Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

I'm sorry to be a buzz kill but Tomlinson is very average. he is a very poor decision maker and also not quick.  not at all sure what the dees recruiting team saw in him. unless he us going to be used as a key forward then I think this is a poor move.

I mean, why the hell aren't we throwing everything at Papley? he is literally everything we need. defensive intent and pressure, speed and goal kicking nous. crazy

Because he's contracted to the Swans.

So unless you'd like to use pick 3 or a future 1st on Papley and a huge contract then I would look at the draft for some small quick talent

This is the reason we want him and why he is an immediate lock. We seriously lack endurance runners. It is why the much maligned anb got a new contract. Modern footy is all about defensive gut running. Listen to Oliver's speech from the bluey for evidence of that.

Make it happen. He’d be a huge asset. Forward or back.

Just returned from Russia and China ... what good news to come home to ... he'd be a real asset the the Dees some of the '...just what is needed...' outside and forward line assets. Can see him teaming up well by foot, too; might herald the end of the era for long bombs.

So  my take on this is that we have delisted a few peripheral players and are bringing in a best 22-24 player at a Grand final playing club at very low cost.  That is surely a trade up on the likes of Maynard et al.

I must admit to never watching GW$ much - some very mixed reactions on this site.  ( I watched him with interest at the GF and didn't gain a lot ... but then he was far from Robinson Crusoe that day).

Question, addressed please only to those who are positive about Adam:  where do you see him fitting into our jigsaw puzzle?

What position?  What assets?

So basically what we have here is another TMac with better disposal. He runs all day, can take a good mark and hits his targets. Not super fast, but not slow either. If he just roams the wing all day he'll give us pretty good value.

he is defender tmac not forward tmac. And for those with short memories he was horrendous in the d50

Tomlinson is 194cms.  96 kgs. From seeing him live v Pies and from highlights, his a key position type player.   Not quick.  Good skills.  Good contested mark.  Good kick for goal.  That’s the CHF or CHB type. He can be a versatile pickup who can play backup ruck.  Good get.

But not as a wingman.  Langdon helps us with outside run and carry.

Tomlinson has elite endurance which is an entry level  requirement for a winger today. They have to be able to run from back pocket to forward pocket all game long. They need to be able to help out defenders when they're out of position, be a forward option when required, be a target out of defence and to provide width so we can release into space from centre corridor. Tomlinson is good overhead, should have an advantage in the air over most opponents. He may not be super speedy but will be a better wing option than out of position inside mids like Jones, Tyson, Lewis and Brayshaw. And we've given up no draft assets to get him.. And we'll have speedy wing options with Langdon and Baker to mix and match with.

I think Tomlinson might surprise us.

Elite mark, and god knows we need that.

Good tank and a big boy.

He will want to prove himself at his new club too.

Richmond got end of 2nd comp pick (#39) for Ellis and he is reportedly on $600k pa for 5 years.  So Tomlinson would have to be in the same range to get the same comp pick #40

You're assuming consistency in AFL decision making and that's fraught with danger

The age reporting that we got him on a 5 year deal worth 500k a year. Not sure if it's correct as surely that would be more than an end of second round compensation. But if it's true it's a lot to pay for a role player.

It’s not really. $500,000 in 5 years time will be a below average pay probably.

Also the length of contract is not relevant (other than perhaps for figuring how much it is per season in relation to the salary cap).

Here is an old article in relation to it.

He can take a grab. I think his numbers for marking are elite. So if he is on the wing we have a very interesting set up with Max and he taking down the line marks. That should help us enormously. I like the comparison above - like TMac but with better disposal.

Exactly, Maxy can drift forward more often and Thommo can cover the kick down the line.

You keep saying this, except he plays on a wing. That's his best position.

Here is his possession heat map for 2019. The one showing the hotspots on the wings, a bit in the centre,  the defensive flanks and dropping back to full back (but never going near CHB),  and occasionally drifting forward on the flanks? That's Tomlinson.

Canplay, give it a break. The kid can play (your name?) and we have got him for next to nothing. He has played in more finals than most , if not all of our list in total and will be a bonus for us. Anyone that big and plays an outside role linking backs to forwards will help us heaps. Welcome to the Dees  Adam. You will be a big asset to us getting back into finals.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

    TRAINING: Monday 29th April 2024

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
