The Roos will have Jy Simpkin as the only player to come in to their forward-line.

Explain to me why we need Frost given we could have the same 6 defenders playing against the 5 of the same 6 forwards from JLT 1?

We don't need Frost. I'm not sure what else needs to be said.

uhh.. it was a trial game?

Any reason to drop Bernie who well and truly did his job on one of the games most underrated stars and replace him with Brayshaw who's getting a lot of credit for his draft status and not his football?

Bugg is severely limited that's for sure, although pot luck tells me he kicks at least 1 of the 3 or 4 shots he missed most days. But I think he has to stay as others play better alongside him. His voice is strong and he gets the other forwards defending as a unit. Garlett massively stepped up the efficiency of his pressure with Bugg next to him and Hogan chased down a speedy kid. I think we'll find enough goals even with Buggy butchering a few easy chances but we can't afford to not have our forward pressure game working with the state of our midfield and backline's defensive issues.

Btw, I assume you won't be calling for Garlett to be dropped this week ?

Not that I am suggesting that either are in the mix this week, but where are Balic and JKH at? I thought Balic might turn the corner at Melbourne.  Barely heard him mentioned over preseason

I’m happy to put my hand up if wrong but I’ll be shocked if Balic is any better than Michie, Kennedy or Ben Newton.

We're two weeks into the season.

If he's going to "turn the corner", it doesn't necessarily have to have happened by now.

Random opinions with the odd fact:

I had the misfortune to see a little of the norf-saints joke of a game and only saw Waite in the backline.

I think there's logic in bringing Frost in to free up Lever but not if Waite sits in their backline.

While Bugg brings a lot of pressure to the forward line, he brings nothing else and I couldn't stand to see him kick more points when a lot of hard work has given him an easy shot at goal.

We also beat North in last years JLT which stood for exactly naught so I wouldn't be trotting out the same formula.

I agree with others that if Vince isn't tagging, I cant see him and Lewis (ordinary) in the backline and don't want to either. So either Vince gets Higgins or Ziebell (not in great form) or one of them gets a week off for being an old man - cant see it.

Hannan tore it up at Casey.

I want Salem to be given time to grow into his role way to much skill and execution.

Out - Hunt (inj) Bugg

In - Brayshaw or Frost (depending on height requirements) and Hannan

PS - not remotely excited by ANB's form in terms of decision making and execution. Would be happy to have him as another out for say Brayshaw.

Why?  Waite had a licence to Rome; and used it.

He wandered deep back in his roaming, on occaisions.

I want OMc on BBrown ,with Lever to chopout defenders when needed. Starting Lever off the Wing.

So Frost in, is only 2 tall defenders (OMc & Frost) with 4 running backs.

Lever as a tall Winger starting back corner of the sqare. and a licence to Rome.

If Waite ventures into our forwad  half, I'll be pleased to have Frost down their with him, looking for the footy.  Let Waite take him to the ball, or just have Frost there using his pace.

I'm sure we could hit him up.

No because he played his first good game in about his last 10 and looked mentally switched on and up for the contest. Got to the front of packs and tackled. Still made some odd decisions with the ball and skipped over a couple of ground balls but a big step in the right direction against the worst defensive team of 2017. Hearing Jones talk about Jeffy it sounded to me like they really put it on him to lift against the Lions.

One change. Frost in for Bugg.

Frost to play on Waite and OMac on Brown.

Petracca to spend more time forward.

Lewis to play midfield/wing not loose man.

Lever to play as a third defender or loose if we play a seven man defence. Even play him on the wing if they drag him to full back.

I like Frost but I'm not prepared to say he should be in just to cover golliwog head.

Rather, if we're the side we are supposed to be we should dominate North and simply starve Brown of opportunities.

If we cannot beat North comfortably our aspirations are ridiculous and we're [censored] for another season.

Lot in this BBO but the reality is that Norf have continually scored against us on the rebound. Nothing wrong with picking a specialist player to give a better opposition match up. Frost in (no other choice) and either Wagner or dare I say Hunt out.

