So on the one hand Goodwin is a some sort of autocrat who is "making it plain to the rest of the list" what won't be tolerated, and on the other hand it's "so many managers" who are complicating the process with codes of conduct and corporate blueprints?

How do we know it's not the "rest of the list" that has decided Watts doesn't put in enough and will not help them get to a flag?

Leading Teams and the ethos it tries to deliver is all about players taking control, not being treated like schoolboys.

Do you know it is the rest of the list that wants to move him on then? Dom Tyson doesn't from what we heard on SEN. We know management wants to move him on,  Goodwin for sure and N Jones mouthing the same.

Not sure what your point is. I think you have mis interpreted my thoughts. I was making the point in modern footy and modern corporations there are more managers than you can poke a stick at yet more than ever we do not tolerate difference from the agreed norm. Talented people who are different are not performance managed, they are more likely to be sent packing, instead of managed to realise their full potential.

Interesting that 2 years ago Dusty Martin was shopping himself around the AFL because Richmond and he had fallen out. There were few takers at the time so Richmond had to find a way to manage him! Gee look at the outcome.

Probably mentioned before....

Just reading Sydney are interested in him. Whilst I'd prefer he stay should he go to Sydney I hope Tippet isn't part of the deal.

He won't be going to Sydney

Wallet on SEN:

Watts out to his choice of club.

Lever down back

TMac to take Watts position up forward along with Weeds and Hogan next year

TMac would be a disaster as a high HF.  His disposal isn't up to the job.  It would make our biggest weakness even worse.

I would be disappointed in Watts if he even entertains leaving. He should just ignore the trade speculation and hit the track. He is contracted till the end of 2019 - so if he wants to stay he should. My advice to him would be to get out and hit the track, utilize the strength and conditioning staff available to you, and put in a big 2018 at MFC.

I wrote to the Club re Jack and received this response

"Thank you for taking the time to contact the Melbourne Football Club.

As you can imagine, list management is one of the most critical and important aspects of all AFL Clubs and in such a competitive industry, decisions must be made with the Club's success as the main focus.

At the end of the season, both Jack and the Club met to have a mature discussion about the future. Both parties agreed that after 9 years at the Club, the timing was right for Jack to explore potential opportunities for 2018.

This does not mean Jack is leaving the Club. He is a contracted player and if we believe that after looking at all the options, the best thing is for Jack to remain at the footy club, then that will happen. Similarly, if a deal presents itself that satisfies both the Club and Jack, then we will explore that as an option during the trade period.

The Club's number one priority is to improve our playing list and that will be the driving force behind any decision made in this area.

As soon as any decision during the upcoming trade period is finalised, we will ensure that this is communicated to our supporters and members.

Thank you again for your support and we look forward to having you on board in 2018!"

Kind regards,

Stephanie Breheny MFC

Great response from the club. Obviously, it's a generic email that they have from the PR department, but on point.

Disagree. It's all about space and forwardline synergy IMO. Tom looked terrific against Adelaide playing high HF and rotating back to the square. I think he could play it and run his opponent off their feet.

I never thought I would say I'm excited about Tom McDonald, but I am excited about Tom McDonald the forward and what he can bring to our forwardline in partnership with Hogan. For me, his move forward is somewhat of a masterstroke and was one of many moves Goodwin and co made this year, when faced with adversity, that came up trumps and made us better.

Tom and Jesse are both really good below their knees and I'd back both to be able to rotate high HF, CHF and deep.

Give Tom space and I'd back him to win most one-on-ones. Really like the versatility that Goodwin has demanded from his players.

And that brings me to Jack. He's certainly added (positional) strings to his game, but has failed to add (intensity and physicality) strings to his game and this was always ultimately going to bring his exit at the MFC.

Listening to Healy OTC tonight speak about Watts leaving. Implied that it's not a given and that he still might decide to stick around.

Wonder what discussions if any he's had with Jones considering they're buddies..

At the expense of culture, loyalty and a soul. It's not always about throwing things away when they don't quite work, sometimes you have to dig in and make the sum of what you have got work.

At the expense of culture,

I think you'll find that it's exactly because of Jack's "culture" (or lack of it) that we're where we are on this.

Jack may have loyalty, but i wouldn't qualify him as a player that comes under the culture we are trying to forge, and he is definitely not the soul of the MFC.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
