Greene/Alan Didak

I would be rapt. Well before the season started, I had him pegged for top three on the “2021 AFL National Draft prospects: The next batch” thread for exactly those reasons that Dazzle put forward. My only reservation now is, how is he going to find his way into a Melbourne team with so many quality small/medium forwards?

I guess if he’s good enough, he will but I don’t really see him falling out of the top ten.

Yeah, I like to keep things simple George. If only for my own sake. We have no idea where we will finish next year or who is available in the draft so why worry about it. As Donald Rumsfeld might say it's a known unknown.

Glad he's not running our recruiting department.

We had the best injury run ever and lost Burgo. We’ve lost the ability to trade for Cerra this year by not having our pick, next year that means no Ben King or other highly rated player most likely. And Collingwood probably though getting 2 nice picks was better than their first rounder this year until they tumbled from finals to second last.

Having seen the locked in deal I’ll say it’s fine, maybe even good, but have to at least consider this won’t be good if we miss finals.

You seriously think we are a chance to miss finals?

I have already declared MFCSS dead; this is some other disease or ailment. I take no ownership. May god have mercy on your soul.

He's come through our Bushies system since school boys days. His under 16 yearr was very impressive also which shot him in recruiters eyes.

From Shepparton and was an absolute gun soccer player. To the point where he was with one of the Melbourne development squads and actually had to choose between football and soccer.

He's a powerful and strong athlete bit like Petracca with his low gravity strength in being able to brush off opponents.

There'll be other names around this pick that will be highly considered. Names like Matthew Roberts, Josh Sinn, Jacob Van Rooyen, Joe Amiss etc.

Some serious talent will slep through to our pick.

So far. The Club has been unbelievable at trading their way to the player/s they want. Would not surprise me if the trend continued and we managed to move further down the order.

About the same odds as Hawthorn and the Dogs missing it in 2009 and 2017. Easy to look at the reasons they missed out now in hindsight and say they won't apply to us but I doubt anyone was saying they would before the start of those years. I'd put missing the finals next year as not much less likely than us winning the flag by 70 points before this year.

The inability to land a big fish and the possibility of ending up with a pick somewhere between 10-14 next year and having a top 5 guy on JT's board fall to that range are probably more compelling reasons not to do this trade than our pick being in the single figures.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to
