Every now and then, instruct Gawny to thump it out of the centre bounce straight toward goal.  Get CHF out of the way and get all of the inside mids to run at it like rugby forwards.  Sometimes there's something to be said for just getting the ball going your way.  If the opposition picks it up we should have plenty of tacklers.  Get the outside or goal kicking type mids and half backs (Brayshaw/Hunt/Melksham types) to run wide to receive the handball and take shot at goal.  Think Clark Keating and the Brisbane midfield.  The game's probably past the use of this tactic regularly, but I doubt it should be forever forgotten.

Use Gawn and the mids to win clearances and coach aggressive hand balling and stoppage set ups.

Beef up our forward pressure, even if it means dropping players who kick goals but don't contribute enough defensively - Garlett even Watts and Hogan if necessary 

Zone defend to cause turnovers in dangerous spots on the back of this forward pressure

Counter attack whenever possible from half back but if it's not on then either kick down the line to Gawn or Hogan or patiently wait until a player/combination of players can make a play from half back. I'd work on particular half back plays - the Watts, Lewis or Salem corridor kick. Hunt or Frost playing on and using speed. The short kick and handball to a player running forward coming across the mark.

As a player moves to the ball and the contest the closest player covers his man/ position causing the player closest to him to cover him etc in a circular fashion in attack the movement is to space

I like the way or game has been progressing in the last couple of seasons but I would like to see us running as a group with the ball more often. Supporting the player with the ball with multiple options so we can run the ball through the center and give the forwards a chance to structure their leads.

Even in defence, Hunt as a pack. Hit the ball carrier and support the tackler by covering any potential receivers.

I'll refine the MCC advice a touch. How about " run to space and provide options, talk, shepherd to protect the ball carrier and,the old chestnut, kick it long ( to number 4 ).

Middle section of the ground - Jones, Oliver, Viney and Tyson around the ball. Gawn to use any of those players to win the clearance. Spread quickly. Deliver the ball immediately to Lewis or Stretch on a wing. Those players then to deliver it precisely and quickly to a forward on the lead, or any number of high half forwards finding space in the forward 50. Simple. And, from the training reports I've read, it seems that's the style they're intending to play.

If it's a stoppage near the forward 50 - same set up but with one of Hunt, Salem, Hibberd or Vince sneakily lurking behind the stoppage. Win the clearance and quick disposal out the back to one of them, they then run to the forward 50 line and have a shot on goal. Vince and Hunt specialise in this, and Hibberd used to do this in his Essendon days. Salem would eat this play for breakfast.

Main thing is consistently winning the clearances though - and the good news is that seems to have been a huge focus this preseason.

I've always thought the best form of forward pressure is to kick goals...goes to show how out of touch I must be.

I used to despair when Roos and the coaches before him would drop a spare man in defence (sorry, I should use the correct lingo, "a plus one"). All it ever seemed to do was make it easier for the opposition's defence to get the ball and find ways to avoid our spare man. So, my wish is for the game plan not to include this infuriating tactic.

I have always been a believer in that no matter how good your game plan is  - work rate will pretty much trump all. 

Most games we lost last year were because we were not prepared to work hard enough. Run, spread, chase,  tackle, contest - then you can please yourself on the nuances.

Sounds simple but can be hard to do.

Noticed other teams (but not MFC) use a tactic last year that when player 1 from team A has a mark or free kick, another  player (2) from Team A will stand near the Team B player who is on the mark. Player 1 plays on and then player 2 steps into shepherd away the team B player. The idea is that Player 1 can then kick over the zone.

That tactic should be banned. If a player from the team which does not have the ball is banned from the protected zone, so should players from the team with the ball. And if the player on the mark isn't in the protected zone, he should be. In other words, the player on the mark should be protected as much as the player with the ball.
