We have an exceptional crop of young players. Jason Taylor should be knighted. We'll be a Top 4 team for the next 10 years on the back of his stellar recruitment.

Can’t believe the comments about Jackson’s consistency. He has been super consistent, and has barely had a bad game. If anything, he’s lacking that massive break out game that would seal the deal. I have comfortably ahead of Jordon and Rivers, who have both also been very good this year.

I'm watching shades of Cale Morton with Cox..

Potentially. He's super soft, but he's also played second ruck quite a bit this year and that takes a bit of physicality. I think he's just tired.

Not going to disagree but much easier to be consistent in those roles. Also, in the case of JJ, he's seems as close to a finished product as any player his age. Rivers has had the chance to play along side the best two defensive leaders in the game.

While neither of those two points should negate their consideration for the award, LJ is a genuine rising star and I've always thought this award was more about picking the next big thing rather than just simply choosing the best performed young player.

I thought it was about  the best young player that season not just on potential or they'd have their dacks down for Matty Rowell....Again. I do agree with your points tho. Think Jackson has the qualities to be a great player for us.

This thread is about ready for a bump.

Luke Jackson is an absolute star. There's no doubt that he has a chance of winning the rising star award this year. In our past two wins he has easily been in our top 3-5 best players. It's amazing to think that he's only 19 given the amount of talent he's already shown. Fast becoming one of the best young players in the competition.

His best 2 marking nights have now been in the wet, against the Tigers and tonight.

He still has so much to learn as a forward with leading patterns and one on one body work, hasn't quite nailed centre bounce rucking either and there's certainly more work to be done in getting him to run with the ball and kick it to targets. Like all Melbourne midfielders he does love a handball!

But he's does his role, competes and seems to be growing his game. Even his quieter games are full of solid efforts and that alone for a player of his age is really commendable.

I am the most One eyed biased Dees supporter and one of my Essendrugs supporting mates told me to bet on him about 6 weeks ago and I stupidly argued with him and didn't get on.

Would love to dig up some of the posts on here from October 2019. I don’t think there was a single person who wanted to draft him (myself included). Imagine if you’d said at the time  “This guy will be an important cog of our 2021 Premiership tilt”. You’d have been laughed out of here. But that’s what he is.

He looks like he's grown in confidence with his marking, suddenly has a huge presence up forward!

Put my hand up and say I've been riding him hard the last few weeks. Mostly just me thinking that he needed to have a spell so that he's cherry ripe for finals.

How wrong was I. Jackson was phenomenal last night and I had him down as a clear BOG. I also thought this was his game ever in red and blue. He was unbelievably clean last night and coming up against his childhood hero in Naitanui didn't faze him one bit. His contested marking is really starting to shine through now and I put that down to the more games and experience he's gained this year.

It shows amazing resilience and strong mental capacity that he can will himself out of a form slump at the age of 19. We're seeing a future star unfold before our eyes

You can now tell that he belongs in this level now. I put Harrison Petty in that same basket. Both players are going to play pivotal roles come September.

This makes him sound like a good, honest trier.

He is one cool dude!

Playing at 'home' in front of family for the first time, against his idol (NN) and put in a performance worthy of a 150 game player.  Gave a great interview after the game.  Cool as.

Mature way beyond his years.

On a side note.  With WCE sliding, Freo in the middle of the pack and us at the top end, I can see him extending his contract soon which expires next year.  He is getting great recognition and exposure; fave for RS and having a great time.  Contract extension sooner rather than later I would say.

I hope he doesn't follow his idol's fitness routine. Boy does Nic Nat need to drop a few kilos.

Yeah, I don’t like to Fat shame, but noticed when we came out for the restart how big his tummy looked. Not peak AFL fitness which shows in his late quarter efforts.

Dogga is a gun though.. like a few on here, I was worried about his dropped marks earlier this year. He has that fixed!

Yes, NN is looking heavy.  He is managed in games:  rests after 10 minutes.

His impact is still very good.  His ability to palm the ball into the hands of his midfielders was sublime - the ball just slides off his hand as if it is happening in slow motion.  Usually results in a clean getaway by the midfielder.  Wouldn't mind if LJ learns that skill.

Reckon #17 might me a chance if a nomination this week after last night's effort

He should be nominated but he cant win it.

Its a joke of an award  - its impossible to win effectively by being nominated after round 14.

You either have a best first year player award OR you have an award for the player that is the most likley to be a star

And there are good players that have great years but don't get nominated because someone has a blinder one week.

Or the AFL need to spread the love for teams that haven't yet been nominated....

Jackson's timing with his marks has improved over the course of the season and he is regularly getting two hands to the ball in pack situations. He just needs to nail his set shots a little better.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
