Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

I’d suggest that says more about Sam as a person than anything else. I think everyone wanted him to make it.
And Melky is an import, so doesn’t have that same birthing connection

So people pick and choose their angst?

Weed is a good bloke so he gets a pass?

Wattsy was a dee AND a top bloke. Didn't stop him copping a fair bit of vitriol on this forum. Likewise col Sylvia. There are any number of other examples over the ladt decade.

Again, I'm glad Weed didn't cop much heat. But I'm not sure why you're surprised that I'm surprised he didn't.

There has been 5 years of objective awareness that Sam was inconsistent at best or does not have required levels of intensity/competitiveness in a consistent manner... hence no angst, just disappointment and a shrug...

Unfortunately for Sam this is reality. I'm surprised it hasn't got more attention on Demonland, or indeed more broadly.

Bottom line we absolutely desperate for a second tall forward. We had one in Weed, who by the by was a top 10 draft pick, and decided not to use him.

I'm sure Goody was hugely frustrated that Weed wasn't up for the job, and as i say i'm surprised there hasn't been more angst towards Sam for not stepping up when he needed.

Little doubt that MacDonald going down and Weid not stepping up spooked the coaching panel.

Surprised  we did so little this trade period to rectify the problem. I assume Gunston was too expensive or the contract too long

I'm so surprised at the number of posters who keep asking questions about Gunston. He was never a chance of coming here, or going anywhere other than Brisbane.

From foxfooty:

Essendon is wanting to effectively flip Aaron Francis for Sam Weideman in a three-team deal involving Sydney and Melbourne, reports AFL Media.

Francis and Weideman, who were both taken inside the first 10 picks in the 2015 draft, have been linked to the the Swans and Bombers respectively for third-round picks as they look for more senior opportunities.

AFL Media reports Melbourne would prefer the third rounder to come from Essendon though, while Sydney’s selection is more likely to be in this year’s draft, meaning a pick swap is also on the cards.

Sydney have:  14, 17, 37, 75.  Ess have:  4, 22, 42, 62, 68

Technically Weideman is worth more in picks than the others as he is in contract while the others haven't been offered a contract.  tbh I'm not sure of letting Sam go if we are going to replace him with Schache.  Not much saving in $ and not sure what the benefit is in a like-forl-like.  We would have to offer Schache two years

Ironically if we get Schache to replace Weideman that is picks 2, 9 and 6 (Francis) from the 2015 draft all changing clubs at the same time for 'equal' value..  Not a good draft for early selections of tall players.

This year’s pick 37 for Weideman would be preferred to a future pick given we’ve acquired a few already through other trades. Don’t know if that’s realistic though.

I have no logic or reason other than somehow I still think he can be a good player that makes me hope we hang onto Weid. I know he hasn’t stepped up, I also know we have stuffed him around selection wise at times, I further know he is likely better than who we would get for the pick we receive. Hang around Sam.

Do we trade him now, potentially for a 2nd round pick or do we let him battle away at the Casey Wind Tunnel for a year, by the end of which he'll be out of contract and off to a new home?

If we're bringing in BBB we may as well trade Weid now whilst he has some currency.

I don’t see the point in a future pick. We’re in the window now and while Sam’s form hasn’t been great we’re light on for rucks and his best footy appears to be as a 2nd ruck/forward. He’s also at his lowest ebb in value, I’d rather back him in for one more year but if we decide to take 37 that’s ok, but definitely not a future pick.

I'd be happy with pick 37# in this year's draft for Sam Weideman.

But it will probably be a future 3rd round from Essendon or Sydney.

However, I wouldn't trust Adrian Dodoro as far as you could throw him....😒

Also with Weid, I think a major factor in not making it is suitability to our game style.

He likes a bit of space to roam in and lead into. We like stagnant tall forwards in a pack that we kick to, intentionality to halve a contest and create a contest or stoppage.

I'm not saying he'll be Matthew Lloyd, but I do feel that when a bit of space is created around him, he is more likely to succeed. We've seen this when he has had purple patches on field. He doesn't suddenly become the Hulk in a pack, he is allowed to play his natural game, most likely because of how the opposition is playing.

True, not my best post, but just so frustrating time and time again..

Yes, but he didn’t select himself to play in those games, and he had been showing reasonable form at Casey. Now that he’s getting an opportunity somewhere else, we should be wishing him the best; even by playing at Casey he still contributed to our club’s success last year.

I actually think Weid hasn’t copped it quite as much because most of us know our game style just doesn’t suit him, he’s a lead up player and unfortunately we’re just a bomb it in team that struggles to lower their eyes. I really hope he gets a chance at any team that will play to his strengths and if he goes I wish him luck.

Good points.

And totally agree with you and deanox. His best position is a true lead from the goal square full forward.

I posted something similar a few months back. I can't recall who it was, but another poster replied and made a good point that the way footy is now he's not going to get space or leading lanes at any club.

But with our game style he's got no hope of getting space.

Whatever happens for him, I hope he makes it.

I really wanted the Weid to make it but not to be unfortunately. Keeping him in the ressies as ruck back-up when he has the opportunity for a fresh start is the wrong thing to do. Let him go. We can find a back-up ruck elsewhere

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
