Anyone who is seriously saying he didn't fit into the system, isn't that good, doesn't pressure bla bla is kidding themselves and trying to delude themselves because he's gone.

The bloke is an absolute gun.

He will be an absolute gun for the next 10 years and probably would've gone down as one of the best forwards to ever play for the club.

He is a massive loss whatever way you try and spin it.

I think this is it. A committed Jesse would have been dynamite -- he's a hell of a player -- but he always gave off the vibe he was most content being a big fish in a small pond.

At Freo they will indulge him and he'll earn himself a comfortable living, and good luck to him. Will get a WA derby each year to give him a taste of the big time.

Over here, Goodwin is making a team that takes no prisoners. Anyone even half resembling a passenger will find it hard to look his teammates in the eye.

A whisper that it was player led...

and my point being far less about Jesse, and far more about the incumbents.

Bloody awful. Way worse than the Scully one, as he was never an amazing player to begin with.

Laughable to see demons supporters desperately trying to claim he was never that crash hot or didn't play Goodwin's system well or that Weed was just as good or that we looked better without him... None of us own crystal balls, but when he ends up a superstar of the comp, don't act shocked.

We need to get better at free agency. I don't know that we will though. We're already in a solid place list wise, and very soon will be right at the top of our cap.

What would you have done ?

We wanted May, it made our trade position weaker. We accepted unders for him to secure a deal with GC.

I’m sad for a number of reasons. We supported Jesse through a lot of difficult things, being away from family at a young age, a terrible back injury in his first year (available), the passing of his father, the testicular cancer scare, and all through that we helped him develop into easily the best young KP forward coming up.

What we’ve received for him in under what he’s valued, that’s my opinion but it’s not just what he’s doing now that matters it’s what he’ll be able to do. We invested a lot into him and it’s felt like following the very original trade to get him to the club we have downgraded.

That all said, it’s done and we can move on. He clearly always wanted to go home, so the club has moved to address a need at the other end of the ground.

If May turns out to be the defender everyone thinks he’ll be, and Weiderman is able to continue his development then the premiership is a big chance.

I feel like Jesse (as much as I loved having him on the team) was the last of our wantaway players on the list.  It seems like they all want to be there pulling in the same direction.  Go Dees! End of an era and beginning of a new one

I really rate Hogan and I am not as bullish about our ability to win without him as others are - it's a bit of a ruse as we've improved as a team and should be able to win without him.  But win big?  That's a different story.

On the surface of it,  it feels like unders but reading between the lines,  there's seems to be a bit more to this trade than we can readily see.  If Hogan dominates for Freo as I reckon he may well do,  the loss will be even more transparent.

May will improve the team but I'm still big on good key forwards in September so we will need Weideman to perform if we're to challenge.  And T-Mac will need to continue performing.

The irony is that we'll probably now need to recruit a key forward.  The FD won't be satisfied with just the 2 realistic KPF options.  An injury to the prospect or the revelation leaves us short up forward.

Guess thats why we resigned Garlett now come to think of it...

Hogan is a gun. I never thought he was a forward though. Always thought he'd make a better CHB or FB. But, he doesn't strike me as the type of kid who wants to play down back. I reckon that may have been part the reason why we were keen to move him on. Either way, 6 & 23 is unders. But Jason Taylor works with whatever these muppets leave him. He will make 23 work. He is that good.

Yes I agree with that. If melbourne are a chance to be a premiership contender say for next year and he is a contracted player for 1 more year then why go to a shizen side without much hope of playing finals. I really don't think he gives a stuff about success. Had a tough year last year but was still here this year. Strange cat indeed.

I am sus that some players didn't quite appreciate him as well. I remember the Jones and Lever talks of him leaving. Something was not quite right.

Was it Bennett Schwartz and neitz lining up in a final in early 90s v Geelong where we got thrashed. The three amigos shook hands at the start of the game but when it came to game time we didn't function well with an overloaded forward line. Jesse's only option was to pplay his final year as a CHB.

I don't remember Bennett, Schwarz and Neitz ever playing a final together, let alone against Geelong.

For those who believe Mahoney caves too easy and should take a harder stance, consider Adrian Dodoro at Essendon, who has not for the first time just failed to deliver a trade for a big name player who wanted to go there.

Edit: I’m dumb, trade period not closed yet. Hopefully this turns out to still be true in a few hours ?

I'm sorry to see Jesse go, he's going to be a star...

...But we're building a legacy here - so we can't afford to take passengers (in a physical or mental sense). Jessie wanted to go home, and that's where he's going.

Us? We've got ourselves some guys who are seriously talented (+ fill some gaps in our 22), and they're also coming home.

And now we're going to win some flags.

Be excited, we're about to see one hell of an era.

Pity to see him go

he was an absolute gem.  And will be at Freo. But sometimes here he played as if his heart was not totally in the game.

good luck Jesse

probably a great move for player and club

I reckon Bennett left in 93, which is the same year Neitz arrived, so they may have played the odd game together. Bennett would probably have played with Schwarz.

Regarding finals against Geelong. I don't remember a final against the Cats between 1989 and 2005.

All fair enough, but selling a player is not like selling a lounge suite on gumtree. It's not an open market. There are limited buyers, and the way the industry works, often the buyer knows your weak points before talks even start. Jesse spilled the beans to Freo that he wasn't going to sign with us. We didn't have much leverage.

We got what we could and move on.

For those who say, we should have waited a year and hoped for a bidding war between FFC and WCE. (And got May for cheap.) Try telling the competitive beasts on our list that we're sitting on our hands for a year and then hope the stars align.

The time to move is now, we did, and we got something significant back. There's only one direction, and that's forward.

GO DEMONS!

A bit of an insurance move as Jeff is still quite capable when he finds form Wadda ... the position he plays means the club needs at least 3 of those types unless the we had a Jeff Farmer/Ricky Jackson type.

Let's face it,  we wouldn't have gotten May unless we traded Hogan so I'm already starting to come to terms with the move.  I'd still play Frost as a utility in the backline because we need his pace and dash out of defence.  He is underrated.

                                               Jetta    Oscar    Hibberd

                                            Frost    May    Lever    Salem

As Roos often says,  defence wins Championships and he is right.

If Weideman really blossoms,  we'll be fine.

Unfortunately I was one of those who said Mahoney caved, i realised i was wrong when i calmed down after throwing a hissy fit. Any chance of bringing in a function that enables you to delete a post Nasher ? :)

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was
