Would Frost be a good match up on someone like Cloke?

Great closing speed and height with the ability to spoil and not get out wrestled.

Thoughts?

I agree.

Probably won't happen as they are playing a zone defense and i guess it is important in the long run to get that right and the best practice is match practice but as i suggested with Daniher i'd run Frost with Cloke and blanket him.

He's got the tank and height to go with him and speed to run off him so he's not just a pure lock down defender (which teams can't really afford to have anymore). TMac can take Cloke whn Frost has to give Gawn a chop out.

Cloke is a confidence player who if we can shut out early will struggle to get into the game.

I think his athleticism suits Moore, he is quick enough to match him for mobility and would be too strong. Daniher in round 2 shows that Tom struggles against the high leaping tall forwards i think he would be better looseish as a sweeper taking intercept marks/3rd man up spoils with dunn on cloke and frost on Moore. However... it is very clear that the club has no interest in playing Frost in defence so for now we will have to wait and see.

Not sure I've ever seen a second ruckman also playing as a key defender.

We lost to Collingwood on QB last year because Roos made the mistake of putting McDonald on Cloke and he kicked 4 in the first quarter.

Frost hasn't spent a second in defence at Melbourne, so now's not the time to try it.

Dunn really has two perfect match ups in today's game - Hawkins and Cloke.  Big lumps that Dunn has the body to wrestle with.  He should not leave Cloke's side all day.

Exactly right and Dunny flogged Hawkins at the Cattery last season

Anyone have thoughts on Hunt? im not sure he would get a game this week but i keep hearing good things but then he is never really considered. Plapp has said he played well in the player review.

Quote

Jayden Hunt: I felt Hunty was one of our better players. He’s put two or three really solid weeks together in the VFL now, so he should be knocking on the door in the next few weeks. He had 30 possessions, playing a high defensive role, plus he linked up really well. Hunty also gave us plenty of dash and speed from opposition turnovers. We were really happy with his game and he’s coming along really well, so we were pleased with him

Do you think he will get a run in the AFL any time soon?

Mcdonald was also the form defender of the AFL at the time and had absolutely smashed every forward he'd played on before this point, so i really think it was a no brainer, TMAC just had an off day and Cloke is a confidence player, once he got on a role noone was going to stop him.

Yeah this is spot on.. I feel like it was just bad luck of Tom having a shocker and Cloke the best game of his life on the same day. Although i would think Dunn is the better matchup this week but wouldnt be to conserned if it was Tom. Have to admit im a little worried about Cloke though, i hope he doesnt find form this week. He was playing pretty bad before us last year as well.

A reminder we rolled the bastards in Round 18 last year when they still had hopes of making the 8.  Vince ran rings around Pendlebury.

This is the most bizarre thing ever. I had completely forgotten about beating Collingwood last year. How the hell could I forget about beating that mob by 6 goals? Oivey. My memory. Is that one of the biggest winning margins we've had under Roos too? And old dope here still didn't remember it.

I don't agree lumba offers anything to the side. With ball in hand he's as erratic as a crack head in a drug bust

Last week I would've agreed, but I also said if the players are prepared for and go with his style than it works a lot better. Vs Essendon all the players were flat footed, 2nd quarter onwards they were ready, leading and helping.

He helped turn the game our way in the 2nd quarter with his run out the backline.

I would not expect many changes, ANB is unlucky but I don't think it's right to take Stretch out after one game. He can keep putting up his hand and his patience will be rewarded. This is what we've been wanting all these years, players from Casey putting pressure on senior players to perform.

This will be a real test for the Dees, can they get up after Saturdays nail biting loss.  The pies will throw everything at us, they have to win or else they will be in a huge amount of trouble with their supporters and coach.  I just hope the dees come to play and don't take this game lightly, like they did with Essendon.

Watts played the game of his life. It was funny because the cwood crowd kept booing him, thinking IT would put him off. Hope he does II again.

Seriously can't believe that anyone could watch more than 2 Melb games and not realise that Tom MacDonald is not a deep/last line defender and certainly not a bustling, bullocking defender designed to play on the likes of a Cloke or a Hawkins.

FCS, please play him at CHB or even further up the ground where he can use his athletic skills and not have his weaknesses exposed by being FB.

Surely Roos won't make another monumental error again by playing him deep on Cloke.

We don't have a lot of options...the best we have is to put pressure on their mids and not let Cloke get good supply which is what happened early last time.

Dunn might have had one good game on Hawkins but he has been spanked by good forwards in the past...I remember seeing Tex give him a hiding a few years back.

I don't think Frost has the footy nous to play on Cloke.

Whoever it is midfield & forward pressure is the key.

So if Darcy Moore plays as the deep full forward and Cloke leads up the ground for most of the day as a CHF then what do you do?

I totally agree McDonald is suited to CHB and Dunn is a better fit as the deep defender but it might not be that simple.

Watched the replay twice now, Bugg and VDB keep their spots. Wagner is touch and go but my gut says stay, likewise Stretch who will be better for the run in the firsts.

IN Garlett (Brayshaw if unfit)

OUT Vince

VDB to the midfield to get his hands on the pill a bit more rotating with BenKen who will want to put on a show against the old mob. Wagner might be the perfect match up for Howe not having any relationship with him and has the legs to burn the lazy bugger off the other way

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
