Jesse Hogan and his kicking for goal (merged thread)

A 20 year old key forward with 39 goals is not delivering?  Sheesh.

His second half of the year has been underwhelming, there is no doubt about that.  Whether he is carrying a few niggles, or just totally down on confidence, we aren't seeing the Hogan of last year or of early 2016.

But, he's a kid.  They ALL have these periods and, as you say, we need to cut him some slack.  To suggest he isn't 'delivering' is disappointing and short sighted to say the least.

Wise I think you are missing my point and that is ~ is he a kid with flaws or is he a million dollar a year, game changing key forward? His agent thinks the latter and presumably so does Jesse. I think like you, he is a kid with potential but with a flawed kicking action and his form has been average in the second half of the season, to the point where he would be dropped if he didn't have this so called "once in a generation key forward" tag given to him by some in the media. He hasn't kicked a goal for how many weeks now?

If it were up to me I would drop him this week and bring in the Weed because Jesse (and his agent) need a reality check and the Weed on his debut effort looked bloody good and played purely for the team.

I would be more than happy if Jesse signed up tomorrow for a fair price but I am tired of his delaying tactics. If he demands a million plus a year I would be shopping him around for the best deal we can get.

McKenna was on SEN a few weeks ago talking about this very thing.

Said it drives him mad watching most goal kickers these days. They spin the ball in their hands as they walk in. They move it from side to side. Their run up is at crooked angles.

Walk/run in in a straight line at at the target, drop the ball vertically down to your foot, keep your hand on it as long as you can, leg goes straight back and straight through. Goal.

I think this is the problem a few posters have. He's having a bad run, happens too the best of players, especially early in their careers.

The kid still has over a year to go on his current contract. He doesn't have to do anything.

He's both a righty and a lefty.

Writes with left, bounces footy with left hand, kicks right but the holding action looks like he should kick with left.

And the stutter and angle approach makes him look all the more confusing.

Definitely needs adjustment to simplify over summer. It will affect accuracy and distance over his career.

Can't he afford the $50/$100 tables?

Lol, ye that's what I was thinking, surely he can afford a bit more. He must have gone all in within like 3 hands, because when I turned around to have a look like 6 mins later his seat was empty.

Probs a good thing, with the demons history of gambling issues ( the Ox and Daniel Ward and good old Neitzy scuffling with bouncers outside Crown, etc)

So now that Oscar has proven him wrong, we can only assume that picket has tried to move on to something else to take the focus off that thread?

Nice try.

Edit - and, just for the record, Hogan will sort himself out.  He's 20.  Josh Kennedy had the same problems and he's going fine now.  We get ourselves worked up over nothing.

U are a goose. Oscar is now a "Superstar" after two games now is he?? I have NOT been proven wrong yet!

And I did not try for any leverage to get changed focus. And Yes I DO beleive Hogan has a major problem with his set shot routine!

So do many others. Lightweight!

So you're saying that his field kicking and shots at goal inside 40m are bad? And I'm talking about on average, not after one bad game. I'm fairly certain I could look up a bad game from Dunstal and Locket and state they were crap kicks too in that case.

His set shot routine engenders NO Confidence!

If he had already re-signed not one single person would be getting negative on him. People are trying to calm themselves down by getting on his poor form as a way of rationalising to themselves that the world wont end if he leaves

Its cos he has a wobbly gait and i would doubt he could fix it by now.  The other thing is that he is a gorilla forward and so - like Reiwoldt hawkins and cloke can be taken out of the equation by playing off him and double teaming .  Melbourne very definitely shoyldnt be offering him once in a generation pay packet because we will need the coin to keep our many emerging stars .

His aporoach does not worry me any where near as much as his holding of tge ball and ball drop. He was holding it like a torp on sat night.

Yes - couldn't believe how awkward/misaligned the pill looked in his hands. Our Rolls Royce with 4 bald tyers. Also has best seat in the house watching the best kick in the league.

Re the stuttering run up - did Kennedy always have it? Looks better now. How was his accuracy with the big stutter?

true, but i don't think having the continual fanfare over his contract and future is doing his well being any good. the sooner it is sorted out the better for everyone, especially jesse

His field kicking was very poor on Saturday night as well as the inordinate amount of time he takes to make a decision after a mark or free kick

He looks completely off the MFC game pace at the moment and he needs to start playing like the rest of the team

he displays no real sense of urgency and his body language is still poor

needs a rest!

I cant get access to the footage to confirm this but someone else might. Was I correct in noticing that his shorter set shot miss he didnt have his normal stutter? I could have sworn he didnt stutter in for that one.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