Hunt just has not been the same player since that big hit last year (against Adelaide IIRC) and his game is being negated by other teams relatively easily. Might benefit from a few weeks without the AFL level pressure.

Haven't read the whole thread but I see people clamouring for Frost. Is this a case of absence makes the heart grow fonder? Not saying he can't/won't improve but on what I've seen in his career to date he is nothing special, OK 1:1 has speed but also a tendency to run into trouble, no lateral movement/peripheral vision and poor disposal. He is like Hunt but taller so if he comes in for Hunt I guess that would be a like for like but give us more flexibility in matchups but no way he should come in at the expense of someone who would reduce our midfield rotations.

Agree Dr G.. Frost has done little to earn a recall.

If we had Tom Mc in the side the debate would clearly be about swinging Tom down back for the fist half or the like.

I also have a  suspicion that Frost like Garland and Dunn before him may not be favoured by Goodwin and his game plan.

On the other hand including Frost may have the necessary placebo affect on this skittish team we have come to know. In reality this weekend should be a regulation win.

He might be, but he has to be better than the guys he is fighting against for a spot in the 22 .

First good game in 10 ?  We were heading into round 2.

On the sample size of one game you wanted our best small forward, who is a regular 40 goal a year forward, dropped.  He has elite pace and we're light on for pressure forwards.  It didn't make sense to drop him off the back of one game.

I can’t believe some people are suggesting Melksham be dropped. Like, what? On another day he’d have kicked three goals and was in the top 6 for contested possessions behind Jones, Oliver, Trac, Hogan and Garlett. If you include the end of last season in his form line he’s been of our best players.

Amother pearler is Weideman coming in for Pedersen off the back of two goals in what was essentially a training drill against Frankston.

I would be considering O Mac on Brown, our ‘premier’ defender who’s had an outstanding start to the season.

he held Brown to 2 in the JLT which could give him confidence.

I’m not averse to Frost coming back in, just not on Brown. Perhaps Waite!?

Frost on Waite, OMac on Brown. Sensible. Lever to HBFlank and utility role.

Bugg out, with Harmes and Salem, too. In with Brayshaw and Hannan, perhaps Kent on the bench.

Lewis out. Maybe bench new Oskar for a wing role. Bernie IN for Lewis loss. Bernie still has it when needed.

Pedo CHFwd, Hogan FFwd, alongside Garlett and Fritsch.

Cracker up the R's for those who do not add defensive pressure on opponents, those who do not run and chase, and those who bomb long into the forward line. Big warning for fwds who do not find space, read the incoming play or miss within 40 m of goal.

Salem won’t be dropped. I was surprised at the lack of ball he had, but he was 2nd leading pressure acts in the game. He blocks rather than taking the ball. He’s fine.

I wonder whether Salem was being asked to play as an inside mid. He seemed to have that role which robs us of one of his strengths (disposal execution) but perhaps is intended as part of his education to improve his overall game. I thought he didn't do enough, but what he did was executed very well.

Goodwin (and Roos before him) usually seems to want to give players two games, rather than one, to prove themselves so although Bugg did not seem to offer much, I expect him to be given another game.

I expect Frost to be picked, not just to "free Lever up" but because North's best forwards are Waite and Brown. A third tall defender is necessary to provide backup and Wagner and Hibberd who it can be argued "play tall" can't play tall enough.

For Frost to come in, one of the smaller defenders has to be demoted or move up the ground. If it's a demotion, that would be Wagner; alternatively, Vince could move up the ground to replace a less effective onballer, such as Harmes who has only played in flashes and not really delivered much. I also can't understand why Brayshaw isn't in the side - perhaps he comes in for Harmes.

So, assuming no forced changes:

In: Frost, Brayshaw  Out: Wagner, Harmes , both of whom could consider themselves unlucky.

Balic has played 4 games at bottom side Fremantle. He's hardly the 'great white hope'.

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k
