Whole team suspension?

Two or more in a team.. Oh Gill, 3 days out from the season and its looking ugly already....

precisely OD. widespread abuse across the game over a long time. no clubs are immune.

True and we may yet be in the firing line. But after the recent years of pain we MFC supporters have endured, a little be of schadenfreude, however misplaced, is understandable. Let's hope we stay in the clear and aussie rules is not damaged.

Mick Rogers managed to convince the UCI he had it in meat from China.

Banned Australian cyclist Michael Rogers cleared to ride again

Keeffe and Thomas will surely use the similar defense from Mexican meat. Apparently the athlete strict liability says they will still be guilty but can get off without a punishment if they somehow prove they it like Rogers managed to.

Unfortunately I don't know how exactly they will prove innocence. Natural justice says they have to be given the benefit of the doubt but the drugs rules seem to go beyond that.

If they did do it I hope that ASADA can find a doctor/vet/drug importer/Dank etc to come forward with evidence and they can have a 4 year ban.

If they truly are innocent and just had some dodgy burritos in mexico then I hope they can find the steaks and cows to prove that as well.

By the way Thomas was mugged in LA in November. I think they were in Mexico but even if not it wouldn't be a surprise to eat Mexican meat in LA.

I've met Lachy Keeffe. He's a really nice guy. If he's a drug cheat then throw him out. 2 years, in fact WADA just increased the penalty to 4. But if he's just had some dodgy mexican meat then let the guy off because it could happen to anyone. He'll likely miss 6 months or so whilst they work through it all anyway.

I just hope more than anything we get a clear verdict.

Over on Bomberblitz there is a good deal of gloating going on. They can enjoy C'wood discomfiture for a while but it will rebound on them.

Till now it appears that if the Bomber's don't get a severe whack, no one will mind (bar a few posters here).

If C'wood is whacked Bomber's supports will face the wrath of C'wood supporters and their media allies if the Bomber's also don't get some sort of significant whack.

BTW, does anyone know how long this Mexican meat stays in the system?

I wonder if the whole team was tested or just these 2. If it does stay in the system, presumably ASADA will be wanting to test the whole team asap.

How can posters gloat over this?

This is terrible news.

That cheaters are now being caught as opposed to it being swept under the rug?

I'm all for it.

When Is the AFL going to come out and realise that they have a drug problem. Surely Gillon McLachlan has the balls to put his hand up and start putting a stop to this. Our game slowly but surely is going down the [censored] hole.

I wouldn't be surprised to find out performance enhancing drugs have been part of the AFL for the last 20 years.

It's the testing processes and technology improvements that are uncovering it a whole lot more in all sports that actually care to test.

Whatever.

You better not watch the Tour this year or NFL or MLB...

Sport is trying to catch people who are trying to gain an unfair advantage.

Players getting caught - even innocent ones - is the price you pay for proper management of this issue.

What do you suggest they do?

They have adopted the WADA/ASADA code, have worked together with clubs to make sure all supplements are pre registered and recorded and have implemented an out of season recreational drug policy that many sports simply wash their hands of.

When you have a crime problem the first thing that usually happens is you increase the police force and you get an increase in the crime statistics. If you live in Melbourne you would've noticed how that happened with gangland murders a decade or longer ago and CBD violence from about 2005-2010. First they became problems then they seemingly became more prevalent - why? Because the police and media were out to find them.

The same thing is now happening with drugs in the AFL.

It's not the AFL, they have rules in place......It's not Collingwood they too have rules

It's the bloody players and sometimes, like all young men and women, completely stuff up

It is their responsibility and their fault, not the afl or Coll.

I agree 100%. I think it's time the AFL just put the cleaners through a few, especially Essendon. They need to make a statement.

well one thing would be to increase the number of tests from a current average of <1 per player per year

hardly a serious amount of testing

I agree. It's very easy to feel a degree of vindictive satisfaction that another powerhouse of the league has been caught out with drug issues (and I do), but you need to remember that these are two promising young men who may have just seen their careers flushed down the toilet. It may be that they took the stuff deliberately to try to get an edge and if that's the case then they have nobody to blame but themselves, but there is also a chance that they just stuffed up somewhere along the line like Saad or Lees. I really hope that is not the case because history tells us that even if it is a more or less innocent mistake they will still be put out for at least a year. Sadly, I think it would be better for everyone except the boys themselves if they have been trying to cheat because it removes so much of the confusion in how to treat them. An outright drug cheat is much easier, they get banned, the club sacks them and everyone carries on.

I think we need to stop wallowing in other club's misery.

We are no great football team or club ATM and you never know what is around the corner.

And how quickly we, as supporters, are happy to forget our previous transgressions (tanking for one) and how angry it made us when other supporters would give us heaps for it.

There is nothing good about this situation no matter what team is involved.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
