Brisbane Lions Consider Asking for Priority Picks

Recommended Posts

Rockliff, rich, zorko, hanley, redden, martin, beams, Christensen, mayes, taylor, green, mcstay and probably pick 1.

They have mismanaged picks and trades, are poorly coached and are tanking imo, remember some people suggested finals at the start of the year.

players are leaving but thats an issue every other club faces. They will get a compo pick for lewy, and a good pick for aish

This highlights the dumbness of the "the MFC did to itself" argument many fans put forward for the MFC not getting a PP.

Cascading cockups is a prerequisite for a club landing itself at the bottom of the ladder for a lengthy stretch. No club that has struggled has done so through doing everything right.

Don't forget, Beams now "injured" and out for the season. Didn't look too distressed when I saw him sipping lattes on Friday afternoon in South Melbourne.

The excuse they need a PP because all their players are leaving? They're not leaving for nothing; they're getting picks in return and it's the duty of list management to make those picks count. If their recruitment team is too inept to get anyone worthwhile... oh, except those two gun players they secured last year... well, maybe they should have a look in the mirror? They already have a huge leg-up in the form of an Academy. Get the AFL to poor some more money into that so they can better develop their exclusive talent.

Their coach's poorly timed comments about needing to losing the next 6 games to get a PP send a really poor message to his players. You have to wonder if Lepp is out of his depth up there.

If they put in an official request, so should Carlton, Gold Coast and us. Makes it impossible for the AFL to favour Brisbane alone.

I think we should put in for another one anyway. We may actually have a better chance if we do that than when we really needed it! Even if we win 7 or 8, if you take the last 8 years into consideration they just CANT say yes to theirs and no to ours. Or perhaps they can but only because they've botched the whole frikn exercise up so badly. From its very inception.

They've given it over to popular opinion ( great way to run an organisation...NOT) opinion that can shame the club requesting or, in this case, be on the lions side. But for no quantifiable reason except sentiment. Suddenly all the arguments for not giving us one last year dont matter?? Caro Wilson did the club SO much harm back then ....not to mention Schwabb and Neeld. Hard to not feel perpetually angry about these things.

The way the press are backing Brisbane here makes me think the Dees really are not wanted in this competition. I myself struggle to see how we will continue to compete.

This is where the AFL effed up when it came to giving in to the pressure over our plight - they can't give a PP to another team ever.

Or if they ever do - good lord, that team would have had a horror stretch...

They have hamstrung themselves now and I don't care if they go 2 and 20 this year and next they are not going to get a PP.

They should be better than they are anyway. That midfield needs a coach who is half decent. Evidently, Voss and now Leppa are not that.

Get Bolton from the Hawks and they will win 8 games next year easily.

Trade their way into a decent forward, on top of a fully fit Rockliff, Hanley and Beams. They should comfortably win 8 games. You are right about the AFL digging their own hole over this issue, to give Brisbane a PP would seriously compromise the integrity of the AFL. They would be seen as playing favorites, and overall it would be hard to justify.

We all saw this coming when we were denied last year. Demonland was full of "well, they can't possibly give out any more PPs unless a player dies or something similar".

The AFL should have thrown us a bone, an end of 1st round pick perhaps, to at least keep the idea of long-term poor performance warranting a PP alive.

The only way out they have now is to essentially say Brisbane can have one because they are in a growth market. If we thought the [censored] of us possibly getting one last year was bad, can't wait to see the other teams' reaction to that reasoning. Eddie will flip his lid.

Edit: [censored] apparently not censored. Good to know.

We got into trouble by pursuing a real youth policy that left us with little on field leadership.

Then we compounded the error of sacking Jnr after his best ever year.

After the backlash ,we took on Byrnes ,Gillies and Rodan .

The genius of Roos is his ability to re-launch a career in the 25-30 year old range.

Garlett,H,Vince.

I think Brisbanes list is pretty good compared to Carlton ,but they are not playing for each other or listening to the coach.

To the credit of Schwab,Cuddles and Bailey ,we gave youth a chance to prove themselves .

Sometimes we picked the wrong ones but at least we didn't get old champs over to cover our lack of class.

No chance Lions will get a priority pick now!

Leigh Matthews has poured cold water on it! (from The Age).

He thinks the old system of 2 years of < 4 wins is better.

At least the drama is avoided for another year!

BTW, Leigh is a Lion's Board Member

Unfortunately, I can't post the link as my 'paste' icons aren't working but it is a really objective interview.

Nailed it, the AFL really stuffed up on that. That would've saved face for them for any future issues with clubs but instead they decided we weren't that bad. Well Brisbane only a couple of years ago was challenging for the finals, they've got a lot more ground to cover on us before they deserve a priority pick. And they still do have some real quality mids in there.

How about Brisbane and us divide up the Bombers players and dissolve that mob.

Upon reflection not much there after a couple of picks...

Will the AFL set up a full investigation into tanking at Brisbane - after all Connolly was merely an assistant coach who had a joke with his mates.

Of course, the AFL with their stated aims of upholding the integrity of the game must act on this one too......not.

You forgot the resurrection of Dunn and Jetta, now integral cogs in our back line.

Interesting re the censorship. [censored] is ok but a noun describing one who tosses something is not. Nor is the common nickname for Richard.

Quite obviously the censorship is being run by the umpires - blatant inconsistency at all levels, and a total absence of common sense.

Do you think there is someone sitting there deciding what goes and what doesn't?

It's an IT limitation od the software of the site - I am sure that there is a list of words they can put in and if those words are attached to anything else - they won't be picked up by the software and be censored.

[censored] in a teacup, really...

Words can be added or removed from the censor list at will, but it is a very manual task. Whoever wrote the list (which is just one we downloaded off the internet somewhere) obviously hadn't come across the word s-storm before and had problems with people using Richard in an abusive context. Lots of other 's' words are in there, but every possibility needs to be in there for it to work, as it doesn't partially match words (otherwise it would censor "parse", for example).

I know it's silly at times, but all you need to do is have an adult conversation with me about it instead of tantruming in the middle of threads and I'll do something about it.

I wasn't tantruming (if that comment was aimed at me). I did think it was amusing though, as was mono's umpire jab.

In the future, I'll try to be less of a Richard.

Unfortunately this commission is conflicted and can't seem to make decisions that are unpopular with their darling clubs.

The independent AFL was supposed to be that...independent. This one isn't because it doesn't want to be the bad guy or have Eddie not be nice to them.

The problem with that proposal is we don't know what chemical would be required to dissolve them with given that we don't know what they've already ingested.

It was more aimed at monoccular, though it was more out of general frustration as it's not the first time this has come up. Probably an overreaction though, so apologies to all for that.

I'll remove Dick (only with a capital 'D') from the censored list, and add that other word for you all.

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k
