Expect a fired up Hawthorn this week. They got a rocket from the new CEO last weekend. Apparently she dropped into the players meeting after the Saints game and said  " We need to pull our socks up ". That type of comment always got us going when I was in the under 11's.

It's all about the start.

If we get the jump on them early and can carry it through to halftime, the evidence says they won't be coming back. Clarkson reportedly gave them the hairdryer treatment at halftime against the Saints and they responded with an even more insipid performance.

For all their experience, they are currently a side that needs an early sniff to be in the game. If that happens, they are capable of doing what they did to West Coast.

I expect the Hawks to come out 'all guns blazing', and we'll need to match them from the get-go.  If we can do that, then I think we'll wear them down around the contest, and win comfortably in the end.  However, anything less than a four quarter effort on our part, could see us in trouble.  I don't want to be playing 'catch-up' football at any stage.

I think we will tell in the first fifteen minutes as long as we don't squander opportunities.

Get a decent lead and build on it

Would like to see this again on the weekend

Still my favourite piece of play. One handed against a 3 time premiership player. Impressive

Unfortunately the umpires will have been instructed to call all Oliver's slick handballs as throws - need to keep their quota up it appears.

This is interesting for future reference in team selection conversation:

From the AFL site

"Coach Chris Scott said midfielder Sam Menegola, defender Tom Stewart and ruckman Zac Smith were all chances to come into the team after being left out of the 22 on Thursday night.
“Sam’s still a good chance to play for us … unfortunately the rules dictate that we don’t have any flexibility with the way we pick the side on a Thursday night,”
If we've already named them managed they can’t play.
“So don’t read too much into the fact that players are named omitted."

So this may explain why players like Stretch have been listed as omitted in reason weeks.

This may be public knowledge, but I'd never heard that before and thought it was an interesting thing to note when seeing players getting 'omitted' and then not playing in the VFL.

Tbh... Be happy at end of 1st qtr if scores low but hawks haven't jumped us. After that we're a fair chance .

I expect Rioli to kick 5,Jar Head 4, Breust 4 ,Hawthorn will have 500 disposals. The Dees to win by 28pts

Funny how long 12 months is in football.

12 months ago, commentators were lauding the precise kicking and 'stacks of left footers' of the hawks.  Recruiting threads were full of who we should recruit to be more like the hawks.  The Dees were showing increased competitiveness (3-3), and had stemmed the flow of big scores from previous years.  Roos was making a difference to our defensive systems.

12 months on and the tables have turned.  People are lauding the highly competitive, 'fearless' football, and the crop of emerging talent in the dees.  They are also suggesting that the Hawks are old, slow and the competition has passed them by.

Round 7 this year brings some interesting questions:

  • Is there any fight in the old dog left?
  • Did they trade out the heart of the team a year too early?
  • Do they really need catastrophic change to get themselves back on track?
  • Are the Demon young guns ready to bring 4 quarters of intense, fearless football?

My sense is that the Hawks are going to come out and test us.  We need to counter their 'precision' with super competitive football.  We will win by forcing the Hawks to make contests and to brutalize them when the contest happens.  We need to run past them, through them and from them.  We need to be accurate in front of goal and minimize the stupid turnover.  Importantly, we need to block the corridor and force them wide, and bust open the corridor running the other way.

McEvoy and Peterson should be interesting, and this may be the only position on the ground where they have us (on paper) bested.  Cyril is a pest and the umpires love him, so it is really important we keep him quiet.  With their lack of leg speed they are going to have to pass the ball.  If our zones stand up (dont get sucked too high up the ground) and we can slow their movement, it should be a great day out for the Demons.

I am not a huge fan but ANB was a bit stiff to be dropped after one bad game.

Probably his turn for a rest, like Stretch the week before.

IN Wagner Hogan

OUT ANB Melksham

Changes make sense.

Wagner for Melksham.

Hogan for ANB.

Vince mid-fwd.

Same ruck Pedersen/Watts/TMac and defensive set up as last week.

And JKH is still there

Don't know which bit of Goody and Macca rate him, posters don't get

Unless there is someone banging down the door at Casey and JKH plays his role, he will be in the team

He wont be in the team next week if he doesn't have a good game.  And I mean good, not like the last two weeks where hes done nothing.

Kent and ANB are ready to come in for him.

Don't over sell it, we're persevering with him to give him a decent run at getting it right.  It's true they rate him but he needs to do more.

Yep, and as Petracattack said, its ANBs turn for a spell. He has been named as an emergency so its not as though he has been dropped for form, it is simply someone had to go for Hogan. The spell won`t hurt him.

Stretch is also an emergency, you`d expect he would have to play at Casey as I believe he didnt play at all last week would that be right?

Hawks fans wont be happy that Clarko dropped Brand. He has been better than both Gibson and Frawley this season and is their future.

You're just asking for it as usual, posters are allowed to have different opinions to you.

Good team and good depth to make sure those that play know they have others ready to step up.

it is a concern that Brayshaw has not been named in the Casey side for this weekend. I hope that the club is just being super conservative and looking after the kid's long term future.

Chalk one up for groupthink.
