Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

My recollection is that the "Leadership Group" concept either arose from or was strongly pushed by that consulting company called Leading Teams. I haven't heard anything about Leading Teams in quite a while. Does it still exist? Do other clubs still use it? And have the methods and ideas of Leading Teams fallen out of favour?

Yep their office in South Melbourne is still open

No sure that they added any measurable difference to our Team. Bit of a fad in my opinion.

To @Skuit

Thanks for the suggestions (I have used them before)  but I prefer to keep my postings as short (in length) as possible.

Some posters quote long entries and add only a single line of commentary. I find these posts wasteful. Navigating these threads is hard enough without spending time scrolling through pages and pages of repeated entries.

Keeping in mind the carbon footprint.

To tiers,

There's a quote function located on the left-hand side below each post. You can also add an @ symbol before a poster's name to get their attention. Like this @tiers.

Yours sincerely, Skuit.

You are a kindred spirit Mr Skuit, I'm constantly working on my sincerity.

And for those people worrying about how Jack Viney might take the demotion (a concern I share), I hope someone sets him up to have a conversation with Sam Mitchell. Mitchell didn't appear to lose his ability, drive or support for the club after the same thing happened to him. To me, that showed real leadership and class.

Mitchell was appointed Captain under an arrangement that he would hand it over to Hodge after (from memory) 2 seasons. So not relevant.

Max as captain will mean a huge increase in quality of media interviews and PR that AFL skippers have to do. He is natural, funny, direct, uncompromising and most importantly - he can think on his feet.

I am yet to see how his on-field leadership will go. He has massive boots to fill after Jones and Viney, whose on-field actions were often inspiring and ferocious. Both are warriors. I know they can continue to do it without the title of captain, but can Max do it? The first 8 rounds of the regular season will be very interesting to see how he develops.

In Paul Roos's words "Leadership is players telling other players what to do."  I loved Jones and Viney leading by their actions but unfortunately not sure they were great at guiding players by telling them what to do. Max has to do this in the midfield setups. Will be interesting to see how he manages around the ground. Lever and May appear to be the standout onfield leaders that satisfy this criteria. We need a lot more of them.

I don't recall that arrangement, but I don't see why it makes it any less relevant. Mitchell still had to cope with the perception that he had been slighted, even if it was structured in a different way.

Don't agree. There were two worthy Captains and they had an agreed Captaincy sharing model. Mitchell first two years, Hodge after that. Very different to being stripped of it after you've been appointed permanently.

A bit irrelevant really. Your point is taken that hopefully JV will be fully engaged despite being stripped of the Captaincy. You'd think knowing what we do of him that he will be. Can't imagine it being any other way. I'd be more interested in what impact the discovery that Polly Farmer had CTE will have on the head first take no prisoners way he plays the game which has already lead to a few concussions including one in an intraclub match.

Completely random...

I was playing a game of blackout tonight (online PS4 game) and I was put into a random lobby with Jay Lockhart on my team.

Really nice guy, super excited for the year ahead and was vocal about how pumped he was about Maxy being captain.

Was poor again. Consistently rucking from behind at throw ins. Why? I guess the one time he played in front he let his opponent grab it out of the ruck and kick a goal which was nice.

Problem is we have no choice. Look at May, numerous times giving up contested marks in conditions that couldn't be better for a backman.

It was noticeable that there were a few of the agraders who weren’t even looking at Max when he was trying to rev them up at three quarter time, especially Oliver. Doesn’t seem to have any connection with his mid fielders. Notice how manY times the hit outs go straight to the opposition. Either he is not positioning them or they are just plain dumb. Tossup really.

And here lies the real issue. We have no leadership. Not since Junior have we had a really good captain.

And look how that captaincy ended.

Our last great leader was retired by the club before his time.

Leadership issues are endemic on and off the field for us.

That kick to Kossie in the last quarter was unforgivable. Max has zero game sense.

Admittedly he’d just taken a good defensive mark, but had blokes free laterally and also had Steven May screaming at him to let him know. So he kicks long to a contest with the smallest bloke on the park

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the
